Xbox owners tend to hear about visual novels last, even though the store has more of them than you'd think. If you've never played one: it's a game told mostly through text, character art and voices, where your decisions, and sometimes a few puzzles, steer the story. Think of a choose-your-own-adventure book with a soundtrack.
We went through every visual novel in our catalogue with Xbox offers in stock this morning and kept eleven. Nearly all are the real thing; the exception is Venba, which sits next to the genre, and we say so. Scores come from Steam, because that's where we have them: the share of positive reviews for the PC version and how many there are. No data, no score. Prices show the base amount, with the coupon if there is one, and then in brackets what you pay once the store adds its payment fee.
Three things to check before paying
Region. Xbox keys are sold by region, so we tell you which one each offer is for. Stick to the one that matches your Microsoft account. A cheap US or Argentina key that won't redeem is no bargain, which is why every price below is for a European offer.
Language. Most of these games are in English only, and reading is the whole game, so it matters more than usual. We haven't checked each one, so look at the supported languages on the Microsoft Store page before you buy.
Format. A key gets redeemed on your own account and the game stays in your library. Many of these games are also sold as Xbox accounts, which is the login for an account somebody else owns. Zero Time Dilemma shows the gap: Key4Games has an account for €2.45 with the GOCDKEYS15 coupon (€2.81 with fees), while a G2A key costs €4.87 with GCKG2AF1P6K (€5.16 with fees). The account is cheaper because the game never becomes yours, and it can stop working if the seller takes it back. We recommend the key, and only quote key prices below. There's more on this in our guide to Xbox keys and Xbox accounts.
Mysteries and puzzles: GNOSIA, Zero Time Dilemma and the Somnium Files games
GNOSIA is our top pick. You're on a spaceship with a crew that may include Gnosia, beings hiding among the humans, and each round you debate, accuse and vote someone into cold sleep. Think of it as a solo game of Werewolf inside a time loop: each loop reshuffles who's who, and your character keeps learning. Sessions are short, which makes it dangerously easy to do one more. 93% of its 4,919 Steam reviews are positive. G2A has an Xbox key for Europe, sold as PC / Xbox, at €15.56 with GCKG2AF1P6K (€15.85 with fees). The page to buy GNOSIA key shows every offer.
Zero Time Dilemma is the third Zero Escape game, written by Kotaro Uchikoshi. Nine people are locked in a shelter and split into three teams, and the way out depends on some terrible votes. You pick story fragments in whatever order you like, and between them come escape-room puzzles. Our Xbox catalogue doesn't have the first two games, so you'd be starting at the end of a trilogy; it's playable, but some of the payoffs land harder if you know what came before. 81% of 4,703 reviews are positive. A G2A key for Europe is the €4.87 with GCKG2AF1P6K we mentioned above (€5.16 with fees).
AI: The Somnium Files is also Uchikoshi's, and it's the easiest way in if you're new to all this. Kaname Date, a detective with an AI living in his artificial eye, chases a serial killer through Tokyo. Interrogation scenes alternate with Somnia, dreams of suspects that you explore against a six-minute limit. It's the bargain of the list: €4.13 (€4.78 with fees) for a key for Europe at Kinguin, no coupon needed. We have no Steam score for it.
AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative is the sequel, with a case that starts when half a body turns up and the other half follows years later. Play it second. 86% of 3,608 reviews are positive, and Kinguin sells a PC / Xbox key for Europe at €13.50 (€14.82 with fees).
Stories that branch depending on what you choose
Digimon Survive looks like a kids' game and isn't. A group of students on a school camp end up in a world of monsters, and your choices decide who gets through it, and how your partner Agumon evolves. There are grid-based battles, but you spend far more time reading than fighting. No Steam score here. Driffle has an Xbox key for Europe at €6.32 with GOCDKEYS10 (€6.95 with fees).
Vampire: The Masquerade - Coteries of New York is the pure option. You're a newly turned vampire in New York, you pick one of three clans, and you build your circle of allies. Eneba has an Xbox key for Europe at €16.59 with Gocdkeys10 (€18.56 with fees). Shadows of New York is a shorter story in the same city, following Julia, at €10.07 with the same coupon (€11.48 with fees), also an Xbox key for Europe at Eneba. Neither has a Steam score with us.
Horror: Raging Loop and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus
Raging Loop takes the Werewolf idea from GNOSIA and moves it to a remote Japanese mountain village. Each night someone dies, the villagers have rules nobody explains, and Haruaki, the protagonist, comes back after his own death remembering what happened. It's long and heavy on dialogue, and it rewards patience. No Steam score. G2A's key for Europe is €10.88 with GCKG2AF1P6K (€11.17 with fees).
Doki Doki Literature Club Plus starts as a sweet school dating sim with a poetry club. Don't let that fool you, and know what you're getting into: it's psychological horror and deals with mental health and self-harm, so it isn't for everyone. The less you read about it beforehand, the better. Kinguin sells an Xbox key for Europe at €9.45 (€10.48 with fees). No Steam score.
Romance and quiet evenings: Date Everything and Venba
Date Everything hands you a pair of glasses that turn the objects in your home into characters you can date, and there are more than a hundred of them. Yes, including the furniture. It's funny, and 93% of 6,751 reviews are positive. Kinguin has a PC / Xbox key for Europe at €9.16 (€10.17 with fees).
Venba is the shortest and gentlest game here. It follows a Tamil family who emigrate to Canada, told through the dishes a mother cooks from a damaged recipe book. Not a visual novel in the strict sense, but if you like reading and taking your time, it fits. 93% of 2,490 reviews are positive. Eneba's key for Europe, sold as PC / Xbox, is €12.49 with Gocdkeys10 (€14.11 with fees).
If what you're after is detective work, Ghost Trick and the Apollo Justice and Investigations collections are in our guide to detective games on Xbox.
