Amanita Design announced Machinarium 2 on 8 October, roughly 17 years after the hand-drawn puzzle adventure it follows. It is confirmed for PC and macOS on Steam and GOG. There is no release date yet, and other platforms will be announced later. You can already add it to your Steam wishlist.
To go with the announcement, Amanita has temporarily dropped the original Machinarium to €3.99 (no fees) on Steam, with no word on when the discount ends. If you never played it, the obvious question is whether to grab it now or hold off.
What we know about Machinarium 2
The story picks up exactly where the first game left off. Josef and Berta crash in an area called the Barrens and find a valley with two robot settlements, both without power: the monastery of Elektrona, high up, and the underground city of Oilton.
The big change is that you control both robots and can switch between them instantly, combining their abilities to solve puzzles. Amanita recommends a controller, since there is no on-screen cursor, but you can still play with a mouse. As always, there is no written text. Characters get their point across with animated speech bubbles and gestures. Animator Václav Blín, background artist Adolf Lachman and composer Tomáš Dvořák (Floex) are all back.
Steam is the cheapest option this morning
Once payment fees are added, no reseller gets below Steam's €3.99. These are the closest offers:
| Store | Format | With coupon | With fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gameseal | Steam Gift | €3.53 (SEAL17CKD) | €4.20 |
| Instant Gaming | Steam Key | €4.39 | €4.39 (no fees) |
| Gamivo | Steam Key | €3.53 (GCDKGamivo) | €4.40 |
| Kinguin | Steam Key | €3.94 (OCTGOC10) | €4.60 |
The Gameseal offer is a Steam Gift: the seller sends the game to your Steam account as a gift, rather than giving you a code to redeem yourself. Even so, it works out 21 cents dearer than Steam. Instant Gaming sells the Steam Key for €4.39 (no fees), and Gamivo's Steam Key is €3.53 with code GCDKGamivo, which turns into €4.40 with fees at checkout.
There is also a Collector's Edition on sale. The cheapest is on Gamivo, a Steam Key for €4.11 with GCDKGamivo (€5.00 with fees).

€3.99 is a good price, but not a record
In our price history for the Machinarium key, the median is €3.58 and the low is €2.21, recorded at the end of July last year. Both figures leave out fees and coupons, so buying at those prices would have cost a bit more at checkout. Still, that low sits well below what Steam is asking today.
Should you buy it now or wait?
If you want to play the original before Machinarium 2 comes out, buy it now on Steam. Nothing is cheaper today, and chasing a key would only cost you more. If you are in no hurry, there is time: the sequel does not even have a date. Set a price alert and we will email you if the key gets back down towards €2.21.
On Steam, 16,775 of 17,658 reviews recommend Machinarium, which earns it an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating, and its critic score on Metacritic is 85.
Every store and format, fees included, is on the page to buy Machinarium key.
