If you have been working through Commandos Origins on Game Pass, the clock is now running. It is on the batch that leaves the catalogue on 15 September, alongside Dead Cells, Frostpunk 2, Spiritfarer, Superliminal, Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor and a few more. The question is the obvious one: what does a copy of your own cost, and is this a sensible moment to pay for it?
Short version: on PC the cheapest code that stays in your library is €20.49, 41% under the €34.99 Steam asks. Fair money, though our history has seen it a lot lower, for reasons that have nothing to do with Game Pass.
What leaves on the 15th, and what your save file does
Commandos Origins is the prequel to the old Second World War real-time tactics series, made by Claymore Game Studios and published by Kalypso Media. It has been out since 9 April of last year on PC, Xbox and PlayStation, and was on Game Pass for PC and console. On Steam it sits at Mostly Positive, with 1,423 positive reviews out of 1,824.
The usual Game Pass rule covers your progress: when a game leaves the catalogue the save stays, and if you later buy it on the same platform it picks up from there. No need to rush a purchase before the 15th to protect a half-finished campaign; you can buy in the next Steam sale and carry on.
€14.27 buys a login, €20.49 buys the game
Our PC page has 56 offers from 19 stores right now, and the five cheapest are all Steam accounts: Difmark at €14.27, K4G at €14.62, Kinguin at €18.14, Gameseal at €18.86 and G2A at €20.01. You are paying for access to a Steam account somebody else created: the game never lands in your own library, and if the password changes you are left with nothing. For something you might want to come back to in a year, that is a poor fit.
The first ordinary code, one you redeem on your own account, is Gameseal at €20.49, Global region. Behind it come Gamivo at €20.91 (Global), Kinguin at €21.65 (Global), Gameboost at €21.68, K4G at €21.77, Driffle at €22.10, G2A at €22.95 (Europe), Instant Gaming at €24.19 (Europe), Cdkeys Com at €24.79 (Global) and Gaming Dragons at €25.55. Twenty-three codes in all, the first ten inside five euros: nobody is running out.
Nine Steam Gift offers start at €33.59. A gift comes from another account and depends on the regions matching, and at that money you might as well buy from Steam at €34.99. GamesPlanet asks €38.78, Humble Bundle €42.49, Fanatical €42.79 and GamersGate €49.99.
The Deluxe and the three mission packs
There is a Deluxe Edition; we do not have a reliable breakdown of what it adds, so cost is all we will compare. On resale it starts at €24.51 from Gameseal, then K4G €25.11, Kinguin €25.86 and Driffle €26.40, nineteen offers in all. That is four to five euros above the cheapest Standard code. From the official stores the same Deluxe costs €46.54 at GamesPlanet, €47.99 at Humble and €59.99 at GamersGate and Green Man Gaming, roughly €22 more than the resale copies.
The three mission DLCs are sold separately on PC. Classified Archives is €6.79 on Steam. Shadows over Crete starts at €6.95 from Kinguin, against €11.99 on Steam. No Man Left Behind has a code from €8.58 at Eneba, against €12.74 on Steam, plus account offers from €7.55 that carry the same catch as the accounts for the main game.
On Xbox and PS5 the sums are worse
The console pages are thin. On Xbox there are eight offers: two accounts (Difmark €13.43, G2A €17.54), an Xbox code from Instant Gaming at €38.19, a Deluxe from Gamivo at €34.32 in US region, and the Microsoft Store at €59.99. The cheapest copy of your own on Xbox costs almost double the PC code. On PS5 there are only two offers: a Difmark account at €40.31 and the PlayStation Store at €59.99.
If you played it on console through Game Pass and have a PC that runs it, the PC page is where the money is.
Buy now, or wait for Steam to do it again?
We have 2,437 daily readings on the PC page since 28 April, and the number to remember is €9.75. That is what Steam itself charged from 8 May to 2 June, an official 72% discount. Anyone who caught it paid less than half of today's cheapest code.
Since then, very little. From 21 July the lowest offer in our readings has been the same €16.99 account, 44 days without a change, while the codes have hovered between €20 and €25 for weeks. Leaving Game Pass has not moved anything, and we see no sign that it will: stores do not cut prices because a subscription dropped a game.
So the answer splits in two. If you want to keep playing after the 15th without a gap, the €20.49 code is reasonable. If you can put it down for a while, Steam has already shown it is willing to go to €9.75, and our page will show the next time it does. Either way, when you go to buy Commandos Origins key, skip the five accounts at the top and start reading from €20.49.
