A good detective game leaves the work to you: look closely, take notes, connect the pieces. Sometimes that means a ship full of corpses and a pocket watch, sometimes a Tokyo nightlife district and a lot of punching. We went through the games Steam tags as Detective, kept the ones that have an Xbox page on Gocdkeys with offers we'd trust this morning, and ended up with sixteen.

The player scores come from Steam, so they belong to the PC version of each game. Xbox doesn't publish a public rating we could use instead. The table gives two prices with fees: the cheapest account, and the cheapest key for the Europe region, which is the kind that redeems without trouble on a European Microsoft account. What each format gets you is explained right below it.

Account, European code or Microsoft Store: what you're paying for

Xbox pages on Gocdkeys mix several formats, and the price gap between them can be huge:

  • Account: you get the login to someone else's Microsoft account that already owns the game. You play signed in to it, nothing is added to your own account, and you depend on the seller not changing the password. It's the cheapest option for all sixteen games.
  • Xbox Key: a code you redeem on your own account, so the game is yours to keep. Region matters here. Europe and Global work on a European account; keys marked US or UK are meant for accounts from those countries. None of these sixteen has Argentine or Turkish keys today, and if you come across them elsewhere, they usually need a VPN. We'd stay away.
  • PC Key / Xbox Key: same thing, except the code unlocks the game on Xbox and on a Windows PC.
  • Xbox Series Key: a code for the Series X|S version. That's how Call of Cthulhu is sold.

Then there's the Microsoft Store, the official route: you pay its price with no fees and the game lands on your account. It's rarely the cheapest, but with Pentiment and The Precinct it gets very close.

Deduction with nothing in the way

In Lucas Pope's Return of the Obra Dinn, a merchant ship long given up for lost drifts back into port with no one left alive. You're the insurance inspector sent to work out what happened to each of the sixty people on the crew list, and you have a pocket watch that shows you the exact moment of every death. It's all drawn in one-bit black and white, like something from the first Macintosh computers. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, 96% of 32,495 reviews.

It's also the cheapest game here: a Key4Games account at €2.09 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€2.43 with fees). Owning it costs a lot more. The Microsoft Store sells the Xbox Key for €19.99 (no fees), and this morning no store had a European key under €16 with fees.

The Rise of the Golden Idol turns deduction into a fill-in-the-blanks exercise. Each case is a frozen scene: you click around, collect names, objects and actions, and slot them into a written account of what happened until it holds together. This one moves the series to the seventies. Very Positive, 92% of 3,810. Accounts start at €5.05 with GOCDKEYS15 (€5.53 with fees) at Key4Games. The cheapest European Xbox Key is Gamivo's, €13.90 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€15.38 with fees), and the Microsoft Store asks €19.49 (no fees).

Shadows of Doubt has no hand-written cases at all. ColePowered Games generates an entire city, with its residents, offices and daily routines, and the crimes happen inside it. You break into flats, lift fingerprints, check call logs and decide for yourself when you have enough to accuse someone. Nothing else on this list gives you that much freedom. Very Positive, 82% of 14,696. Gamivo's European Xbox Key costs €9.20 with GCDKGamivo (€10.51 with fees), less than €3 above the cheapest account (€7.22 with GOCDKEYS15, €7.80 with fees). For that difference we'd take the key.

Capcom: a ghost and two Ace Attorney collections

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is by Shu Takumi, who created Ace Attorney, and it has the best score in this guide: Overwhelmingly Positive, 97% of 6,498. You're Sissel, a man who wakes up dead, with no memory and one night to find out who killed him. As a ghost you can jump between objects and move them, and when you find a body you can go back to four minutes before the death and try to stop it.

It's one of the easiest calls on price, too. Cdkeys Com sells the European Xbox Key for €8.69 (no fees), only €3.43 more than Difmark's account at €5.03 with coupon Gocdkeys (€5.26 with fees). The page to buy Ghost Trick Phantom Detective key compares every store.

Ace Attorney Investigations Collection switches sides. The lead is Miles Edgeworth, the prosecutor who keeps losing to Phoenix Wright, and most of the work happens at the crime scene rather than in court. The collection has both Investigations games; the second had never been officially released in the West before. Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% of 3,445.

Here the account and the key are miles apart. The cheapest account is €6.49 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.03 with fees) at Key4Games. The cheapest European key is a PC Key / Xbox Key at HRKGame, €30.16 with coupon Gocdkeys12 (€32.62 with fees), and the Microsoft Store wants €39.99 (no fees). If you'd like it on your own account but not at that price, set a price alert for Ace Attorney Investigations Collection and we'll email you when it drops.

Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy bundles the fourth, fifth and sixth Ace Attorney games, with Apollo Justice as the rookie defence lawyer and Phoenix Wright back for the last two. The routine is the familiar one: investigate, then pick witness testimony apart in front of the judge. Very Positive, 88% of 3,285. Accounts start at €10.63 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.36 with fees). A European key costs more than three times that (Instant Gaming has it at €38.69, no fees), and the Microsoft Store charges €49.99 (no fees).

On the street: Yagami in Kamurocho and a rookie on patrol

Judgment comes from RGG Studio, the Yakuza team, and it shows. Takayuki Yagami was a lawyer until a client he got acquitted killed again. Now he takes private cases in Kamurocho, tails suspects, snaps photos as evidence and settles plenty of arguments with his fists. Very Positive, 93% of 9,466.

What you pay depends hugely on where you buy. The Microsoft Store charges €39.99 (no fees), while Gamivo's European Xbox Key is €6.90 with GCDKGamivo (€8.13 with fees) and Cdkeys Com has one at €8.79 (no fees). The Key4Games account comes in at €4.50 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.95 with fees). These are the five cheapest offers right now if you want to buy Judgment key:

And what customers say about those stores on Trustpilot:

  • Cdkeys Com — 4.8 / 5 over 224,000+ reviews.
  • Kinguin — 4.6 / 5 over 120,000+ reviews.
  • Eneba — 4.4 / 5 over 312,000+ reviews.
  • Driffle — 4.4 / 5 over 9,000+ reviews.
  • K4G — 4.3 / 5 over 17,000+ reviews.

In Lost Judgment, Yagami is back on a case tied to bullying at a Yokohama high school. Same studio, same score: Very Positive, 93% of 7,508. Its official price is the highest on this list, €59.99 (no fees) at the Microsoft Store, which is why the European Xbox Key from Cdkeys Com at €10.49 (no fees) looks so good. The cheapest account is €3.60 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.01 with fees).

The Precinct, by Fallen Tree Games, puts you in a rookie's uniform in Averno City, a made-up American city in the eighties. You see it from above: patrols, car chases, arrests done by the book. Very Positive, 87% of 7,933. This is one where the official store deserves a look. The Microsoft Store asks €17.99 (no fees), and the cheapest European key from a reseller is a PC Key / Xbox Key at €14.99 with coupon GCKG2AT6V1P (€15.28 with fees). For €2.71 more you're buying straight from Microsoft. Accounts start at €7.22 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.80 with fees).

Noir, a comic book and a sixteenth-century manuscript

Nobody Wants to Die, from Polish studio Critical Hit Games, is set in a future New York where people can move their minds into new bodies, so dying is optional for anyone who can pay. Detective James Karra investigates a murder with a device that lets him rewind the crime scene. Very Positive, 83% of 5,886. It's a short game and it costs next to nothing: Gamivo's European Xbox Key is €4.59 with GCDKGamivo (€5.50 with fees), against €24.99 (no fees) at the Microsoft Store.

Blacksad: Under the Skin is based on the Spanish comic by Juan Díaz Canales and Juanjo Guarnido, and Pendulo Studios made it in Madrid. John Blacksad, a black cat working as a private eye in fifties New York, looks into the death of a boxing club owner and the disappearance of his star fighter. Choices you make along the way change how it ends. Very Positive, 83% of 5,374. An account costs €2.60 with GOCDKEYS15 (€2.97 with fees); Gamivo's European Xbox Key is €6.93 with GCDKGamivo (€8.16 with fees).

Obsidian's Pentiment looks like nothing else here, and it's one of the best rated: Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 9,286. You play Andreas Maler, an artist working at an abbey in sixteenth-century Bavaria. When a nobleman is murdered, you have a few days to accuse someone, and the game never tells you whether you got it right. It also has the lowest Microsoft Store price of the sixteen, €9.99 (no fees), barely above Gamivo's European Xbox Key at €7.05 with GCDKGamivo (€8.29 with fees). An account costs €4.33 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.78 with fees).

Poirot, Holmes and things from Lovecraft

Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express is Microids' take on the novel. The train gets stuck in the snow, a passenger is found dead, and Hercule Poirot has to question every other passenger. Very Positive, 82% of 1,090. Accounts start at €4.33 with GOCDKEYS15 (€4.78 with fees) and Gamivo's European Xbox Key costs €7.05 with GCDKGamivo (€8.29 with fees).

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is Frogwares' remake of one of its own older games. A young Holmes and Watson start out looking for a missing servant and end up on the trail of a cult straight out of Lovecraft. Very Positive, 81% of 2,634. The Microsoft Store's €39.99 (no fees) makes little sense next to Gamivo's European Xbox Key at €7.70 with GCDKGamivo (€8.96 with fees), or Difmark's account at €2.94 with coupon Gocdkeys (€3.07 with fees).

Cyanide's Call of Cthulhu has the weakest score in the guide: Mostly Positive, 78% of 11,013. You play Edward Pierce, a private investigator sent to Darkwater, an island off Boston, to look into a family's death, and the deeper you dig, the shakier your grip on reality. On Xbox it's sold as an Xbox Series Key, €10.34 (no fees) at the Microsoft Store. Difmark's account costs €2.51 with coupon Gocdkeys (€2.62 with fees).

Phasmophobia is the odd one out, because the case is a haunting. One to four players walk into a building with thermometers, EMF readers and a spirit box, gather evidence and work out what kind of ghost they're dealing with before it gets to them. It has more Steam reviews than the other fifteen put together: Very Positive, 94% of 685,247. Accounts start at €2.88 with GOCDKEYS15 (€3.26 with fees). The cheapest European Xbox Key is Gamivo's, €13.94 with GCDKGamivo (€15.42 with fees).

If you're only buying one

For a copy on your own account, Ghost Trick (European Xbox Key, €8.69) and Lost Judgment (€10.49), both at Cdkeys Com with no fees, are the two we'd buy without thinking twice. Pentiment is easiest straight from the Microsoft Store at €9.99 (no fees). And if what you want is deduction in its purest form, Return of the Obra Dinn costs €19.99 (no fees) as an Xbox Key at the Microsoft Store, or €2.43 with fees as an account. Only you can say whether owning it is worth the difference.

Prices checked on the morning of 11 October.
