On Wednesday, 21 October, EA announced that it is closing BioWare and its Edmonton studio, and that it won't carry on with the next Mass Effect, which was still at an early stage of development. EA put it this way: "We've made the decision not to move forward with this development, which means we're closing the studio and our Edmonton workspace." BioWare said goodbye on social media with a message about its more than 30 years of history.
The games that are already out are still on sale; they're in this morning's offers. If the news has you wanting to go back to Shepard, or to play the series for the first time, here's what you can buy, in which format, and why the same remaster costs about five euros on Xbox and over thirty on PC.
What EA has announced, and what it hasn't
According to an internal letter published by Bloomberg, EA is cutting around 400 jobs, roughly 3% of its workforce, and about 50 of them are at BioWare. EA has been a private company since August, after the $55 billion buyout led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). BioWare's last release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, sold below what EA expected.
The cancelled game never got an official name. The press calls it Mass Effect 5; EA only talks about "the next Mass Effect project".
As for the games you can already play, EA hasn't said a word about servers or about taking them off stores, so there's nothing to report there. Mass Effect Legendary Edition is a single-player game.
The Mass Effect games on sale today
- Mass Effect Legendary Edition: the remaster of the original trilogy (Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3) in a single package. PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
- Mass Effect Andromeda: the fourth game, with a new cast and its own story in another galaxy. PC, Xbox One and PS4.
- Mass Effect Trilogy: the three original games as they were before the remaster. PC only.
Prices change a lot depending on where you play, so we've split them by platform.
On Xbox, the whole trilogy costs about five euros
This is where the bargain is. G2A sells the Xbox Key (Europe region) for €5.09 with the GCKG2AM4E7H coupon (€5.38 with fees). The Microsoft Store charges €69.99 (no fees) for the same game, so you save 92% even with the fees added.
Check the region before you pay. A Europe key is meant for an Xbox account registered in a European country. If yours is set somewhere else, Eneba has the global Xbox Key for €4.67 with the Gocdkeys10 coupon (€5.61 with fees). It's the console version, playable on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, and it doesn't get you the game on PC.
There's an even cheaper option, an Account at Key4Games for €3.65 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.07 with fees). An account isn't a key: you're given access to someone else's account that already owns the game. For €1.31 more you get a key on your own account, and that's what we'd buy.
This price isn't a reaction to the closure, by the way. The median for the Xbox Key in our history is €6.47, and it has been cheaper than today on 179 of the 487 days we've tracked (historical figures don't include fees). So today is a normal day for this game on Xbox, slightly below the usual. All the offers are on the page to buy Mass Effect Legendary Edition key for Xbox.
On PlayStation, it's accounts or the official store
The only PSN Key we can point you to is the PlayStation Store's own, at €69.99 (no fees). What it sells is the PS4 version, which also runs on PS5.
Everything cheaper is an account. For PS4, Difmark has one for €5.87 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€6.13 with fees). For PS5, Key4Games sells one for €4.33 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.78 with fees).
We always recommend a key when there is one. Here there isn't, so the choice is between paying €69.99 at the official store or playing on an account that isn't yours for a fraction of that. You'll find both on the Mass Effect Legendary Edition PS4 and Mass Effect Legendary Edition PS5 pages.
Why it costs over thirty euros on PC
There's no console-style bargain on PC this morning. The cheapest key is Eneba's EA App Key, €30.87 with the Gocdkeys10 coupon (€34.08 with fees), which you activate in the EA app. If you want it in your Steam library, the cheapest Steam Key is at Itemku for €34.92 with no coupon (€36.64 with fees), and after that everything is above €46 with fees.
The gap with Xbox has a simple explanation: they're different products. An Xbox key only goes on an Xbox account and only plays on the console; a PC key goes on the EA app or Steam. Each one is sold with its own stock and its own price, so a cheap Xbox key tells you nothing about the PC version. We have seen the Mass Effect Legendary Edition PC key much cheaper on other days.
If you only care about the story, there's a cheaper way in on PC: Mass Effect Trilogy, the original versions without the remaster, as an EA App Key at YUPLAY for €12.75 (no fees). Check the region on the store's page before buying.
Which one to start with
Legendary Edition. It has Shepard's whole story, the three games in order, and the decisions you make in one carry over to the next. On console it's also the cheapest way into the series.
Andromeda can wait. It's a separate story with new characters, and you don't need the trilogy to follow it. On Xbox, Eneba has the Mass Effect Andromeda Xbox Key (Europe region) for €4.14 with Gocdkeys10 (€5.04 with fees), against €17.99 (no fees) at the Microsoft Store. On PC, the Mass Effect Andromeda EA App Key is at Gamivo for €17.71 with GCDKGamivo (€19.32 with fees).
Playing on PC and €34.08 feels like too much? Set a price alert for Mass Effect Legendary Edition and we'll email you when it drops.
