Steam sticks its "Dungeon Crawler" tag on a wider mix than the name suggests: action roguelites built on short runs, turn-based expeditions seen in first person, a survival game against the clock and one where you lay out the dungeon yourself before walking into it. We started from the games that carry the tag, kept those with a PS5 page on Gocdkeys and offers updated this morning, and dropped anything with mixed reviews. Ten made it.

The scores are Steam reviews, so they describe the PC version; PlayStation doesn't publish player ratings we could use instead. Each table shows the cheapest account with fees, because it's the one format all ten have in stock today. The next section explains why we'd rather pay a bit more for a key when there is one.

Account, PSN code or disc: what you're buying on PS5

On these ten pages you'll find three kinds of offer, and the price only means something once you know which one you're looking at.

  • Account: a separate PlayStation account that already owns the game. You add it to your console and play, but the purchase never lands on your own account, and if the seller ever takes that account back, the game goes with it. Key4Games and Difmark sell one for all ten games, and Key4Games is the cheapest on every page. If you go this way, we explain the setup in how to activate a PS5 account with a game.
  • PSN Key: a code you redeem on your own PlayStation account, so the game is yours. A European key needs an account registered in Europe. This morning only Dunjungle and 9th Dawn Remake had one in stock, both at Kinguin. Wizard with a Gun also lists a PSN key, but at more than thirty times the price of the account, so ignore it.
  • Physical copy: Amazon France, Germany or the UK have the disc for seven of the ten: Cult of the Lamb, Darkest Dungeon II, Labyrinth of Galleria, SWORN, TMNT: Splintered Fate, Into the Restless Ruins and Wizard with a Gun. It costs more than the accounts, but you can lend it or sell it on.

Hades II, Dunjungle and Cult of the Lamb: roguelites for one more run

Hades II is the reason a lot of people search for this genre on PS5. Supergiant hands the lead to Melinoë, Zagreus's sister, a witch going after Chronos, the Titan who has taken over the Underworld. Every run takes you through chambers that change each time, and the Olympian gods offer boons that decide how your build turns out. When you die you wake up at the Crossroads, the hub where you spend what you've gathered on permanent upgrades and where the story moves on a little after each attempt. It's single-player only. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, 95% of 115,211 reviews.

No reseller has a PSN key for it this morning, only accounts. The cheapest is at Key4Games: €17.33 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€18.37 with fees). If you'd rather have it on your own account, set a price alert for Hades II and we'll email you when the price drops to what you want to pay.

Dunjungle is the smallest name here and the best rated of the ten: Overwhelmingly Positive, 96%, although from only 695 reviews. Bruno Bombardi made it and Astrolabe Games publishes it. You play a monkey in a jungle where a corrupting force has turned the locals against you, and you clear temples, crypts and dungeons assembled at random from hand-made rooms. Weapons, spells and relics can be combined with elements: fire burns enemies, ice slows them, wind pushes them away. There are no checkpoints, so dying sends you back to the start, but you unlock classes as you go, and the prisoners you free can help you on later runs.

It's also one of the two games here with a European PSN Key: €14.18 with coupon OCTGOC10 (€15.66 with fees) at Kinguin. The Key4Games account costs €10.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.57 with fees). About four euros more and the game is yours, and in our price history (without fees) the key has been cheaper on only 14 of 184 days. These are the cheapest offers this morning if you want to buy Dunjungle key:

Cult of the Lamb, by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, splits its time in two. You're a lamb saved from execution by a chained god, The One Who Waits, and you repay him by founding a cult. At camp you build, cook and preach to keep your followers loyal; then you set out on crusades through randomly generated dungeons, one region for each of the four bishops you have to bring down. A second player can join on the same console as the Goat. Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 112,876.

Which ones can you play with friends?

Four of the ten are built for company. Remember that online play on PS5 needs a PlayStation Plus subscription.

In SWORN, from Windwalk Games and Team17, Camelot has fallen and King Arthur has turned tyrant. You fight your way through it alone or with up to three others, and between fights the Fae Lords offer blessings, more than two hundred of them, which you combine with your character's weapon and abilities. Very Positive, 80% of 3,829.

TMNT: Splintered Fate sends the four turtles after Splinter. Super Evil Megacorp borrowed the Hades loop without hiding it: clear a room, choose an upgrade, start over when you go down. On PS5 it takes up to four players, on one console or online. It also appears in our guide to local co-op games on PS5. Very Positive, 83% of 4,191.

Wizard with a Gun, by Galvanic Games and published by Devolver Digital, is part survival game, part shooter. You head out into the Shatter, a world that falls apart under Chaos after a set time, gather materials and ammunition, and try to get back to your Tower before it ends. The Tower is where you craft, learn spells and upgrade your guns; when the world collapses, you turn back time and go out again. Since the free Better Together update, co-op goes up to four players. Very Positive, 80% of 2,949.

9th Dawn Remake, from Valorware, is the most traditional RPG of the lot. It rebuilds the game that started the 9th Dawn series: an open world with 45 dungeons, a story that begins with a lighthouse keeper who has disappeared and points to Maltyr Castle, and side activities such as hatching and training monsters to fight for you, a card mini-game and fishing. You can play it alone or with a friend, on one console or online. Very Positive, 86% of 519.

It's the other game here with a European key, and the cheapest way in this guide to own a copy: €6.11 with coupon OCTGOC10 (€6.95 with fees), PSN Key at Kinguin, against €3.60 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.01 with fees) for the Key4Games account. In 349 days of price history (without fees) we have never seen the key cheaper than it is now.

Turn-based expeditions and a dungeon you build with cards

Darkest Dungeon II puts four heroes on a stagecoach and sends them down the road to the Mountain. Red Hook keeps the turn-based fights, where each hero's place in the formation decides which skills they can use, and adds two things to watch besides health: stress, and how the heroes get along with each other. If the whole party falls, the expedition is over and you go back to the Altar of Hope, where the candles you earned unlock heroes and items for the next attempt. It has the weakest score in this guide: Mostly Positive, 74% of 24,432.

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society is first-person dungeon crawling the old way. Nippon Ichi Software, the team behind Labyrinth of Refrain: Coven of Dusk, casts you as a wandering spirit sealed in a lantern and summoned by Madame Marta. Eureka, who answered her job advert, carries you into the labyrinth under the mansion to recover the Curios d'Art. You move square by square, enemies only act when you take a step, and your army is made of puppet soldiers you build and organise through pacts, up to forty of them. Very Positive, 82% of 563.

In Into the Restless Ruins, by Ant Workshop and published by Wales Interactive, you make the dungeon. Each night you draw cards (corridors, rooms with weapons or stat boosts, campfires, portals) and lay out the ruins before going down. Fighting is automatic, in the style of Vampire Survivors, and your torch is the clock: once it burns out, every second in the dark costs health. Dying doesn't end the run straight away; it fills a corruption meter that adds curse cards to your hand, and when the meter is full you start again. It draws on Scottish folklore and can be played entirely in Scottish Gaelic. Very Positive, 83%, from the smallest sample here: 109 reviews.

Why Diablo IV, AI LIMIT and Titan Quest II aren't here

All three carry the Dungeon Crawler tag on Steam and have a PS5 page with us. Diablo IV is out because of its reviews: Mixed, 69% of 61,560. AI LIMIT is well liked (Very Positive, 91%), but it plays like a souls-like built around bosses rather than a dungeon crawl, so it fits better in our guide to the best souls-likes on PS5. And Titan Quest II hasn't come out on PS5 yet and has no confirmed date, so anything on its page is a pre-order. If you're waiting for it, set a price alert for Titan Quest II.

Which one should you start with?

Playing alone, Hades II is the safe bet, even if for now it's accounts only. For a group, SWORN and TMNT: Splintered Fate are the most direct, and Wizard with a Gun suits people who like gathering and building between fights. If you want the game on your own account without paying much, Dunjungle and 9th Dawn Remake are the two with European keys this morning. Labyrinth of Galleria is for anyone with patience for mapping corridors, and Into the Restless Ruins for those who'd rather plan a dungeon than react to one.

On another console? We have separate picks for Nintendo Switch and Xbox.

Prices checked on the morning of 15 October.
