Steam has cut The Lamplighters League by 75%, from €49.99 to €12.49 (no fees). That looks like a decent sale until you check what keys are going for. This morning the cheapest Steam Key is at G2A: €1.63 with coupon GCKG2AC9Q3M (€1.92 with fees). Steam hasn't said when its discount ends.
Pulp adventure from the makers of BattleTech
It's made by Harebrained Schemes, the studio behind Shadowrun Returns and BattleTech, and published by Paradox Interactive. This is turn-based tactics in an interwar pulp setting: the Lamplighters League recruits a crew of criminals and adventurers to fight a secret society called the Banished Court.
It launched in October three years ago and didn't sell the way Paradox hoped. The publisher said publicly that it had underperformed and wrote it down in its accounts.
What the critics thought
Reception was uneven. On OpenCritic it has 75/100 and a "Fair" rating from 31 critics, and only 45% of them recommend it. We don't have a Steam user review score for it, so bear in mind that's the critics talking, not players.
An average of 75 with fewer than half recommending it tends to mean split opinions rather than a broken game: some reviewers enjoyed it, others had enough reservations to hold back.
Where to buy it for a fraction of Steam's price
There are 39 offers in stock across 18 verified stores. These are the cheapest for the standard edition. All of them are Steam Keys, so the game ends up in your own Steam library.
| Store | With coupon | With fees | Region |
|---|---|---|---|
| G2A | €1.63 (GCKG2AC9Q3M) | €1.92 | Global |
| Gameboost | €1.86 (GCDK13) | €1.95 | Global |
| Kinguin | €1.58 (OCTGOC10) | €2.06 | Global |
| K4G | €1.57 (GCDK14DEAL) | €2.10 | Europe |
| Instant Gaming | €2.28 | €2.28 (no fees) | Global |
Kinguin and K4G have the lowest coupon prices, but their payment fees put them behind G2A and Gameboost at checkout. K4G's key is for Europe; the rest are global. Whichever of the five you pick, you pay more than €10 less than on Steam.
The lowest price since we started tracking it
We started tracking this key in late April. Since then the median store price has been €2.05 and the lowest €2.00, on 4 May. Those historical figures are without fees, so the fair comparison is with G2A's €1.63 with coupon, also without fees. That's below every store price we've logged in almost six months.
Is it worth €1.92?
At full price, those reviews would make it a hard sell. At under €2 you're not risking much. If you enjoyed BattleTech or Shadowrun Returns and like the idea of a pulp adventure, it's a cheap way to see which camp of critics you fall into. If you only buy tactics games that everyone agrees on, you can skip it, but don't pay €12.49 on Steam for something that costs about a sixth of that as a key.
