Since 26 October there's a new free horror game on Steam, and it comes from DarkStone Digital, the studio behind The Mortuary Assistant. It's called Playable Archive, DreadXP publishes it, and it's free to play for good. There's no deadline to grab it.
Meanwhile Steam has The Mortuary Assistant at half price until Monday 2 November. If tonight's short scare works for you, the studio's bigger game is cheaper than we've ever seen it.
What Playable Archive is about
A couple in New England are renovating their house when they find a mysterious object. The game presents everything as an archive put together by an anonymous informant.
According to several sources, it grew out of material from a Paranormal Activity game that was cancelled. That full game isn't coming back.
It takes 30 to 60 minutes and there's no saving, so play it in one sitting. On Steam, 97% of its 79 reviews are positive. Early days, but a good start.
How to add it to your Steam library
You don't need a key or a card, and there's nothing to buy in any shop.
- Search for "Playable Archive" in the Steam store and open its page.
- Click "Play Game" or "Add to Library", whichever Steam shows you.
- Download it from your library.
The minimum requirements are modest: Windows 10 or later, 6 GB of RAM, a GeForce GTX 960 and 2 GB of free space.
The Mortuary Assistant is at its lowest on Steam until Monday
Steam is selling it for €10.49 (no fees), 50% off its usual €20.99 (no fees), until 2 November. We've been following its Steam price for six months, and €10.49 (no fees) is the lowest in our history.
You play Rebecca, an apprentice at a funeral home. The job is embalming bodies by the book, but something demonic has got into one of them, and you have to work out which one and find the demon's name. Every run plays out differently and there are several endings.
It came out in August four years ago and runs on Windows only. On Steam it's rated Very Positive, with 92% of 7,335 reviews in favour.
Why Steam is the better buy this week
If you want the game on your own account, no reseller beats Steam once fees are added. The cheapest Steam Gift is at Gameseal, €10.15 with the SEAL17CKD coupon (€11.41 with fees), and Kinguin has one for €11.53 with OCTGOC10 (€12.80 with fees). The cheapest Steam key is at G2A: €16.31 with the GCKG2AM4E7H coupon (€16.60 with fees).
You'll also spot a Steam account at Key4Games for €2.88 with the GOCDKEYS15 coupon (€3.26 with fees). That's a different product. You get the username and password of someone else's Steam account that already owns the game. It never reaches your library, and if the seller takes the account back, the game goes with it. Don't weigh it against a key as if they were the same thing.
Our suggestion: play Playable Archive tonight, and if that kind of horror grabs you, pick up The Mortuary Assistant on Steam before Monday. Every store is compared on the page to buy The Mortuary Assistant key. Rather wait for another sale? Set a price alert.
