Our catalogue has 84 Xbox One and Series product pages carrying Steam's Medieval tag with at least one live offer today. We picked 19 of them, from muddy historical RPGs and strategy classics to village builders and a few fantasy games that qualify on swords and castles alone.
A word on prices before the list. On every game here, the cheapest offer is a shared account, meaning you sign in to somebody else's Xbox account that already owns the game. It never ends up on your own profile, and you can lose access to it. So for each game we also give the cheapest Xbox key, which you redeem on your own account and keep. That's what we recommend buying.
Where we say PC/Xbox key, it works on both platforms. Prices were checked on the morning of 11 September and are what you pay including each store's payment fees; when a store charges none, we say so. The Steam verdicts come from the PC version on Steam, since Steam doesn't collect console reviews.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance I and II
If medieval to you means mud, plate armour and no dragons, start here.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a first-person RPG set in medieval Bohemia, where you play Henry, a blacksmith's son who can barely hold a sword when the story begins. The opening hours are famously unforgiving and the combat takes real practice. Steam rates it Very Positive, with 118,777 of 143,105 reviews in its favour. A shared account costs €1.81 with fees at Difmark. The cheapest Xbox key is €4.50 at Eneba, and Gamivo sells the Royal Edition Xbox key for €6.16.
Henry's story carries on in Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, with more of Bohemia to explore and the same first-person swordplay. It sits at Very Positive on Steam (134,027 of 144,115) and has more offers than any other game in this guide: 58, spread across 14 stores. Difmark's shared account is €7.27. For a copy of your own, K4G has the Xbox key at €23.53 and Gamivo at €24.93, while the Gold Edition Xbox key is €29.00 at Gamivo.

Story-driven adventures: A Plague Tale and Pentiment
Asobo's A Plague Tale: Innocence follows Amicia and her little brother Hugo through plague-ridden France, on the run from the Inquisition and from swarms of rats that only light keeps at bay. Most of it is stealth, with a sling as your main tool. Very Positive on Steam: 58,338 of 62,729. Shared account: €2.78 at Difmark. Xbox key: €6.16 at Gamivo, or €6.58 at Gameboost.
The second game, A Plague Tale: Requiem, takes the siblings south, gives Amicia more ways to fight back and throws far bigger rat swarms at them. Steam users rate it Very Positive (18,560 of 20,622). The two formats are far apart here: €2.16 for the account at Difmark against €13.82 for the Xbox key at Gamivo.
There is no combat at all in Pentiment. Obsidian's adventure casts you as Andreas, a journeyman artist drawn into a murder case in a Bavarian abbey town, and it looks like an illuminated manuscript brought to life. Everything hangs on conversations and choices. It's one of only two games in this guide rated Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam (8,756 of 9,217). Difmark has the account at €5.45 and Gamivo the Xbox key at €8.64.
Strategy and tactics, from Age of Empires to Final Fantasy
For a lot of players, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is simply what a medieval strategy game looks like. You put villagers to work on food, wood, gold and stone while climbing through the ages, and the campaigns follow figures such as Joan of Arc and Saladin. No game here has more Steam reviews: Very Positive, 149,254 of 158,781. The shared account is €5.72 at Difmark. Gamivo sells the Definitive Edition Xbox key for €7.98.
Ancestors Legacy spends less time on base building than Age of Empires and more on the fighting itself. You command squads instead of single soldiers, and the factions include Vikings, Anglo-Saxons, Germans and Slavs. Very Positive (4,632 of 5,790). The key costs barely more than the account: €7.16 for the Xbox key at Kinguin against €5.37 for Difmark's account.
Arthurian legend turns grim in King Arthur: Knight's Tale, a turn-based tactics game where you play Mordred, brought back to Avalon to kill Arthur. Between missions you rebuild Camelot and look after your knights. Steam: Very Positive, 5,570 of 6,711. The account at Difmark costs €8.36; the Xbox key at Gamivo is €33.89, four times as much.
The tactics classic returns in Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, grid battles and job system included, with a war story told through Ramza and Delita. It's Very Positive on Steam (5,029 of 5,651), and proportionally the account saves you less here than on any other game in the list. Difmark asks €26.58, just €1.87 under G2A's Xbox key at €28.45. Gamivo sells the Deluxe Xbox key at €34.03.
Building a village or defending a kingdom
You ride back and forth as a monarch in Kingdom Two Crowns, dropping coins to recruit villagers and pay for defences, then hoping the walls hold when the Greed attack at night. A second player can join you in co-op. Very Positive on Steam (28,094 of 31,215). Difmark sells the account for €3.63; the Xbox key is €5.57 at Eneba.
Bellwright starts you off with next to nothing. It's a survival game that grows into settlement building, as your village fills up with recruits who work and fight for you, and the long-term goal is a rebellion. Very Positive, 16,056 of 20,070. The account is €9.09 at Difmark. The cheapest key is G2A's PC/Xbox key at €23.05, and Microsoft Store charges €29.99 with no fees for the Xbox Series version.
Swap Europe for feudal Japan and you get Sengoku Dynasty, a first-person survival and village-building game. Mostly Positive on Steam (4,866 of 6,575). The account costs €11.82 at Difmark. The cheapest key is a PC/Xbox one at CDKeys for €22.39 with no fees, a whisker below the Xbox key at Instant Gaming for €22.63.
Then there's Graveyard Keeper, a management game with a pitch-black sense of humour. You look after a medieval village's cemetery, craft and farm on the side, and aren't too fussy about what happens to the bodies. Very Positive, 33,963 of 39,492. The gap between formats is huge: Kinguin's account is €1.56, while the Xbox key costs about ten times that: €15.93 at Gamivo.
Open-world fantasy RPGs
Pawns are what set Dragon's Dogma 2 apart: AI companions who travel and fight alongside you in Capcom's open world, where you can also climb onto huge monsters to hit their weak spots. Steam reviews are Mixed (47,408 of 76,464), worth knowing before you spend this much. The shared account is €13.64 at Difmark. Eneba has the Xbox key at €22.78, and G2A sells the Deluxe Xbox key at €49.20.
If you want a key, Gothic 1 Remake is the most expensive game in this guide. It's the new version of the German cult RPG: you're a nameless prisoner thrown into a mining colony sealed off by a magic barrier, and surviving means joining one of its camps. Very Positive on Steam (22,979 of 26,112). GamesPSN sells the account for €24.23 with no fees. The Xbox key roughly doubles that, at €47.73 from Eneba.
Tolkien fans get orc politics in Middle-earth: Shadow of War. As Talion you bend orc captains to your will through the Nemesis system, which remembers who beat whom, and lead them against enemy fortresses. Very Positive, 77,147 of 87,667. The standard game is cheap either way: €2.69 for the account at Difmark, €7.92 for the Xbox key at Gamivo. The Definitive Edition Xbox key at Green Man Gaming is €49.99 with no fees, more than six times that.
Soulslikes and demanding combat
Lords of the Fallen, the reboot, is a soulslike with a lamp that lets you peer into the realm of the dead and cross over into it. Its Steam reviews are Mixed (25,728 of 37,835). At Difmark the account is €3.27. The Xbox key is €9.09 at Gamivo, and Kinguin sells the Deluxe Xbox key for €16.34.
Faster and built around parrying, Thymesia casts you as Corvus in a plague-ridden kingdom, fighting with a sabre and with claws that steal your enemies' plague weapons. Very Positive on Steam (6,767 of 8,252). Kinguin has the account at €2.50 and Eneba the Xbox key at €6.23. Microsoft Store itself asks €7.49 with no fees, only €1.26 more than that key, so buying from the official store costs very little extra here.
ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist makes the list on a technicality. It's a 2D metroidvania with a dark fantasy setting, the follow-up to Ender Lilies, and the medieval tag fits it loosely. Along with Pentiment, it's the only game in this guide rated Overwhelmingly Positive, with 16,254 of 17,109 reviews. The account is just €1.09 at Difmark, while Gamivo and Kinguin both sell the Xbox key for €19.18: proportionally the widest gap in the list.
