SEGA and Creative Assembly released Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition on PC on 13 October. It's on Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG and the Microsoft Store for €39.99 (£34.99 or $39.99). Two days in, its Steam reviews are "Overwhelmingly Negative", with fewer than one in five players recommending it.
Meanwhile the original Shogun 2, which critics gave a 90 on Metacritic, has disappeared from the Steam store: it hasn't been sold on its own there since 28 September. Keys for it are still easy to find, and the cheapest Steam Key costs less than €5.
What does the Complete Edition add to the original?
According to Creative Assembly's official FAQ, the new version brings:
- better visuals, with reworked lighting and shadows;
- full Japanese and Chinese voice-over and text;
- more than 50 new playable factions;
- all three campaigns in one package: Shogun 2, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai;
- built-in mod support through Mod.io, replacing Steam Workshop.
That last point is where many fans got burned. Mods made for the original don't work in the Complete Edition. They still work in the original, so nothing you have installed there is lost.
Why players are slating it on Steam
Performance tops the list of complaints, especially frame rate drops on the campaign map. Players also report bugs the original didn't have, like units ignoring orders, and a lot of the negative reviews come from people whose mod setups stopped working after the move to Mod.io.
There's also an accusation going around that some unit cards use AI-generated or AI-upscaled art. SEGA hasn't confirmed it, so treat it as a claim from players for now.
Already own Shogun 2 on Steam? Here's what changes
Your copy stays in your library and plays exactly as before, mods included. Owners also get two extras:
- any of the old DLC you were missing, added for free;
- a 75% loyalty discount on the Complete Edition, which brings it down to about €10. It's a limited-time offer that ends on 12 November at 4pm GMT.
Buying the Complete Edition on Steam also gets you the original Shogun 2 and its DLC. On the Microsoft Store, Epic or GOG you only get the Complete Edition.
What the FAQ doesn't say is whether a key for the original activated now still qualifies for the discount. We couldn't confirm it either way, so don't buy a cheap key just to get the new version for €10.

What the original costs this morning
The cheapest standard Steam Key is at Cdkeys.com for €4.79 (no fees). Gamivo has a different edition, the Collector, for even less: €3.15 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€4.01 with fees), also as a Steam Key.
If you're not in a hurry, though, this isn't the week to buy it. Across the 751 days for which we have its price, the median price is €4.08 and the low was €2.63 on 20 August (both without fees). Today's €4.79 is 17% above its usual price, and on 592 of those days it was cheaper than it is now.
Only after Fall of the Samurai? It's a standalone expansion with its own page, and the Steam Key is €4.68 at YUPLAY (no fees).
Is the Complete Edition worth €39.99?
Not at the moment. At full price it costs about eight times as much as the original, and the people who've bought it are mostly unhappy. The reviews may improve with patches, but nobody can promise that.
If you already own the original on Steam, the maths is different: around €10 for the extra campaigns, the new factions and the Japanese voices is reasonable. You have until 12 November, so you can afford to wait a few weeks and see whether SEGA fixes the performance before deciding.
If you don't own it, the original is the safer buy: it's the version that earned the 90, it keeps its mods, and it costs under €5. Since its price is above normal right now, you can set a price alert for Total War: Shogun 2 and we'll email you when it drops to the price you pick. Every store and edition, fees included, is on the page to buy Total War: Shogun 2 key.
