Sixteen dungeon crawlers are on sale for Xbox in our price comparison this morning, and if all you wanted was the cheapest offer for each one, the lot would come to €102.52 with fees. Owning all sixteen on your own Xbox account costs €229.28. That €126.76 gap is the thread running through this list, because on some of these games the cheaper option saves you about a euro and on others it saves you more than twenty.
"Dungeon crawler" is a loose label. We took it from Steam's tags, and Steam uses it for anything where you head underground (or into a tower, a crypt or an Alpine gorge), fight whatever lives there, pick up loot and come back stronger. So you'll find fast action roguelites next to old-fashioned grid dungeons in first person, a couple of deckbuilders, loot-driven action RPGs, turn-based tactics and two or three games that are happy to let you relax between fights.
A note on the reviews: Xbox has no public review score that compares with Steam's, so the verdicts quoted below are from the PC version of each game. They tell you how the game went down with players, not how the Xbox port runs.
Account, Xbox Key or Microsoft Store: what each offer gets you
Four kinds of offer turn up on the Xbox pages for these games, and they are not interchangeable.
- Account: you get the login for somebody else's Xbox account that already owns the game. You play it through that account; nothing is added to yours. There's an Account offer for all sixteen games, Difmark sells one for fifteen of them, and it is almost always the lowest price on the page.
- Xbox Key (sometimes listed as PC Key / Xbox Key, which also works on Windows): a code you redeem on your own account, so the game stays with you. Check the region before paying. A US key only redeems on a US account; if you're buying from Europe, stick to Europe or Global keys.
- Microsoft Store ES: the official store. You pay the listed price with no fees on top, and the game goes straight into your library.
- Physical copy: only one game here has one on sale, Dragonkin: The Banished, at Amazon ES.
We'd rather you ended up with a copy of your own, so for every game you get two numbers: the cheapest offer in any format and the cheapest copy you keep. Which one you pay for is up to you.
Roguelites and deckbuilders for one more run
Hades II is the obvious place to start. Supergiant's sequel swaps Zagreus for his sister Melinoë, a witch fighting her way towards Chronos, and keeps the structure that made the first game so hard to put down: short runs through changing chambers, gifts from the gods of Olympus and a hub where the story moves on every time you die. On Steam it sits at Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 113,165 reviews.
It's also the only game on this list without a European key on sale today. The cheapest offer is €13.43 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€14.03 with fees), Account, at Difmark. The only key is a US one: €24.64 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€27.31 with fees), PC Key / Xbox Key, at Eneba, and it won't redeem on a European account. For a copy of your own, the Microsoft Store ES is the route, at €29.99 (no fees). SWORN, from Windwalk Games and published by Team17, is a co-op action roguelite with an Arthurian setting: Camelot has fallen and you fight back through it with friends. Very Positive on Steam (80% of 3,779 reviews). The Account costs €3.40 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€3.55 with fees) at Difmark, while a PC Key / Xbox Key for Europe is €4.89 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€5.81 with fees) at Gamivo. That's €2.26 more for a game you actually own.
Wizard with a Gun (Galvanic Games, published by Devolver Digital) mixes shooting and spellcasting with survival and base building, and you can play it in co-op. Very Positive, 80% of 2,932 reviews. The Account is €8.39 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€8.77 with fees) at Difmark. The cheapest European key is at Kinguin: €13.51 with the coupon SEPGOC10 (€14.93 with fees), Xbox Key. Kinguin also has a second European key further down, at €39.65 with the coupon SEPGOC10 (€43.15 with fees), so check you're clicking the right one.
Two of the sixteen swap swords for cards. HELLCARD is a co-op roguelike deckbuilder from Thing Trunk, the Book of Demons studio, published by Skystone Games, and it keeps that game's paper cut-out look. Very Positive, 86% of 3,368 reviews. Knock on the Coffin Lid, by RedBoon, is a dark-fantasy deckbuilding roguelite. Very Positive, 82% of 2,727 reviews.
These two show the gap between the formats at its widest. HELLCARD's Account costs €2.77 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€2.89 with fees) at Difmark, but the cheapest European key is €17.96 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€19.58 with fees), Xbox Key, at Gamivo. Knock on the Coffin Lid is €3.53 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€3.69 with fees), Account, at Difmark, against €24.99 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€26.85 with fees), Xbox Key, at Gamivo. On both, the key costs several times the Account, and we wouldn't pay either price blind: a price alert on Knock on the Coffin Lid is the better move if you want your own copy.
Loot and levels: the action RPGs
Diablo II: Resurrected – Infernal Edition is Blizzard's remaster of the game a lot of people still measure every action RPG against: pick a class, clear the acts, farm the same bosses for better drops. Very Positive, 86% of 5,923 reviews. It's also the most expensive Account on the list, €16.79 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€17.55 with fees) at Difmark, and that's exactly why the key looks good here. Gamivo has an Xbox Key for Europe at €19.61 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€21.29 with fees), just €3.74 more. The Microsoft Store ES asks €27.99 (no fees) for its digital copy.
Dragonkin: The Banished is a loot-driven action RPG from Eko Software, the team behind Warhammer: Chaosbane, published by Nacon. Steam is cooler on it: Mostly Positive, 72% of 2,243 reviews. The Account costs €10.58 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€11.06 with fees) at Difmark. The cheapest European key is €28.83 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€30.83 with fees), Xbox Key, at Gamivo, and it's the only game here with a boxed copy on sale: €39.90 (no fees), physical copy, at Amazon ES.
Nobody Saves the World is the odd one out. Drinkbox, who made Guacamelee!, built an action RPG around a nobody who can turn into a string of different forms, from a rat to a horse to a slug, and mix their abilities. Very Positive, 91% of 5,786 reviews. Account: €4.53 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€4.73 with fees) at Difmark. Your own copy: €10.65 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€12.01 with fees), Xbox Key for Europe, at Gamivo.
First-person grids and turn-based tactics
This is the slower corner of the genre. Wizardry: Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord is Digital Eclipse's remake of the original Wizardry, the game that set out the rules for party-based, first-person dungeon crawling: build a party, map the maze square by square, try not to lose everyone on the next floor down. Mostly Positive, 77% of 1,211 reviews. Account: €5.87 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€6.13 with fees) at Difmark. Own copy: €9.64 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€10.97 with fees), Xbox Key for Europe, at Gamivo.
Labyrinth of the Demon King, by J. R. Hudepohl and published by Top Hat Studios, takes that first-person view and turns it into a horror game, with a deliberately rough, old-school look. It has one of the best scores on the list: Very Positive, 92% of 2,116 reviews. Account: €7.55 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€7.89 with fees) at Difmark. Own copy: €13.61 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€15.08 with fees), Xbox Key for Europe, at Gamivo.
ELDERBORN from Hyperstrange is first-person too, but fast: a dark-fantasy game built on melee combat. Very Positive, 87% of 2,229 reviews. It has the lowest price in the whole list, €0.80 with the coupon SEPGOC10 (€1.21 with fees), Account, at Kinguin. For your own copy, Driffle has a PC Key / Xbox Key for Europe at €6.28 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€6.91 with fees).
Then the turn-based pair. Darkest Dungeon II is Red Hook's sequel, and it moves the party onto the road: you take four heroes and a stagecoach on a journey, and their stress and their relationships with each other matter as much as their hit points. Steam players are more split on it than on most of this list: Mostly Positive, 74% of 24,272 reviews. The Account costs €5.03 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€5.26 with fees) at Difmark. The cheapest European key is €9.56 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€10.88 with fees), Xbox Key, at Gamivo. Cdkeys Com has a PC Key / Xbox Key at €10.29 (no fees), but it's a US key.
Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, by Bulwark Studios and published by Kasedo Games, puts you in charge of the Adeptus Mechanicus as they explore Necron tombs, in turn-based tactical fights. Very Positive, 91% of 11,279 reviews. It's the easiest recommendation on the list: the Account is €3.35 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€3.50 with fees) at Difmark, and a European key is €4.32 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€5.23 with fees), Xbox Key, at Eneba. That's €1.73 more for your own copy. The same game costs €39.99 (no fees) at the Microsoft Store ES.
Dungeons with a lighter touch
Dungeons of Hinterberg (Microbird Games, published by Curve Games) sends you on holiday to an Austrian village in the Alps where the dungeons are a tourist attraction. You clear them by day and spend the evenings with the locals. Very Positive, 93% of 2,403 reviews, the best score on this list after Hades II. The Account is €5.03 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€5.26 with fees) at Difmark. The cheapest key that works outside the US is Global: €8.87 with the coupon SEPGOC10 (€9.93 with fees), Xbox Key, at Kinguin. Eneba's €7.85 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€9.07 with fees), Xbox Key, is cheaper, but it's a US key.
Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (NatsumeAtari, published by 505 Games) is a side-scrolling action RPG and the smaller companion to Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, with a town to rebuild between trips into the surrounding areas. Very Positive, 85% of 2,075 reviews. It's cheap in every format: €2.51 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€2.62 with fees), Account, at Difmark; €2.77 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€3.62 with fees), Xbox Key for Europe, at Gamivo; and €3.74 (no fees) at the Microsoft Store ES. Only 12 cents separate the Gamivo key from the official store.
Portal Knights by Keen Games, published by 505 Games, is a block-built action RPG: you dig, build and fight your way across islands linked by portals, and you can play it in co-op. Very Positive, 83% of 16,885 reviews. The Account costs €4.19 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€4.38 with fees) at Difmark, and the cheapest European key is €5.08 with the coupon GCKG2AH9K2L (€5.37 with fees), Xbox Key, at G2A: 99 cents between them. There's a Kinguin key at €1.53 with the coupon SEPGOC10 (€2.00 with fees), but it's region US and only works on a US account.

Add up the third column and you get €102.52 with fees; the fourth comes to €229.28. For Portal Knights we counted the Account, not the US key, and for Dragonkin the Gamivo key rather than the boxed copy.
What we'd buy today
Start with the games where owning a copy costs almost the same as borrowing an account. Eiyuden Chronicle: Rising (€1.00 between the two), Portal Knights (99 cents), Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus (€1.73) and SWORN (€2.26) are easy calls: take the key and forget about it. Diablo II: Resurrected – Infernal Edition is in the same camp once you look at the €3.74 gap rather than the total.
Wizardry, ELDERBORN, Darkest Dungeon II, Dungeons of Hinterberg, Labyrinth of the Demon King, Nobody Saves the World and Wizard with a Gun all sit somewhere between €4.67 and €7.28 apart. The keys are reasonably priced, and it's worth paying the difference to keep the game.
HELLCARD, Knock on the Coffin Lid and Dragonkin are where we'd wait. The key costs €16.69, €23.16 and €19.77 more than the Account, and the Account is still somebody else's login. Hades II is a special case: the game is the one we'd buy first, but with no European key on sale, the €29.99 at the Microsoft Store ES is the realistic price for your own copy today, unless you put an alert on it and wait.
