Local co-op is still the thing a PS5 under the telly does better than any PC on a desk: one console, one screen, a second controller and somebody next to you who can see exactly where you went wrong. These sixteen games are the ones we would put on the sofa right now, from Hazelight's stories for two to a Turtles brawler that takes six players at once. For each one we give two prices, both read on 19 September: the cheapest offer in our comparator, and the cheapest copy that actually belongs to you.
Those two figures are rarely the same purchase. In fifteen of the sixteen games, the lowest price on PS5 is an Account, and that is worth understanding before you click anything.
Account, PlayStation Store or disc: what each PS5 offer gets you
An Account offer hands you the login to a PlayStation account owned by the seller. The game was bought on that account and it stays there; it is never added to yours. For a couch co-op night that means running somebody else's profile on your own console, and if the seller changes the password or the account gets shut down, the game disappears from your PS5 along with it.
A copy you keep comes in two shapes. The PSN Key sold by the PlayStation Store goes onto your own account and stays there for good. The physical copy from Amazon or Media Markt is a disc you can lend to the friend who sits on the other end of the sofa, or sell once you have finished, provided your PS5 has a disc drive. Our advice is to buy one of those two. All the prices are below anyway, so the choice is yours.
Offer prices come in pairs: what the shop advertises, and what you actually pay once its payment fee is added, with the coupon code right next to the price when you need one. Physical copies and the PlayStation Store carry no fees. The Steam verdicts belong to the PC version of each game, because that is where the reviews are counted.
Stories written for exactly two players
Split Fiction is Hazelight's latest, and if you own one PS5 and have one friend, it is the most generous game on this list. Mio and Zoe are two writers, one of science fiction and one of fantasy, who get trapped inside a machine built to steal their ideas, so the levels keep jumping between spaceships and dragons and hardly ever reuse a mechanic. It is strictly for two players, in split screen, and a single copy covers both of you on the same console. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, from 78,378 reviews.
Only LEGO Batman, further down, shows a wider gap between the two prices. GamesPSN sells an Account at €10.10, no fees, and Difmark another at €10.14 with coupon Gocdkeys (€10.60 with fees). G2A, Kinguin and Consogame have accounts too, the dearest being Consogame at €29.99, no fees. A copy of your own costs €49.99, no fees, and two options tie on that figure: the physical copy at Media Markt ES and the PSN Key on the PlayStation Store. That is €39.89 more than the cheapest account. If you want to buy Split Fiction key for your own account, it is the PlayStation Store; if you want something you can pass on afterwards, the disc costs exactly the same.
It Takes Two came first and set the rules Split Fiction follows: two players, split screen, one copy on the console. Cody and May are a couple on the edge of divorce who wake up inside a pair of dolls their daughter made, while a talking self-help book is determined to save their marriage whether they like it or not. It won Game of the Year at The Game Awards. We do not have its Steam verdict in our records, so we will leave that out rather than guess.
Difmark has an Account at €9.23 with coupon Gocdkeys (€9.65 with fees), Kinguin another at €18.11 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€19.90 with fees), and G2A a third at €28.19 (€28.48 with fees). The copy you keep is the PSN Key on the PlayStation Store at €39.99, no fees. Put the two Hazelight games together and the accounts save €70.23 against copies of your own, which is a third of the gap across all sixteen games. If that is the one you are after, you can buy It Takes Two key at the official price and it will still be there the day you want to replay it.
Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons Remake is where Josef Fares began, before he founded Hazelight. Avantgarden rebuilt it and 505 Games published it: two brothers cross a fairy-tale kingdom looking for a cure for their father. The original trick survives, with one player steering both brothers using the two halves of a single controller, and the remake adds optional co-op, so two people can share one controller or take one each. Mostly Positive on Steam, 997 reviews.

LEGO Voyagers comes from Light Brick Studio, the team behind LEGO Builder's Journey, and is published by Annapurna. It is a puzzle platformer for two about a pair of small LEGO bricks who have to help each other along, and it is the gentlest thing in this section. Very Positive, 1,859 reviews.

Kitchens, removal vans and bodies made of jelly
Overcooked! All You Can Eat bundles Overcooked! and Overcooked! 2, remastered, into one package. Up to four cooks share a kitchen that splits in half, drifts on ice floes or catches fire halfway through the order, and the game is really about who shouts first. Ghost Town Games made it and Team17 publishes it. This compilation has no Steam page of its own, so the verdict we have is for Overcooked! 2 alone: Very Positive, 61,975 reviews.
The cheapest offer is a Difmark Account at €10.07 with coupon Gocdkeys (€10.52 with fees). The cheapest copy you keep is the disc at Amazon UK, €19.76, no fees, followed by Amazon FR at €19.99 and Amazon ES at €22.99, both with no fees. The PSN Key on the PlayStation Store is €39.99, no fees, twice the price of the physical copy, so this is one game where the box on the shelf wins outright.
Moving Out 2 is SMG Studio's removal-company comedy, published by Team17: carry the sofa between two of you, throw the boxes through the window, and try not to put the fridge through the television. Mostly Positive, 456 reviews.
This is where the account stops making any sense. Difmark sells one at €6.29 with coupon Gocdkeys (€6.57 with fees), and the PSN Key on the PlayStation Store costs €7.49, no fees: 92 cents more for a copy that is yours. The discs are the dear option here, from €23.24 at Amazon UK to €27.64 at Amazon ES and €42.86 at Amazon FR, all with no fees.
Human Fall Flat gives you Bob, a doughy little man with no bones to speak of, and a series of dream levels where you grab, climb and swing with one arm at a time. Alone it is a physics puzzle; with a second player it turns into slapstick, because the quickest way across a gap is usually to throw your friend over it. No Brakes Games made it and Curve Games publishes it. Only Vampire Survivors has more reviews on this list: Very Positive from 174,835.

Arcade beat 'em ups with room for the whole sofa
TMNT: Shredder's Revenge is the brawler that pulls in the most people at once: up to six players, the four turtles plus April O'Neil and Splinter, in pixel art that looks like the arcade cabinets of the nineties. Tribute Games developed it and Dotemu published it; Tribute are also the studio behind MARVEL Cosmic Invasion, which joins Game Pass Premium today. Very Positive, 12,961 reviews.

Absolum is Dotemu's own fantasy brawler, from the publisher that brought back Streets of Rage 4. Each run through its hand-drawn world changes with the upgrades you pick, so it plays like a beat 'em up crossed with a roguelite, and a second player makes the crowded screens far more manageable. Very Positive, 9,399 reviews.

TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection is thirteen Konami Turtles games from the arcades and the old consoles, Turtles in Time included, gathered by Digital Eclipse. If you grew up with them, this is the museum; if you did not, it is the best explanation of why Shredder's Revenge looks the way it does. Very Positive, 789 reviews.

Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons brings Billy and Jimmy Lee back with Marian and Uncle Matin in the team, and has you pick two fighters to swap between on the fly. Secret Base developed it and Maximum Entertainment publishes it. Very Positive, 1,270 reviews.

Roguelites for when nobody wants to go to bed
TMNT: Splintered Fate is the other face of the Turtles on this list: a roguelite from Super Evil Megacorp, with runs, upgrades between attempts and fights that change every time you go back in. Very Positive, 4,145 reviews.
It has the strangest price spread of the sixteen. Difmark sells an Account at €6.04 with coupon Gocdkeys (€6.31 with fees), while the cheapest copy of your own is the disc at Amazon FR, €23.49, no fees. After that come Amazon ES at €24.61 and Amazon UK at €27.66 (a UK region copy), the PSN Key on the PlayStation Store at €28.49 and Amazon DE at €30.39, all with no fees. €17.18 between the account and the disc, and here the physical copy is cheaper than the digital one.
Ember Knights is a fast pixel-art action roguelite from Doom Turtle, published by Twin Sails Interactive, built for dashing through rooms in a group and fighting over who picks up the loot. Very Positive, 6,065 reviews.

Vampire Survivors is the game that proved you can hook people for months with a single button and a screen full of bats. poncle added local co-op for up to four, and on a big television it becomes a group exercise in not being able to tell which character is yours. Overwhelmingly Positive, 251,711 reviews.
Only one shop sells it: the PlayStation Store, €3.99, no fees, PSN Key. It is the cheapest game on the whole list and, for once, the cheapest price is already a copy you own.
Two picks for playing with the kids
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight takes TT Games back to Gotham, with Warner Bros. Games publishing, and TT has always built its LEGO games so that a second player can drop in just by picking up a controller. It is the most expensive game here and one of the best rated: Overwhelmingly Positive, 8,745 reviews.
The offers are all accounts until you reach the discs. Difmark: €24.00 with coupon Gocdkeys (€25.08 with fees). G2A: €24.96 with coupon GCKG2AH9K2L (€25.25 with fees). GamesPSN: €25.18, no fees. The cheapest copy of your own is the physical one at Media Markt ES, €65.99, no fees, just under the PSN Key on the PlayStation Store at €69.99, no fees. €40.91 separates the account from the disc, the biggest gap on this list. For a game children will want to come back to, that is exactly the purchase where a borrowed login worries us most. If €65.99 is too much today, you can set a price alert and wait for the next drop.
Bang-On Balls: Chronicles is Exit Plan Games' 3D platformer, published by Untold Tales, in which you are a ball bouncing and smashing your way through themed worlds full of Vikings, pirates and things to break. Children understand it in half a minute. Overwhelmingly Positive, 4,334 reviews.
Difmark has an Account at €7.93 with coupon Gocdkeys (€8.29 with fees) and Kinguin another at €22.84 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€25.01 with fees). Kinguin also sells a PSN Key at €22.50 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€24.64 with fees), but it is a US region key and only works on American PlayStation accounts. Add up the cheapest offer for each game, fees included, and the sixteen come to €203.19. Add up the cheapest copy you keep and they come to €414.27. The €211.08 between those two totals is what the account route saves you, and more than half of it comes from three games: LEGO Batman (€40.91), Split Fiction (€39.89) and It Takes Two (€30.34). Buying all sixteen as PSN Keys on the PlayStation Store would cost €447.84.
Two of them need no thinking at all. Vampire Survivors costs €3.99, no fees, and is already yours; Moving Out 2 is €7.49, no fees, at the PlayStation Store, 92 cents over the account. And if the plan is one game for two people on one sofa, one copy of Split Fiction or It Takes Two does the job for both of you.
