Team17 had a surprise ready for the Triple-i Initiative Showcase on 8 October: The Escapists 3. It is coming next year to PC through Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, with no release date or price yet. Team17 is developing and publishing it, and it is the first new game in the series in almost a decade, since The Escapists 2.
You can't buy it yet, and it isn't in our catalogue so far. The two earlier games, on the other hand, cost a little over two euros each this morning, fees included. So the real question is which one to play in the meantime.
What changes in The Escapists 3
The most obvious change is the look. The series drops its 2D pixel art for a 3D world. The camera still looks down from above by default, but you can now zoom in a lot closer.
There will be five prisons at launch, each with its own routines, characters and secrets, and more than 120 items and weapons to steal or craft. A new experience system unlocks active and passive perks, and you keep them when you move on to the next prison. Online co-op takes up to four players. Two can also play split-screen on the same machine.
The first game or The Escapists 2?
Mouldy Toof Studios created the original The Escapists and Team17 published it. It is single-player only. The Escapists 2 added multiplayer, with local and online co-op.
If you want to break out with friends, which is exactly where the third game is heading, get The Escapists 2. If you'd rather plan your escape alone, or you're curious about how the series started, the first one is fine. Both are rated 90% positive on Steam.

The Escapists 2 for just over two euros
The cheapest deal this morning is a Steam Key at K4G: €1.65 with coupon GCDK14DEAL, which comes to €2.19 with fees. Kinguin (Europe region) is only a few cents more at €1.79 with OCTGOC10 (€2.28 with fees), and Cdkeys Com charges €2.39 with no fees. Steam is asking €5.39 today, no fees. Its usual price there is €19.99 and it drops to €4.99 in sales, so even a Steam sale costs more than twice as much.
Among the offers you'll also see a Steam Account at Driffle for €1.76 with GOCDKEYS10 (€2.22 with fees). That is a new Steam account that already has the game on it, so nothing gets added to your own library, and with fees it costs more than the K4G key anyway.
The Game of the Year Edition adds the DLC, extra prisons included. K4G has it for €3.90 with GCDK14DEAL (€4.63 with fees), and Cdkeys Com for €5.29 with no fees.
Waiting for a big drop won't get you much. Over the last 90 days, the median of the lowest daily price was €1.81 without fees, so today's price is a normal one. If you still want to try your luck, set a price alert for The Escapists 2 and we'll email you when it gets cheaper.
The original: Steam is close behind
For the first game the gap is small. Cdkeys Com sells the Steam Key for €2.09 with no fees, and Driffle (Europe region) for €1.79 with GOCDKEYS10, which comes to €2.25 with fees. Steam has it discounted to €2.34 with no fees, down from the €14.99 we usually see there. That's 25 cents in favour of the key store.
Key stores have kept it under two or three euros for years. In our price history the median of the daily lowest price is €1.72, and the lowest we have recorded is €0.66, both without fees and across every store and format.
Bought together, the two games cost €4.28 with fees this morning: the first at Cdkeys Com, the second at K4G. Every store and format, fees included, is on the pages to buy The Escapists 2 key and buy The Escapists key.
