Psychological horror gets into your head instead of jumping out of a cupboard. A corridor that's too quiet, a note that contradicts the last one, a character who stops trusting what they see. The Switch suits it well. You play handheld with headphones on and the lights off, and the small screen flatters the low-poly, first-PlayStation look that half of these games go for.
We've picked fourteen for Nintendo's console, from SIGNALIS and Crow Country to Outlast 2 and Clock Tower: Rewind, and checked what each one costs on Gocdkeys this morning. One thing shapes everything below: in 13 of the 14, the cheapest offer is a shared account from Difmark. The Bridge Curse 2 is the only game where a cartridge beats it, and Yomawari: Lost in the Dark is the only one with eShop codes on sale.

A shared account or a copy of your own
An Account is the login to someone else's Nintendo Account, one that already owns the game. You play on a profile you don't control, the game never reaches your own account, and if the seller changes the password it's gone. It's nearly always the cheapest option, so we list it, but for every game we also give the price of a copy that's actually yours when one exists.
On Switch that means one of two things. A cartridge from Amazon or Fnac, with no fees, which you can lend or sell on. Switch games aren't region-locked, so a cartridge from Amazon UK works on any console. Or an eShop code you redeem on your own Nintendo Account, and here region does matter: a North American code won't go into a European account.
We don't have Nintendo eShop prices, so they're not in this guide, though every game here is sold there. Review scores come from Steam and belong to the PC version. Historical figures are quoted without fees or coupons.

SIGNALIS, Crow Country, Yuppie Psycho and DREDGE: small studios, big reputations
SIGNALIS
Two people at rose-engine made SIGNALIS, and it wears its influences openly: the first Resident Evil and Silent Hill, a six-slot inventory, very little ammo, and a PlayStation look with an anime edge. You play Elster, a Replika who wakes up in a crashed ship and heads down into a mining facility looking for Ariane and the promise they made each other. The story arrives in fragments, through notes, dreams and jumps it never fully explains. On Steam, the PC version is Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% of 30,717 reviews.
There's no copy of your own on sale today. The only offer is Difmark's account at €12.59 with coupon Gocdkeys (€13.16 with fees). If you want it on your own Nintendo Account, you'll have to go through the eShop.
Crow Country
SFB Games, run by brothers Tom and Adam Vian, set Crow Country at the start of the nineties in a theme park that has closed down. Mara Forest turns up looking for its owner, Edward Crow, who vanished some time ago. You can swing the camera around chunky low-poly sets straight out of the PS1 era, and the park is packed with puzzles and hidden corners. It leans on mystery more than scares, which makes it a good first pick. It's the highest-rated game in this guide: Overwhelmingly Positive, 97% of 7,771 reviews.

Yuppie Psycho
From Baroque Decay, the Spanish studio behind The Count Lucanor. In Yuppie Psycho you're Brian Pasternack, a young man with no qualifications who somehow lands a job at Sintracorp, then finds out on his first day that he's been hired to hunt a witch hiding somewhere in the building. Pixel art, pitch-black humour and an office that gets nastier the higher you climb. Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 8,022 reviews.
Again, only an account: €10.07 with coupon Gocdkeys (€10.52 with fees) at Difmark.
DREDGE
The least frightening game here, and the one that creeps up on you. DREDGE, by New Zealand's Black Salt Games, has you fishing around an archipelago by day and selling the catch. At night the fog rolls in, your panic rises, and what you haul up stops looking like fish. Lovecraft on a slow boil. Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 47,703 reviews.
It's also the cheapest game in the guide. Difmark's account is €7.22 with coupon Gocdkeys (€7.54 with fees). Before the coupon it's €8.59, which matches the lowest we've recorded, on 14 April; the usual price is €18.99 (both figures without fees). A copy of your own means the Deluxe Edition cartridge: €29.99 at Amazon DE, €32.76 at Amazon FR and €39.99 at Amazon ES, all with no fees.
Outlast 2 and the games where all you can do is hide
Outlast 2
Red Barrels kept the rule from the first game: you can't fight back. In Outlast 2 you're Blake Langermann, a cameraman whose helicopter goes down in the Arizona desert, and you spend the game looking for your wife, Lynn, in the middle of a cult's territory. The camcorder's night vision eats batteries, and between chases the game keeps dropping you into memories of a Catholic school that don't quite fit. It's the most violent game on the list. Very Positive, 90% of 54,279 reviews, the most of any game here.

White Day: A Labyrinth Named School
Sonnori's remake of a Korean PC cult classic. In White Day: A Labyrinth Named School, Hee-min sneaks into his school at night to return So-young's diary and ends up locked in with janitors on patrol and ghosts from Korean school legends. You can hide and you can run, and that's about it. Very Positive, 81% of 3,822 reviews.

Clock Tower: Rewind
Human Entertainment's Clock Tower came out on the Super Famicom and never officially left Japan. WayForward's remaster finally brings it over. Jennifer, an orphan, arrives at the Barrows mansion and is soon being stalked by Scissorman, a deformed boy with a huge pair of shears. It's a point-and-click game with no combat, and hiding places don't always work. You get the original plus a Rewind mode with new animated scenes. Very Positive, 88% of 462 reviews.

MADiSON
Made by Bloodious Games, an Argentinian studio. MADiSON puts you in the shoes of Luca, a teenager who wakes up locked in his room and ends up bound to the spirit of a serial killer. Your main tool is an instant camera whose photos reveal things, and sometimes wake them up. First person, in a house that keeps folding in on itself. Very Positive, 87% of 3,010 reviews.
This is the dearest account in the guide: €25.19 with coupon Gocdkeys (€26.32 with fees) at Difmark. The only physical copy is the Possessed Edition at Amazon UK, €44.23 (no fees).
Ghosts from Japan and Taiwan
Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water
The fifth game in Koei Tecmo's series started life on the Wii U. In Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (Project Zero in Europe) the ghosts of Mount Hikami can only be fought with the Camera Obscura: frame them, let them come closer and take the shot at the right moment. Three playable characters, a mountain known for suicides, and water everywhere. Very Positive, 82% of 5,448 reviews.
Account only: €16.25 with coupon Gocdkeys (€16.98 with fees) at Difmark. Without the coupon it usually costs €19.35 (no fees).
Yomawari: Lost in the Dark
Nippon Ichi Software's third Yomawari. A cursed girl has until dawn to get her memories back, wandering a Japanese town full of spirits at night with only a torch. Top-down view, art that looks almost like a children's book, and creatures that look nothing of the sort. Yomawari: Lost in the Dark is Very Positive, 86% of 340 reviews.
It's the only game in the guide with eShop codes. The cheapest European code once fees are added is at G2A, €26.18 with coupon GCKG2AN7C5E (€26.47 with fees). Kinguin sells a European code and a North American one, both €25.11 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€27.46 with fees); the North American code only works on a Nintendo Account from that region. Difmark Digital Keys wants €40.36 with coupon Gocdkeys (€42.18 with fees) for another European code. Difmark's account costs €21.83 with coupon Gocdkeys (€22.81 with fees), and the Amazon DE cartridge €56.89 (no fees). The G2A code is €3.66 more than the account, and we'd pay it.
The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication
Softstar, the veteran Taiwanese studio behind the Sword and Fairy series, goes back to its country's folklore and urban legends. The Bridge Curse 2: The Extrication splits the story across several characters and sends you into hiding every time the ghost shows up. Very Positive, 93% of 2,514 reviews.
This is the exception in the guide, because the cheapest option is a cartridge: €17.05 (no fees) at Amazon UK. Difmark's account is €16.79 with coupon Gocdkeys, but fees take it to €17.55. Amazon ES has the cartridge at €22.71 and Amazon FR at €27.20, also with no fees.
Cults, an island and a hospital
Call of Cthulhu
Cyanide's take on Chaosium's tabletop RPG. In Call of Cthulhu you're Edward Pierce, a Boston private investigator in the twenties, sent to Darkwater Island to look into the death of the Hawkins family. There's far more questioning and reading than fighting, and Pierce's sanity takes a hit from what he sees. Mostly Positive, 79% of 10,981 reviews.

Saint Kotar
A point-and-click adventure set in Sveti Kotar, a fictional Croatian town. Benedek arrives looking for his missing sister and finds ritual murders and a cult nobody wants to talk about. Saint Kotar has the lowest score in the guide: Mostly Positive, 70% of 203 reviews.

Dementium: The Ward
It started on the Nintendo DS at Renegade Kid, and Jools Watsham has remade it with his current studio, Atooi. In Dementium: The Ward you wake up in a hospital with no idea why and explore it in first person. You can't hold the torch and a weapon at the same time, so every dark corridor forces a choice. Very Positive, 87% of 278 reviews.

If an account is fine for you, the four games rated Overwhelmingly Positive (Crow Country, SIGNALIS, DREDGE and Yuppie Psycho) come to €43.50 with fees at Difmark. Under €20, DREDGE and Yuppie Psycho together cost €18.06 with fees.
