Steam hands out its Space tag to almost anything with stars in the background, from trucking sims to old arcade shooters. We started from the games that carry it and also have an Xbox page on Gocdkeys, dropped expansions, badly reviewed games and pages with just a couple of odd offers, and kept sixteen that anyone would call space games: exploring planets, building ships and stations, fighting on alien ground or trying to survive aboard something that has gone very wrong.
Review scores come from Steam, so they belong to the PC version of each game. Microsoft doesn't publish player ratings for Xbox that we could use instead. Each table gives two prices with fees: the cheapest account and the cheapest code for the European region. The difference between the two is explained right below. If you pay for Game Pass, look through its catalogue before buying anything here, because it changes constantly and we haven't checked it game by game.
Account, European code or Play Anywhere: what you're paying for
Xbox pages on Gocdkeys mix several kinds of offer, and for some of these games the jump from one to the next is twenty or thirty euros.
- Account: the seller gives you the login for a Microsoft account that already owns the game. You play signed in to that account, nothing is added to yours, and if the seller changes the password one day, you lose access. It's the cheapest offer for all sixteen games.
- Xbox Key: a code you redeem on your own account, so the game stays with you. Watch the region: Europe and Global work on a European account. Nearly every page here also lists US and UK codes, which are meant for accounts from those countries.
- PC Key / Xbox Key: one code that unlocks the game on Xbox and on a Windows PC through Xbox Play Anywhere. No Man's Sky, Deep Rock Galactic and Starfield are among the games sold this way.
- Deluxe, Gold and other editions: the same game with extra content. Space Marine 2 and Deep Rock Galactic have several, and none of them is cheaper than the standard version.
The Microsoft Store also appears on most of these pages, at its official price and without fees. It isn't the cheapest option for any of the sixteen, but there's no question about region or seller.
Exploring, flying and building
No Man's Sky is usually the first name that comes up, and for good reason. Hello Games built a universe of procedurally generated planets that you fly between and land on without a loading screen, and it has kept adding free updates ever since: bases, freighters, your own fleet, multiplayer. It doesn't tell you where to go, so the first hour can feel empty. A few sessions later you notice you've spent an entire evening naming the animals on one planet. On Xbox you can play with friends on PC and PlayStation.
Starfield takes the opposite route. Bethesda's role-playing game sends you out with Constellation, the last group of space explorers, offers more than a thousand planets to land on and has a ship builder you can lose whole evenings to, plus the long questlines the studio is known for. Travel between planets happens through menus and loading screens, though, and many worlds repeat the same structures, which goes a long way towards explaining its Mixed verdict on Steam: 58% of 115,422 reviews. On Xbox it's one of Microsoft's own games.
Elite Dangerous is for people who want to fly by hand. Frontier recreated the Milky Way at full scale, and most of the game is piloting: docking manually in a spinning station, trading between systems, mining, hunting bounties or setting off for weeks towards the centre of the galaxy. One thing to know before you buy: the Odyssey expansion, which lets you walk on planets, never came to consoles, and the Xbox version stopped getting new content some time ago.
Space Engineers, by Keen Software House, is engineering with real physics. Ships, rovers and stations are built block by block, and every block has mass, so a badly balanced ship flies badly and a collision rips parts off. In survival mode you also mine the ore and keep the oxygen and power going. It suits tinkerers better than anyone looking for a story.
In Kerbal Space Program you run the space programme of the Kerbals, small green creatures with more enthusiasm than common sense. You design the rocket, decide how many stages it needs and plan the orbits yourself, and the physics forgive nothing, so the first launches usually end in fireworks. It's the best rated of the six: Overwhelmingly Positive, 95% of 121,431. On console it's the Enhanced Edition, reworked for a controller.
Astroneer is the gentlest way into all of this. System Era's game has hardly any combat: you land on a colourful planet, reshape the ground with a terrain tool, carry resources back to base and build your way to the next moon. Oxygen reaches you through tethers you lay out from the base, so every trip is a question of distance. Up to four people can play together.

Shooting, with company
Deep Rock Galactic stretches the definition a little, since you spend the whole game underground on one planet, Hoxxes IV. You get there by drop pod from a station orbiting overhead, though, so we're keeping it. Up to four dwarves, each with a class, go down into fully destructible caves to dig out minerals while swarms of insect-like creatures come at them from every wall. It has the best score in this guide: Overwhelmingly Positive, 97% of 303,846 reviews.
The price helps, too. Difmark sells an account for €0.83 with coupon Gocdkeys (€0.87 with fees), but at these prices we'd take a code of our own: Gamivo's European Xbox Key costs €6.14 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€7.34 with fees). These are the five cheapest offers this morning if you want to buy Deep Rock Galactic key:
And here is what customers say about those stores on Trustpilot:
- Cdkeys Com — 4.8 / 5 over 224,000+ reviews.
- Instant Gaming — 4.7 / 5 over 833,000+ reviews.
- Kinguin — 4.6 / 5 over 120,000+ reviews.
- Gameboost — 4.4 / 5 over 15,000+ reviews.
- Driffle — 4.4 / 5 over 9,000+ reviews.
Helldivers 2 is the priciest game in this group and the one with the most Steam reviews, 841,577 of them, Mostly Positive at 76%. Arrowhead takes the propaganda of films like Starship Troopers and turns it into a four-player shooter. You're a soldier for Super Earth, dropped onto planets crawling with bugs or robots, and everything you call down from orbit, from ammo crates to an airstrike, is ordered with a short sequence of directions. Now and then it lands on your own squad. It came to Xbox long after PlayStation and PC, and plays online with both.
Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, from Saber Interactive, is a third-person shooter set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. You're Titus, an Ultramarine in power armour, facing Tyranid swarms that pour over the walls by the hundred, and the fighting switches constantly between bolter and chainsword. Three people can play the campaign together, and there's a co-op Operations mode and PvP on top.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime is the odd one out: a 2D game by Asteroid Base, made for sharing a sofa. One to four players crew a single round ship and run between its stations. One steers, another works the shield, the rest take the turrets, and nobody can cover everything at once, which is where the shouting starts. You can play alone with an AI companion, but it was built for couples and friends. Very Positive, 93%.

Space stations where something has gone very wrong
Dead Space is Motive's remake of the first game in the series. Isaac Clarke, a ship engineer, boards the USG Ishimura, a mining ship that cracks open whole planets and has gone silent, and finds the crew turned into Necromorphs. Headshots barely slow them down; you have to cut their limbs off, mostly with tools that were made for mining. Very Positive, 90% of 63,597.
Arkane's Prey is set on Talos I, a research station orbiting the Moon and overrun by the Typhon, alien creatures that can take the shape of any object in the room. The mug on that desk may well jump at you. As Morgan Yu you install neuromods to gain new powers and use the GLOO Cannon both to stick enemies in place and to build your own way up to places you shouldn't reach. It's also one of the cheapest to own: Cdkeys Com sells the European Xbox Key for €5.69 (no fees).
System Shock is Nightdive's remake of the nineties classic that immersive sims like Prey descend from. You're a hacker who wakes up on Citadel Station after surgery and finds SHODAN, the station's artificial intelligence, has turned against the crew and has bigger plans still. The structure of the original survives intact: interconnected decks, very little guidance and an inventory to juggle. Very Positive, 90%.

Three stories a long way from Earth
In The Alters, from 11 bit studios (This War of Mine, Frostpunk), Jan Dolski is stranded alone on a planet where sunrise kills anything in the open. To survive he creates alters, versions of himself who made different choices at key moments of his life, and puts the scientist, the miner and the technician to live together in a wheel-shaped base that has to keep rolling ahead of the sun. Running the base is half the game. The other half is conversations in which every Jan has his own reasons to resent the rest. Very Positive, 90% of 15,484.
The Invincible, by Starward Industries, adapts a novel by Stanisław Lem. Yasna, a scientist, comes to on the planet Regis III without remembering how she got there and sets out to find the rest of her crew. It's a first-person adventure with no combat, built on exploring, talking over the radio and making decisions, with a retro-futuristic look full of chunky machines and analogue gadgets. Very Positive, 87%.
Pragmata is Capcom's new science-fiction game and the most recent on this list. Hugh, an astronaut, and Diana, an android girl, try to make their way home from a research station on the Moon overrun by hostile machines. Diana hacks the robots while Hugh shoots, so every fight mixes aiming with a small grid puzzle. Steam players have loved it: Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% of 33,771.
It's also where the two formats are furthest apart. Key4Games sells the account for €9.34 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€10.01 with fees), while the cheapest European Xbox Key, from Gamivo, is €40.42 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€42.82 with fees). If you'd rather have it on your own account but not at that price, set a price alert for Pragmata and we'll email you when it drops.

Where to start
If this is new territory, Astroneer is the friendliest of the sixteen and one of the cheapest as a European code; No Man's Sky asks for more patience and gives back a lot more. For nights with friends, Deep Rock Galactic is hard to beat at that price, and Helldivers 2 is the one to pick if your group wants something louder. Dead Space and Prey are both set on stations full of monsters, but the first is about tension and ammunition, while the second rewards poking around every corner. And Kerbal Space Program is for anyone who enjoys failing until they work out why.
