Welcome to Elderfield went on sale for PC on September 10. Two days on, 20 live offers are spread across 12 stores, which is plenty of noise for a game hardly anybody has finished yet. Look at the four cheapest and none of them sells you the game.
Chris Cote built it and Kwalee publishes it. The pitch is a cozy farming game with Lovecraftian horror underneath: you plant, you look after the village, and something below the village is not right. We took the prices below off the comparison at 05:42 UTC on September 12.
A farming village with something wrong underneath it
On the surface it is the familiar routine: crops, chores, neighbours. The horror sits underneath, working on the same loop rather than waiting in a mode of its own. Beyond that we will not describe content we have not seen. The game is two days old.
Who it is for: people who finish farming sims and come away feeling they were a bit too safe.
362 positive reviews out of 381 is a good start, not a verdict
Steam currently reads Very Positive: 362 in favour, 19 against. Excellent ratio, tiny sample. Those 381 people are mostly the ones who had it wishlisted and bought on day one, and a launch week flatters almost every small game. Give it a month before you treat that badge as settled.
The four cheapest offers are shared accounts
Sort by what actually leaves your bank and the bottom of the list is all Steam Account:
- Difmark: €8.39 base, €8.77 with payment fees, coupon Gocdkeys. Without the coupon the store asks €9.99.
- Gameseal: €9.12 base, €10.21 with fees, coupon SEAL17CKD.
- Kinguin: €9.49 base, €10.59 with fees, coupon SEPGOC10.
- Driffle: €10.25 base, €11.02 with fees, coupon GOCDKEYS10.
What you get there is a login. Somebody else owns the copy, you play on their Steam account, the hours and the achievements pile up on their profile, and the day they change the password you are out. Against a real activation code the saving is around €4. For that money we would rather own the thing.
€12.99 at Instant Gaming and CDKeys, with nothing added at checkout
The cheapest real Steam Key is €12.99, and two stores are level there: Instant Gaming and CDKeys.com. Neither charges a payment fee, so €12.99 is the figure your card is billed. Steam wants €16.19, also fee-free, which makes the saving €3.20. Both stores sit at the top of our buy Welcome to Elderfield key page.
Past €13.59 you pay more and get less
YUPLAY comes next at €13.59 for a Steam Key with nothing added, which is still a sound buy. After that it thins out fast. Eneba advertises €12.49 and then puts €1.62 on at the till, so even with the Gocdkeys10 coupon you finish at €14.11, above the two cheapest stores. Allyouplay is €15.49 flat, under Steam by a hair. And G2A will sell you a Steam Account for €13.59 with fees, a login priced above a proper code.
The three Steam Gift offers land between €20.61 and €22.86 with fees, every one of them above what Steam charges. Then there is K4G, asking €99 for a Steam Account, or €85.14 with the GCDK14DEAL coupon and €92.78 once fees are in. One game, one page, and the dearest offer costs more than ten times the cheapest.
23 days of history cannot tell you to wait
Our series starts on August 20, when the game was still a pre-order, so we hold 23 days of data and only two of them with it actually on sale. On exactly one of those 23 days has it been cheaper than it is today. The low we have on file is €10.54, set yesterday, and it was an account rather than a code. Those history figures leave payment fees out and mix formats together, so do not line them up against the €12.99 above.
There is no median worth quoting yet, and three weeks do not add up to a usual price. If you can hold off, put a price alert on it and let the first proper discount find you. If you want to play it this weekend, €12.99 with nothing added at checkout is a fair way in: buy Welcome to Elderfield key, and leave the accounts where they are.
