Around 10 September, people who own Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown on Steam started seeing a new notice inside the game. Ubisoft is testing a tool called Ubisoft Connect Services on Steam, and The Lost Crown is the first game to get it. If you're about to buy the game, it's worth knowing what the change covers, because the announcement is about the Steam version and most of the cheap offers are for a different copy.
What Ubisoft Connect Services changes
- The Steam version starts without you having to install or run the Ubisoft Connect app for PC.
- You still need a Ubisoft account. You link it once, the first time you launch the game.
- Cross-platform progression, challenges and Ubisoft rewards keep working as before.
For now this is a test on one game. Ubisoft hasn't confirmed which other games will get it, so there's no point buying anything else from its catalogue on the assumption that it will.
Then there are the Ubisoft Connect keys, which stores sell as Uplay keys. You redeem one in Ubisoft Connect and the game goes into that library, so you would still launch it through Ubisoft's own app. That's our reading of what has been announced: so far, Ubisoft hasn't said anything about those copies.
What each copy of The Lost Crown costs today

The Standard Uplay key at Gamivo comes to €6.34 before fees with the coupon GCDKGamivo. That's the lowest key price in our 155 days of data: the previous low was €6.99 on 2 August and the median is €9.15, both before fees. G2A at €7.50 and Kinguin at €7.88, both with fees, are close behind.
Getting a copy onto Steam costs a good deal more. After Gamivo's €25.75 gift, the next Steam gifts are G2A at €29.33 and K4G at €30.16, with fees, while the other Steam key, at CJS-CDKeys, is €31.59 with no fees, so Steam itself is the better place for a key. Side by side, the Steam version costs €18.30 more than the Uplay key if you take the gift, and €22.54 more if you buy it from Steam. It hasn't always been like this: Steam cut it to €8.99 at the end of June and to €14.99 at the end of July, before going back to €29.99.
The €7.18 shared account at Difmark is the cheapest offer on the page, and it doesn't give you a copy of your own. You log in to another person's Steam account, the game never appears in your library, and you can lose access at any time. For 27 cents more, the Standard Uplay key is yours to keep.
The Complete Edition adds the Mask of Darkness DLC, the Immortals outfit, a prosperity bird amulet, a digital guide and two outfits inspired by The Two Thrones. As a Uplay key it's €12.64 with fees at G2A or €13.18 with fees at Eneba, so €5.19 more than the Standard if the DLC interests you.
How to activate each format
- Uplay key: open the Ubisoft Connect app, choose Activate Product and enter the code. The game is added to your Ubisoft Connect library.
- Steam key: in Steam, click Add a Game, then Activate a Product on Steam, and type in the code.
- Steam gift: accept it from the link the store sends you or from the notification in Steam, and it goes straight into your library.
With either of the two Steam copies, the first launch asks you to link your Ubisoft account. After that, as long as this test is running, the game opens without the Ubisoft Connect app.
Which copy is right for you?
If all you want is to play it for as little as possible and Ubisoft Connect doesn't bother you, the Standard Uplay key at €7.45 with fees is the obvious choice, and we've never seen it cheaper. It's well regarded too: Very Positive on Steam, with 5,649 of 6,725 reviews positive, and 85 on Metacritic.
If you'd rather have it on Steam and try the launcher-free start now, the Gamivo gift at €25.75 with fees undercuts Steam's €29.99 by €4.24. Bear in mind that Steam had it at €8.99 and €14.99 in its two summer sales, so if skipping the launcher is your only reason to pick the Steam version, paying the full €29.99 today is a big premium for it.
