Pugstorm and Fireshine Games have made Core Keeper free to play on Steam from 8 to 12 October. It's the full game, online multiplayer included, and whatever you dig up and build this weekend carries over if you buy it afterwards. Steam is also running a 40% discount until 22 October, which takes it to €11.99 (no fees) from €19.99.
Key shops go a fair bit lower. This morning the cheapest Steam Key is at Gamivo: €4.37 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€5.27 with fees), less than half the Steam price. Our comparison does show one offer below that, at €1.13. If you've spent the weekend underground and want to keep your world, skip it.
Your progress stays with your own Steam account
The free weekend runs on whichever account you're logged into, so that's the account that has to own the game for you to carry on. You can buy it on Steam, or redeem a Steam Key in the client (Games menu, "Activate a Product on Steam"). Either way Core Keeper lands in your library alongside everything else, with your friends list and achievements where they've always been.
What the €1.13 Steam Account actually gets you
The cheapest offer this morning is a Steam Account from Difmark at €1.08 with coupon Gocdkeys (€1.13 with fees). With this format you don't get a code to redeem. You get the login details for a fresh Steam account that already owns Core Keeper. It's a legitimate format, and for a single-player game you only want to try, it can make sense. The catch is that the game never reaches your own account: you'd have to log out of yours to play, start from scratch, and your friends and achievements would stay on the other profile.
Already got half a cave system mapped out? The extra €4 or so for a Steam Key is money well spent.
The cheapest copies for your own library
These are this morning's five cheapest Steam Keys with a Global or Europe region, sorted by what you actually pay at checkout:
| Store | Region | Price (coupon) | With fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamivo | Global / Europe | €4.37 (GCDKGamivo) | €5.27 |
| Gameboost | Europe | €5.21 (GCDK13) | €5.45 |
| Gameseal | Global | €4.73 (SEAL17CKD) | €5.49 |
| YUPLAY | Global | €5.49 (no coupon) | €5.49 (no fees) |
| Instant Gaming | Global | €5.79 (no coupon) | €5.79 (no fees) |
Payment fees shuffle the order. With its coupon Gameseal is cheaper than Gameboost, yet it ends up 4 cents dearer once the fee is added. YUPLAY and Instant Gaming charge no fees at all, so the price you see is the price you pay.
Global or Europe, not US
Global and Europe keys activate without trouble on a Steam account registered in Europe. Among the 37 offers we track there are also US-region versions, such as Kinguin's at €5.41 with coupon OCTGOC10 (€6.19 with fees). Those are meant for American accounts and may refuse to activate on a European one. They aren't any cheaper either, so check the region before you pay.
The €1.28 in our price history is the account
We have Core Keeper prices for 761 days, going back more than four years. The lowest daily price on record is €1.00 (no fees) at GamersGate, a little over three years ago. Over the past few days our daily low has sat at €1.28 (no fees), but that figure is the Difmark Steam Account, so it tells you nothing about what a key costs.
Is it worth buying once the weekend ends?
Core Keeper is a survival sandbox set in underground caves that you mine your way through, alone or in co-op with friends. Pugstorm develops it and Fireshine Games publishes it. On Steam it's rated "Very Positive", with 92% of 50,436 reviews recommending it, and it holds a Metascore of 85.
