Halloween: The Game reaches full release on 8 September, which is tomorrow. IllFonic, the studio behind Friday the 13th: The Game, opened early access at the start of the month, so the Steam page already carries thousands of reviews written before the proper launch.
Our PC page is where it gets odd. Twelve offers, seven stores, and not one of them is a code you redeem into your own Steam account.
Twelve offers on PC, and only one of them sells the game
Six of the twelve are shared Steam accounts, all Global: Kinguin at €17.29, Driffle at €19.44, Gamivo and K4G both at €19.48, G2A at €21.29 and Difmark at €31.49. Five more are Steam Gift: Gamivo €35.65, Driffle €46.21, K4G €46.70, Kinguin €47.66 and G2A €47.92. Number twelve is Valve's own Standard edition at €40.99.
Count the ordinary purchases and you land on one. The resellers who normally have their stock ready days before a launch have nothing for this title yet, which turns the lowest figure on the page into the least useful one.
What €17.29 actually buys
A shared account is a username and a password. You log into a profile that belongs to somebody else, the game is already sitting in that library, and it stays there. It never arrives in yours. You cannot gift it, you cannot resell it, your own achievements and friends list stay outside, and the day the seller changes the password the arrangement ends with no refund worth the name.
Twenty-three euros and seventy cents separate Kinguin's account from Steam's copy. That is the fee for borrowing instead of owning, and on a horror game most people will want to open with friends in launch week, it holds up badly.
Steam Gift: one below the official price, four above it
A gift is not a code either. Someone sends the game from their own Steam account, so there is a friend request, a wait for the transfer, and a region that has to match yours. Of the five here, only Gamivo's €35.65 slips under Valve, by €5.34. The other four ask between €46.21 and €47.92, five to seven euros more than the official store charges for the same thing without any of the waiting.
PS5: the shared account costs exactly what Sony charges
Four offers on the PS5 page. Difmark wants €39.99 for a console account. The PlayStation Store wants €39.99 for a PSN code, though our last reading of that one dates from 24 June. Behind them, Fnac ES at €45.99 and Media Markt ES at €47.99, both Standard.
Read those first two entries twice. Same money, and one of them leaves the game in your account while the other leaves it in a stranger's. We hold 173 daily readings on that page since 28 April and €39.99 is the floor in every one of them, so nobody is missing a cheaper moment by paying Sony.
Xbox: the same Deluxe edition at €51.15 and at €99.99
Six offers from four stores on Xbox. Difmark lists the console account twice at €39.99. Fnac ES sells the Standard at €45.99, Media Markt ES at €47.99. Then Eneba has the Deluxe twice over: €51.15 for Europe and €99.99 for the United States. Identical edition, €48.84 apart, and the only thing that changes is the region on the listing. Reading that one line before you pay saves more here than any amount of shopping around.
The Xbox history runs to 118 readings since 28 April with a floor of €39.99, and that floor has always belonged to the same Difmark account.
What came down over the past ten days
From 18 to 27 August the cheapest offer on the PC page read €31.99 every single day. On the 28th it dropped to €15.38 for one day, a G2A account and nothing else, then went straight back to €31.99 until 1 September. After that: €27.14 on the 2nd and 3rd, €22.81 on the 4th, €21.29 on the 5th, €16.00 on the 6th, and €17.29 this morning.
Every one of those figures is an account. The record low across 118 readings since 28 April is €13.81, from 28 and 29 May, and that was a G2A account too, so the history on this page is no guide to what a copy of the game has ever cost. Steam has asked €40.99 throughout. The price of borrowing has halved in ten days; the price of owning has not moved a cent.
On reception, Steam has it at Mostly Positive, 3,157 positive out of 4,510, a shade over 70 per cent, all written during early access. No critic score has reached our page, so there is nothing to quote on that front.
If you want it running tomorrow and you want it to stay yours, PC has no shortcut today. You can buy Halloween key from the one shop actually selling a copy, and look again in a week or two once the resellers have stock.
