We chose these fifteen from the Xbox games in our catalogue that had a key or an official store offer this morning, so a great game with nothing on sale didn't make it. Beyond that, the choice is ours: games you can play slowly, without much pressure.

For each one we quote the cheapest key we found for Europe or Global, with the fees you'd really pay, and usually the Microsoft Store price next to it. On several of these the gap is over €10, and on a few the official store is the better deal, so it's worth reading both figures. Where we give a score, it's the Steam one, for the PC version, on a 0-10 scale, from our catalogue; if there's no score, we don't have one. Check the region of each key before paying, because it has to suit your account. A “PC / Xbox key” works on both. You'll also see cheaper accounts among the offers: that's someone else's account shared with you, it isn't yours and you can lose access, so we don't recommend them or quote them here.

Unpacking boxes and putting things straight

Unpacking has you taking belongings out of boxes and finding a place for them, through a series of house moves in one woman's life. Nobody says a word: you work out her story from what she keeps and what she leaves behind. It's short enough to finish over a weekend, and an accessibility option lets you put things wherever you like if the placement rules start to annoy you. Cdkeys has it at €7.19 (no fees), PC / Xbox key, Europe, a long way below the Microsoft Store's €19.99 (no fees), Xbox. Here's where to buy Unpacking key:

A Little to the Left is for anyone who straightens picture frames in other people's houses. Each puzzle asks you to sort, stack or arrange household objects, and many have more than one valid answer. A mischievous cat turns up to undo your work, and if you get stuck the game can give you a hint. It scores 9/10 from 10,259 reviews. HRKGame sells it at €5.02 with the coupon Gocdkeys12 (€5.76 with fees), PC / Xbox key, Europe; the Microsoft Store asks €14.99 (no fees), Xbox.

Running a small business

Sticky Business puts you in charge of a one-person sticker shop. You design the stickers, pack the orders by hand and tuck in little extras, while notes from your customers tell small stories of their own. Its 10/10 from 4,683 reviews is the top score in this guide, shared with Snufkin. The best key is Eneba's at €7.88 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€9.10 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, but the Microsoft Store is only just above that at €9.99 (no fees), Xbox, so buying direct is a fair choice.

Fruitbus is about getting your grandmother's food truck back on the road, and it comes from Krillbite Studio, the team behind the horror game Among the Sleep. You drive around, gather ingredients, cook and serve the locals, with no great hurry about any of it. It scores 9/10 from 982 reviews. HRKGame has it at €5.76 with the coupon Gocdkeys12 (€6.55 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, against €19.99 (no fees), Xbox, on the Microsoft Store.

Calico has you restoring a run-down cat café in a pastel town. You decorate it, bake, run errands for the neighbours and collect animals, cats above all, that you can stroke as often as you please. It's light and very undemanding, so it suits younger players too. We found no key below the official price, so go to the Microsoft Store at €11.99 (no fees), Xbox, Global.

Potion Permit sends you to the town of Moonbury as its new chemist, in a place that doesn't trust medicine. You diagnose patients, gather ingredients and brew the cure, with a dog at your side and a town to win over. Fishing and cooking fill the gaps between patients. It scores 7/10 from 2,582 reviews. HRKGame has it at €5.72 with the coupon Gocdkeys12 (€6.51 with fees), Xbox key, Europe; the Microsoft Store asks €19.99 (no fees), Xbox. These are the places to buy Potion Permit key:

Farms and ranches

Stardew Valley isn't here because it already has its place in our guide to the best farming games on Xbox. These three take the idea somewhere else.

Roots of Pacha moves the farm to the Stone Age. You help a prehistoric clan discover farming, tame animals and get to know your neighbours, and the clan moves forward through ideas you bring to it. Up to four people can play together, and you can fall in love with someone in the village if you fancy that side of farm life too. It scores 9/10 from 2,517 reviews. HRKGame sells it at €9.68 with the coupon Gocdkeys12 (€11.40 with fees), Xbox key; our data doesn't show the region of this one, so read the offer carefully.

STORY OF SEASONS: A Wonderful Life is the remake of the GameCube Harvest Moon game. It plays out over years, in chapters: you settle in the valley, marry and watch your child grow up. Farming matters less here than life passing by. It scores 7/10 from 1,203 reviews. Kinguin has it at €14.76 with the coupon OCTGOC10 (€16.28 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, less than half the €39.99 (no fees), Xbox, on the Microsoft Store. That's the dearest official price in this guide, so it's also the game where a key saves you the most.

Slime Rancher swaps cows for bouncing slimes. In first person, you suck them up with a vacuum gun, feed them, keep them in pens and sell what they produce, on an alien planet. It's a lively game, and the slimes do get out of control now and then, but the only real pressure is the one you put on yourself. Difmark Digital Keys has it at €4.22 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€4.41 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, and the Microsoft Store isn't far off at €6.58 (no fees), Xbox.

Small places with chores to do

Cozy Grove strands you on a haunted island as a camper who helps its ghostly bears move on. It runs on a real-time daily schedule: you get a few tasks a day, then the game asks you to come back tomorrow, and the washed-out island gains colour as you help. It suits twenty minutes a night and won't work if you want to binge it. The price to go for is the Microsoft Store's €14.99 (no fees), Xbox, Europe; the other keys we found are dearer or for the US.

Lake sends Meredith Weiss back to her small Oregon hometown in the eighties to cover for her father as the local postwoman for two weeks. You drive the mail van, deliver letters and chat to the neighbours, then decide what kind of life you want. Very little happens, which is what makes it restful. Gamivo has it at €15.32 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€16.85 with fees), Xbox key, Europe; the Microsoft Store charges €19.99 (no fees), Xbox.

Stories you can wander through

Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley gives you Tove Jansson's wandering musician and a valley spoiled by parks full of rules. You sneak around, pull up the signs that ban everything and play music for the creatures you meet. It's gentle enough to share with children, and its 10/10 from 1,875 reviews matches Sticky Business. Kinguin has it at €6.30 with the coupon OCTGOC10 (€7.15 with fees), PC / Xbox key, Global, far below the Microsoft Store's €19.99 (no fees), Xbox.

Beacon Pines looks like a children's picture book, with a narrator reading along, but the small town at its centre is hiding something unsettling. You play Luca, a young boy looking for answers with his friends. You collect words and use them at key moments to rewrite how the story goes, then return to earlier points to try another. It's the darkest game here, so bear that in mind if you've got a young audience. Kinguin sells it at €5.19 with the coupon OCTGOC10 (€5.95 with fees), PC / Xbox key, Europe, while the Microsoft Store asks €19.99 (no fees), Xbox.

Puzzles: folding paper and building as a pair

Paper Trail sets you to folding the world itself. Paige is leaving home for university, and each screen is a sheet of paper whose corners you bend to connect paths that don't touch, and the back of the page matters as much as the front. It gets harder without getting stressful. It scores 9/10 from 748 reviews. HRKGame has it at €4.22 with the coupon Gocdkeys12 (€4.91 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, about a quarter of the Microsoft Store's €19.49 (no fees), Xbox.

LEGO Voyagers comes from the makers of LEGO Builder's Journey and it's built for two: each of you controls a small brick, and you solve the puzzles by snapping together and helping each other across. You'll need a second player, online or on the same sofa. It scores 9/10 from 1,911 reviews and it's the dearest key in this guide: Eneba has it at €18.95 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€21.13 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, and the Microsoft Store at €24.99 (no fees), Xbox. If you also want it on PC, Gamivo's €20.23 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€21.93 with fees), PC / Xbox key, Europe, covers both.

Where we'd start

With only an evening to spare, take A Little to the Left or Unpacking. For something to return to night after night, Sticky Business has the best score of the management games and Cozy Grove is built for exactly that habit. If you're playing with someone else, LEGO Voyagers needs two of you and Roots of Pacha can take four. Snufkin is the one we'd give to anyone who wants a story rather than a to-do list.

On a tight budget, Slime Rancher at €4.22 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€4.41 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, and Paper Trail at €4.22 with the coupon Gocdkeys12 (€4.91 with fees), Xbox key, Europe, are the two cheapest here.

If a price seems high, you can set a price alert, which is handy for Lake, Calico and Cozy Grove, where the keys save you little or nothing. Prices checked on the morning of 31 October.
