Big releases have mostly given up on split screen, but Xbox still has a good stock of games you can play with one console and a few controllers on the same sofa. We went through the Xbox pages on Gocdkeys that had offers in stock this morning, kept the ones with local co-op and good Steam reviews, left out the yearly sports games and anything rated Mixed, and ended up with fifteen.
The scores are Steam's, so they describe the PC version. When we give a number of players, it's how many can play on one console. If we aren't certain of the figure for the Xbox version, we don't give one.
Account, European code or Microsoft Store: what you're buying on Xbox
On all fifteen pages the cheapest offer this morning was an account, and on some the gap to a proper key is more than twenty euros. Before you compare prices, check which of these you're looking at:
- Account: Key4Games, Difmark, G2A, Kinguin and a few others sell access to a Microsoft account that already owns the game. You play on your own Xbox, but the purchase isn't on your account, and if the seller ever takes that account back, the game goes with it.
- Xbox key: a code you redeem on your own Microsoft account, so the game stays yours. Every offer shows a region, and on these pages they were Europe, US, UK and Global. We didn't find any of the Argentina or Turkey keys that turn up on other Xbox games. A European or Global key is the simple choice for an account set up in Europe; if the cheap one is a US or UK key, read the store's activation conditions for your account's region before you pay.
- PC Key / Xbox Key: a few offers are listed as one code that works on both PC and Xbox. The cheapest European code for Children of Morta is one of them.
- Microsoft Store: the official store only shows a price on three of these pages: Unrailed at €19.99 (no fees), Children of Morta at €21.99 (no fees) and Double Dragon Gaiden at €24.99 (no fees).
If you're unsure which format suits you, we go through both in Xbox key or Xbox account. The table at the end shows two prices for each game, with fees: the cheapest account and the cheapest European code.
Split Fiction, Cuphead and Sonic Mania: three games for two players
Split Fiction is Hazelight's latest and, like It Takes Two, it can't be played alone. Mio and Zoe, two writers, get trapped inside a machine that turns their stories into worlds, one science fiction and one fantasy, and the rules change from one chapter to the next. Two players share the screen on one console or play online. It's the best-rated game on this list: Overwhelmingly Positive, 97% of 79,221 Steam reviews.
It's also where the format matters most. Key4Games sells the account for €12.27 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€13.08 with fees), while the cheapest European key is at Eneba for €33.29 with coupon Gocdkeys10 (€36.70 with fees). Gamivo has a US key for €28.38 with GCDKGamivo (€30.36 with fees), and Amazon DE lists the disc at €31.50 (no fees). These are the five cheapest offers this morning if you want to buy Split Fiction Xbox key:
And this is what customers of those stores say on Trustpilot:
- Instant Gaming — 4.7 / 5 over 833,000+ reviews.
- Greenmangaming — 4.7 / 5 over 43,000+ reviews.
- Kinguin — 4.6 / 5 over 120,000+ reviews.
- Eneba — 4.4 / 5 over 312,000+ reviews.
- Driffle — 4.4 / 5 over 9,000+ reviews.
Cuphead is a run-and-gun built almost entirely out of boss fights, drawn and animated by hand like the rubber-hose cartoons of the thirties. The second player takes Mugman on the same console, and when one of you goes down, the other can bring them back by parrying the ghost before it floats off the screen. Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% of 200,216. The Key4Games account costs €4.84 with GOCDKEYS15 (€5.31 with fees); the cheapest key, a Global one at Gameseal, is €9.38 with SEAL17CKD (€10.50 with fees).
Sonic Mania plays like a lost Mega Drive Sonic, with redrawn classic zones and new ones. A second player can take Tails along through the main game, and there's a separate split-screen race mode. Very Positive, 94%. Here the account saves you nothing worth mentioning: Difmark sells it for €1.11 with coupon Gocdkeys (€1.16 with fees), and Difmark Digital Keys has a Global key for €1.72 with the same coupon (€1.80 with fees). For under a euro more, we'd take the key.
Overcooked 2, Unrailed and The Escapists 2: shouting at each other with friends
Overcooked 2 needs no introduction for anyone who has played it at a party. Up to four players run a kitchen that splits in half, slides around or sits on a moving truck, and this time you can throw ingredients across the room. Very Positive, 90% of 62,469. Difmark has the account for €0.92 with Gocdkeys (€0.96 with fees), and the cheapest European key is at Gameseal for €4.25 with SEAL17CKD (€4.98 with fees).
Unrailed works the same nerves with a train that never stops. You chop wood and mine iron, craft the rails and lay them in front of the engine before it runs out of track, on maps generated for each run. Up to four players. Very Positive, 93%. It's one of the smallest pages here, with six offers: the Key4Games account at €7.22 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.80 with fees), a European key at Gamivo for €13.81 with GCDKGamivo (€15.28 with fees) and the Microsoft Store at €19.99 (no fees).
The Escapists 2 is slower and sneakier. You have to answer roll call, turn up for your prison job and, in the spare time, craft tools out of whatever you can steal to get out. On console it supports split screen, and online play too. Very Positive, 90% of 26,545. The Difmark account costs €1.85 with Gocdkeys (€1.93 with fees). The European keys on sale are the Game of the Year Edition, from €4.42 at G2A with coupon GCKG2AC9Q3M (€4.71 with fees).
Turtles or Double Dragon: which beat 'em up for the sofa?
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, by Tribute Games, is the modern arcade brawler everyone remembers from the nineties, except that it plays better. Up to four on one console, six online. Very Positive, 94% of 13,006. The Difmark account costs €2.51 with Gocdkeys (€2.62 with fees); the cheapest European key is at Eneba for €8.60 with Gocdkeys10 (€9.88 with fees).
If you'd rather have the originals, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection brings together thirteen Konami Turtles games from arcades, NES, SNES, Mega Drive and Game Boy, Turtles in Time included, with rewind and save states. Digital Eclipse put it together. Its Steam sample is small, 87% of 794 reviews. The account at Key4Games costs €3.50 with GOCDKEYS15 (€3.91 with fees), and a European key at Gameseal is €8.72 with SEAL17CKD (€9.79 with fees).
Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons is a two-player brawler on one console, and it mixes in a bit of roguelite: you pick the order of the city's districts, swap between two fighters and choose upgrades between stages. Very Positive, 86% of 1,291. The cheap key here is American: Eneba sells a US key for €7.19 with Gocdkeys10 (€8.35 with fees), barely more than the Key4Games account at €6.49 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.03 with fees). The first European key, at HRKGame, is €14.32 with Gocdkeys12 (€16.67 with fees).
Four LEGO games: Batman, Marvel, DC villains and dinosaurs
TT Games' formula hasn't changed much over the years, and that's the point: one player can carry the other, nobody gets stuck for long and you can sit a child next to you. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is the newest and the best rated of the four, Overwhelmingly Positive at 95% of 9,055, and a second player can join on the same console. It also has the biggest gap in this guide between formats. The Key4Games account is €7.76 with GOCDKEYS15 (€8.36 with fees), but the cheapest key, a US one at Gamivo, costs €32.76 with GCDKGamivo (€34.90 with fees), and the first European key, at G2A, €36.97 with GCKG2AC9Q3M (€37.26 with fees). If you want it on your own account, set a price alert for LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight and we'll email you when it drops.
The other three are older and cost very little. LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 sends you through Chronopolis, a city stitched together from different Marvel eras by Kang the Conqueror; the story is for two and there's a battle mode for up to four. Very Positive, 86%. The account is €2.51 at Difmark with Gocdkeys (€2.62 with fees), the European key €4.47 at Driffle with GOCDKEYS10 (€5.03 with fees).
In LEGO DC Super-Villains you make your own villain and play alongside the Joker, Harley Quinn and Lex Luthor, for two players. Very Positive, 91%. Key4Games has the account for €1.65 with GOCDKEYS15 (€1.97 with fees); there were no European keys this morning, only a US one at Eneba for €4.85 with Gocdkeys10 (€5.81 with fees).
LEGO Jurassic World covers the first three Jurassic Park films and Jurassic World, and lets you play as the dinosaurs too. Two players. Very Positive, 92%. The account is €1.85 at Difmark with Gocdkeys (€1.93 with fees), and Gamivo has a European key for €3.60 with GCDKGamivo (€4.48 with fees).
Children of Morta and Cat Quest 3: two action RPGs for longer evenings
Children of Morta follows the Bergson family, guardians of a mountain being eaten by a corruption, through dungeons that change each run. Every relative fights differently and what one learns helps the others. A second player can join on the same console. Very Positive, 88% of 18,471. The Difmark account costs €3.76 with Gocdkeys (€3.93 with fees), and Kinguin has a European PC Key / Xbox Key for €6.75 with OCTGOC10 (€7.64 with fees), a long way below the Microsoft Store's €21.99 (no fees).
Cat Quest 3 moves The Gentlebros' series to a pirate sea: you sail between islands, fight from the ship and clear dungeons on foot, and a second player can join on the same screen. Very Positive, 94%. This is the case where the key costs most compared with the account: Difmark sells the account for €1.25 with Gocdkeys (€1.31 with fees), and the only key in stock, from the United States, is at Kinguin for €10.01 with OCTGOC10 (€11.16 with fees).
Which one to put on first, depending on who's on the sofa
For two adults who play regularly, Split Fiction, and if the price of the key puts you off, Cuphead for a fraction of it. With four people and a party atmosphere, Overcooked 2 or Unrailed. Shredder's Revenge is the easiest to hand to someone who hasn't touched a controller in years. With children, any of the LEGO games, and LEGO Jurassic World and DC Super-Villains cost less than two euros each as accounts. Sonic Mania is the one case where the key is nearly the same price as the account, so there's no reason not to take it.
