If you can play it on either, buy it on PC. That is the whole answer, and the gap is not small: the cheapest Xbox listing has been sitting around 47 % above the cheapest PC one, for a game that is the same game on both. The rest of this explains where that gap comes from and when each version is actually worth buying.
Same game, two very different markets
We track every store price for both versions every day. Put side by side, the difference is not about the game at all:
| Version | Lowest we have recorded | Live offers today | Floor trend |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC | 8.99 € | 19 | Bottomed out, then ticked up |
| Xbox | 14.69 € | 10 | Flat for two months |
Nineteen live offers against ten. That ratio is the gap: the PC key market has roughly twice the sellers competing, and competition is what pushes a floor down. The Xbox floor is not high because the version is better.
Why does the Xbox version cost more?
Because fewer sellers stock it. Console keys move through a narrower supply chain than PC keys, so on any given day there are fewer listings undercutting each other. You can see it in the spread too: the PC listings fan out from under 10 € to the low forties, while the Xbox side is thinner and clusters higher. Nothing about the Xbox build justifies the premium — you are paying for a smaller market.
The PC floor stopped falling, and then went back up
The PC low ran 19.50 € in April, 10.49 € in May, then 8.99 € across June and July. In August it moved the other way for the first time, back to 9.99 €. A euro is not a catastrophe, but the direction matters: after four months of falling, the cheapest sellers ran out of room. If you have been holding out for another cut, the trend stopped agreeing with you.
What do people who own it actually think?
Very Positive on Steam, from more than 114,000 reviews, with around 91 % of them positive. That is a large enough sample that it is not going to swing, and it is the part of the decision that price cannot tell you.
Picking a version without overpaying
Three things settle it:
- Region. A key locked to another region will not redeem on your account, and the very cheapest listings are usually the ones that are locked.
- Format. A full account is a different product from a key, on both platforms, even when the listing looks the same.
- Platform. If PC is an option at all, it is the cheaper one by a wide margin and always has been.
Both are compared shop by shop with the format spelled out on each: buy Subnautica 2 key for PC, or buy Subnautica 2 Xbox key if the console is where you play.
