Nihon Falcom's Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter came out on 17 September on PC, PS5 and Switch 2, carrying the highest Metacritic score of any new release this year so far. A day before launch, a deals site was already announcing discounts of up to 42% at key shops.
We read our own prices on the morning of the 19th. On PC, the cheapest copy you actually own sits 35% below what Steam charges. On PS5 nothing comes close to that, and the cheapest offer there comes with a catch. Below is what each version costs and what you get for the money.
A remake that picks up where 1st Chapter stops
This is Falcom's rebuild of Second Chapter, a PSP role-playing game whose original is about twenty years old. On PS5 it is published by GungHo.
The story does not start over. It carries on directly from the ending of the 1st Chapter remake, so if you skipped that one, play it first: 2nd Chapter assumes you already know the cast and how the first game finished.
There is a free demo, and it opens the moment 1st Chapter ends, which makes it a handy test on whichever machine you plan to use. One thing we have seen no confirmation of is whether 1st Chapter saves carry over, so do not buy counting on it.
93 on PC, 92 on PS5
At launch, Metacritic had the PC version on 93 from 10 reviews and the PS5 version on 92 from 13. Switch 2 sits lower at 84, with fewer reviews in, and the OpenCritic average is 91.
Players on Steam are in the same mood: "Very Positive", with 96% of 351 reviews in favour. Ten or thirteen critics is a small sample, but a single point between PC and PS5 means quality is not what should pick your platform. Price and format should.
PC: €35.25 with fees for a copy that stays in your library
Five live offers on the PC page this morning, two of them identical:
- Eneba: €31.95 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€35.25 with fees), Steam Key, Europe region. Listed twice at the same price.
- Driffle: €36.51 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€38.23 with fees), Steam Key, Global.
- Steam: €53.99 (no fees), Steam Key.
- G2A: €63.87 (€64.16 with fees), Steam Gift.
Against Steam's own €53.99, the Eneba key saves you €18.74 once fees are counted, or 35%. That falls short of the 42% in the launch-eve headlines, but it is the figure that actually leaves your card.
The Europe tag puts some people off for no good reason. It means the key is meant for European accounts: if your Steam account was set up in Europe, it activates like any other. If you live elsewhere, Driffle's Global key is the safe pick at €38.23 with fees, €2.98 more.
G2A is the odd one out. It sells a Steam Gift, which reaches you as a present you accept inside Steam, and at €64.16 with fees it costs more than buying straight from Valve. We would leave it where it is.
With the game out for two days, there is no price history yet that says anything about where it will settle. When you are ready, you can buy Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter key from the page that holds every offer above.
PS5: the cheapest offer is not a copy of your own

The Difmark offer is an Account. You get the login to a shared PSN account where the game sits, not a licence on your own account. It is cheaper, and the game is never really yours. We recommend a copy you own, but the call is yours.
Leave the Account out and the PS5 floor becomes Fnac's physical copy at €54.99, with Media Markt a euro above it. A boxed copy has one thing no download does: once the credits roll, you can sell it on. For a long story-driven RPG you are unlikely to replay next month, that resale value is worth something.
The PlayStation Store is the priciest route at €59.99. During pre-orders our records had the PS5 version at €49.99 (shop price, no fees), so launch added ten euros. If you would rather wait for it to drop back, set a price alert on the PS5 page.
Which version we would buy
If you have no platform preference, PC wins on money: €35.25 with fees for a Steam key against €54.99 for the cheapest PS5 copy you own. That is €19.74 apart for a game the critics rate almost identically.
PS5 makes sense if you played 1st Chapter on PlayStation and want the whole story on one console, or if you like the idea of reselling the game when you are done. In that case, go for the Fnac physical copy.
