The Epic Games Store is giving away System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster next week. It goes free on 1 October at 17:00 CEST (15:00 UTC) and stays free until 8 October at the same time. Epic's own promotions data confirms the dates, and the game arrives alongside another freebie, Buried Stars. Outside the promotion it costs €26.99 on Epic.
So should you hold off for a week? That depends on which launcher you want it in.
The game Epic is handing out
This is Nightdive Studios' remaster of the late-90s classic, and Nightdive publishes it as well. It came out on 26 June last year. Same premise as ever: first-person horror with RPG systems, stranded aboard the starship Von Braun and up against the AI SHODAN.
Steam players like it. Reviews there are "Very Positive", with 87% of 1,801 in favour (1,567 positive).
The giveaway is PC only. The console versions have their own pages with us, System Shock 2 Remaster for Xbox and System Shock 2 Remaster for PS5, and nothing changes there.
Does the Epic copy work on Steam?
No. Claim it between 1 and 8 October and it stays in your Epic library for good, but you play it through the Epic launcher. It won't show up in your Steam library, it won't earn Steam achievements, and on a Steam Deck you can't just install it from your library like everything else.
If you already play on Epic, or genuinely don't mind where the game lives, it's an easy call. Wait a week and pay nothing.
What the Steam version costs this morning
Steam sells it for €28.99 (no fees), Steam Key, and there's no discount on right now. Reseller keys are a lot cheaper. The best one is at Itemku: €3.95 (€4.59 with fees), Steam Key. That's €24.40 less than buying from Valve.
Difmark comes in lower at €2.68 with coupon Gocdkeys (€2.80 with fees), but that's a Steam Account: you get the login to someone else's account with the game on it. For €1.79 more, the Itemku key goes into your own library, and that's the one we'd buy.
Wait a week or buy it now?
Waiting won't make the Steam copy much cheaper. Our historical figures are without fees. The median for this key in our records is €3.95, exactly today's price, and the lowest was €3.35 on 19 August. In 260 days of tracking, it has been cheaper than €3.95 on just 11 days. Across every format, the monthly lows sat between €3.94 and €3.97 from April to July. The €3.19 we saw in August and September was an account.
Put simply, €3.95 is what this key normally costs.
Happy to play on Epic? Wait until 1 October and claim it for free. It's yours to keep afterwards. If you want it on Steam, with your achievements and ready to go on a Steam Deck, the Epic giveaway doesn't help, and there's nothing to gain by waiting either. €4.59 with fees is its usual price and it has rarely gone lower.
