Daniel Mullins' first game is free on Steam until 12 October. Pony Island came out ten years ago, and anyone who adds it to their library before the deadline keeps it for good. The giveaway is tied to the Triple-i Initiative Showcase that aired on 8 October. The studio has also opened a free Steam playtest for Pony Island 2: Panda Circus, with a warning that it is still incomplete.
How to claim Pony Island on Steam
Log in, open the game's page in the Steam store and use the button that adds it to your library. There is no code to redeem and nothing to pay. Once it is in your library, it stays there after the promotion ends, even if you don't install it straight away.
Inscryption is the natural next step
If Pony Island clicks with you, Inscryption is the game most people know Mullins for: a card-battling roguelike with deckbuilding, horror and puzzles, developed by Daniel Mullins Games and published by Devolver Digital. 96% of its 135,409 Steam reviews are positive, which puts it at "Overwhelmingly Positive", and it holds a Metascore of 85.
Full price on Steam, under a third of that elsewhere
Steam isn't running a sale on Inscryption right now, so it costs the full €19.99 (no fees) there. The key shops are a very different story. Of the 33 offers we track, the cheapest this morning is a Steam Key at Gamivo: €4.64 with coupon GCDKGamivo, which turns into €5.55 once the payment fee is added. Cdkeys Com sells its Steam Key for €5.69 (no fees), so in the end the coupon saves you 14 cents. Gameboost comes in at €5.47 with GCDK13 (€5.73 with fees).
Buy now or wait for a sale?
Our price history makes this fairly easy to answer. All figures below exclude fees, except today's best offer:
| Reference | Price |
|---|---|
| Steam today | €19.99 (no fees) |
| Cheapest Steam Key this morning | €5.55 with fees (€4.64 with coupon) |
| Median, last 90 days | €5.69 |
| Cheapest single day since April | €5.19 |
| Median, full history | €11.74 |
| All-time low (K4G, three years ago) | €1.50 |
That €1.50 was a one-off deal at K4G in September three years ago, and nothing we have logged in recent months comes close. The €11.74 median is misleading too: it gets pulled up by the first months after launch, when even the cheapest key cost more than €13. The recent trend is what counts. Since April, the cheapest price on any single day has been €5.19, and the 90-day median is €5.69, exactly what Cdkeys Com is asking today.
In other words, today's price is the normal one. Waiting would probably save you a few cents. A flash deal like the one three years ago could come back, but we wouldn't plan around it.
What we would do
If Pony Island hooks you this week, go ahead and buy Inscryption. The Steam Key from Cdkeys Com at €5.69 (no fees) is 50 cents above the cheapest day we have recorded since April. What we wouldn't do is pay €19.99 on Steam while the game isn't discounted.
Rather hold out for a bigger drop? Set a price alert and we will email you when it falls. Every store and format, fees included, is on the page to buy Inscryption key.
