Shenmue III Enhanced won't make it out this year. ININ Games, the publisher, and Yu Suzuki's studio Ys Net have told the community in their newsletter that it's moving from late this year to early next year. They didn't give a date.
If you were waiting for it before playing Shenmue III at all, the delay changes the maths a bit, especially on PC, where the original is going for about two euros this morning.
Early next year, on four platforms
Shenmue III Enhanced is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC. The original launched in November seven years ago on PS4 and PC, first on the Epic Games Store on PC and later on Steam.
What the Enhanced version changes
The graphical side is 4K textures, DLSS and FSR, faster loading and more people on the streets of Niaowu.
The rest goes after the things that put people off the first time. You can skip cutscenes, QTEs give you more time to react and there's a "classic camera" mode. There are also options to switch off stamina and health regeneration, and the in-game economy has been rebalanced, so money works differently.
Free on PC if you already own it; unclear on PS4
When Enhanced was announced, in August last year, it was confirmed that on PC it will be a free update for anyone who already has the game. Nobody has said how that works store by store, Steam versus Epic, so keep an eye on that when it lands.
For PS4 owners it's murkier. Some outlets say the upgrade will be free there too, but we haven't seen that confirmed officially.
Shenmue III on PC costs about two euros today
Kinguin has the Steam key for €1.69 with coupon OCTGOC10 (€2.17 with fees). We've been tracking it for 334 days and it has never been cheaper than this; until now the lowest was €2.00, on 12 October, and the median is €2.27 (both without fees).
There's not much room left for it to fall, and since Enhanced arrives free for anyone who already owns the game on PC, buying now doesn't mean paying twice. If you were going to play it on PC anyway, we'd buy Shenmue III key this week and pick up the update when it comes.
On PS4, and if you never played the first two
On PS4 the PlayStation Store asks €29.99 (no fees). With Enhanced on the way and no official word on a free upgrade for PS4, that's a lot to pay right now. We'd wait. Difmark also sells a PS4 account for €12.59 with coupon Gocdkeys (€13.16 with fees), but that's someone else's account, the game never lands on yours, and we don't recommend it.
Shenmue III picks up Ryo's story right where the second game left it, so if you haven't played the first two, start there. Shenmue I & II on PC costs €3.78 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€4.66 with fees) at Gamivo as a Steam key, against €34.99 (no fees) on Steam. That's its usual price, not a sale: the median is €3.63 without fees. On Steam it's rated Very Positive, 89% of 2,156 reviews.
If you'd rather wait and see the Enhanced date first, set a price alert on Shenmue III.
Prices checked on the morning of 27 October.
