Risk of Rain 2 got its fourth paid expansion on 8 October. Hallowed Concepts is made by Gearbox Software, costs €14.99 (no fees) on Steam and, like the three before it, needs the base game.
With four DLC out now, paying Steam prices for the whole lot adds up quickly. Below: what the new one brings, what each expansion costs this morning, and which ones we'd actually buy.
What Hallowed Concepts adds
This is what its Steam page lists:
- Two new survivors, Acolyte and Enforcer. If you played the first Risk of Rain, Enforcer is an old friend.
- New areas of Petrichor V and new enemies.
- Trials, a set of tougher challenges, plus three Winnowing challenges called Survival, Predation and Mortality.
- Hallowed items, which you earn by finding Hexes and surviving them.
- The N'tormat, a curiosity you unlock by collecting its pages.
Steam reviews are Mostly Positive, with 78% of 1,298 players recommending it. That's a clear step down from the base game, where 93% of 242,446 reviews are positive.
In co-op, one copy covers the whole lobby
If one person in the group owns Hallowed Concepts, its monsters, stages and items show up in the run for everybody.
Players who don't own it can't pick Acolyte or Enforcer, and they can't permanently unlock the new items or logbook entries. If you always play with the same friends, only one of you really needs to buy it. Ideally the one who wants to play the new survivors.
Hallowed Concepts: Steam against the cheapest reseller
The cheapest Steam Key for Hallowed Concepts this morning is at HRKGame: €8.96 with the Gocdkeys12 coupon (€9.97 with fees). Cdkeys Com has it at €11.99 (no fees), and Steam itself at €14.99 (no fees).
It has been on sale for less than three weeks, so we don't have enough price history yet to say whether it's likely to drop soon.
You'll also spot a Difmark offer at €7.55 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€7.89 with fees). That one is a Steam account. You get the username and password of someone else's Steam account that already owns the content, nothing goes into your own library, and if the seller takes the account back, you lose it. For a DLC it makes even less sense, because the expansion never reaches your copy of the game. Compare keys with keys and HRKGame comes out on top.
The other three expansions and what they cost
Survivors of the Void was the first DLC: it brought in the Void and two survivors, Railgunner and Void Fiend. It's also by far the cheapest of the four. Difmark sells the Steam Key for €2.65 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€2.77 with fees), while Steam charges €14.99 (no fees).
Alloyed Collective is rated Very Positive on Steam, 92% of 3,513 reviews. Gameboost has the Steam Key at €7.18 with the GCDK13 coupon (€7.51 with fees), against €14.99 (no fees) on Steam.
Then there's Seekers of the Storm. The price is fine, €5.79 (no fees) for the Steam Key at Cdkeys Com, but players haven't been kind: reviews are Mixed, with only 54% of 11,375 positive. It's the one we'd leave until last.
The base game isn't actually on sale
If you don't own Risk of Rain 2 yet, Steam sells it for €24.99 (no fees). The cheapest Steam Key is Gamivo's, at €3.57 with the GCDKGamivo coupon (€4.44 with fees).
Some sites are pushing that as a discount. Our price history disagrees. Over the last six months the game was cheaper than today on 144 out of 183 days, and on 20 May it went down to €2.59 (without fees, as with all historical lows). Today's price is just its usual price.
Planning to buy it anyway? Fine, here are the offers to buy Risk of Rain 2 key. If you're in no hurry, set a price alert and we'll tell you when it drops.
The Steam bundle or everything separately?
Steam bundles the base game with all four expansions (five items) for €69.65 (no fees), 18% off the €84.95 (no fees) they cost one by one. With the cheapest keys available this morning, the same five come to about €30 with fees.
We wouldn't buy them all at once, though. Here's the order we'd go in:
- New to the game: base game plus Survivors of the Void, €7.21 with fees for the pair.
- Hallowed Concepts if you play in a group and nobody has it yet, or if you want Acolyte and Enforcer for yourself.
- Alloyed Collective after that, given how well it's reviewed.
- Seekers of the Storm at the very end, because of its Mixed reviews.
Prices checked on the morning of 28 October.
