Chained Beasts went on sale yesterday, 15 October, at 6pm UK time on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch, and it landed in Xbox Game Pass the same day. If you don't subscribe, the cheapest PC offer this morning is a Steam Key from Driffle at €9.78 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€10.53 with fees). Steam itself charges €12.99 (no fees).
Gladiators chained to one another
Featherweight Games both develops and publishes it. It's a gladiator brawler set in an arena and built around co-op for up to four players, either online or sharing one screen on the sofa. The twist is that the players are chained together. You can also play it solo, and crossplay is supported, so friends who own it on a different platform can still join you.
On Steam it has 106 reviews, 102 of them positive (96%), which earns it a "Very Positive" rating. That's a good start from a very small sample, mostly people who bought it in the first few hours.
On Game Pass? Just download it
If you already pay for Game Pass, there's nothing to buy. You can play for as long as you stay subscribed and the game stays in the catalogue, and nobody has said how long that will be.
Buying a copy makes more sense if you don't use Game Pass, or if the people you play with are on Steam or Switch.
PC: €2.46 less than on Steam
There are only three PC offers this morning, which is about what you'd expect the day after launch. Driffle's Steam Key works out at €9.78 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€10.53 with fees). Even with fees counted, that's €2.46, or 19%, below Steam's €12.99 (no fees). You activate the key on Steam and the game goes into your library like any other purchase.
The third offer, from Difmark, is a Steam Account and costs more than Steam itself. It's a separate account that already owns the game rather than a copy for yours, so there's no reason to pick it.
Switch only has accounts for now
No Switch keys or eShop codes are in stock. The cheapest option is an Account from Key4Games at €21.67 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€22.90 with fees). That gets you access to a Nintendo Account that already owns the game: you play on your own console, but the purchase isn't on your account, and if the seller ever takes the account back, the game goes with it. We don't track the Nintendo eShop price for this one, though you can of course buy it there.
The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions aren't in our comparison yet. On Xbox, Game Pass subscribers don't need to buy it anyway.
Buy it at launch or hold off?
It has only just come out, so we have no price history to compare against. We can't tell you whether €10.53 is a good price or simply the first one. With three PC offers, more stores will probably list it over the coming weeks.
The roadmap is another reason not to rush. Featherweight Games has announced update 1.1 for December, with a new arena, boss, weapon and enemies, followed by a PvP mode early next year. It hasn't said whether either will cost extra.
If your group of four is ready to go this weekend, Driffle's key already saves you nearly €2.50 over Steam. If not, set a price alert for Chained Beasts and we'll email you when it drops to the price you choose.
