Paradox confirmed on 7 October that Cities: Skylines – Expanded Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on 28 October. Tantalus Media did the port, and the announced eShop price is €49 ($49, £41.49). That gets you the base game plus all ten expansions and content packs, After Dark, Snowfall, Green Cities and Sunset Harbor among them.

Colossal Order's city builder has aged well on PC: 92% of its 219,401 Steam reviews are positive ("Very Positive"), and Metacritic has it at 85. Whether the Switch 2 edition is worth €49 to you depends mostly on where you play it now.

What the Switch 2 edition adds over the old Switch release

The Nintendo Switch Edition came out eight years ago with two expansions, After Dark and Snowfall, and a buildable area of 9 tiles. On Switch 2 your city can spread across 25.

Paradox also lists a map editor, precision placement, a distance indicator and more fine-tuning options, plus an environment panel where you set the time of day, rain, fog and colour. There are two display modes, performance at 60fps and quality at 30fps, and you can plug in a keyboard and mouse instead of using the controller.

Already own it on Switch? Wait for the 70% upgrade discount

The upgrade is not free. If you have the Switch edition, you get 70% off the Expanded Edition from 28 October to 28 April, which leaves six months to make up your mind.

Thinking of picking up the Switch version cheaply now to qualify? Our comparator has no eShop codes for it in stock this morning, only accounts: Key4Games at €11.05 with coupon GOCDKEYS15 (€11.80 with fees), Difmark at €12.84 with coupon Gocdkeys (€13.42 with fees) and Consogame at €14.99 (no fees). What you get there is the login to someone else's Nintendo Account that owns the game.

The 70% is aimed at people who own the Switch edition on their own account, so we doubt a shared account would unlock it for you. Paradox hasn't addressed that case; take it as our reading of the offer.

PC players: today's offers are well above normal

Steam sells the base game for €27.99 (no fees), with no discount today. Key stores go far lower. K4G has the cheapest Steam Key at €5.42 with coupon GCDK14DEAL (€6.28 with fees), ahead of G2A at €6.31 with GCKG2AT6V1P (€6.60 with fees), a Europe-region key from Gamivo at €5.57 with GCDKGamivo (€6.75 with fees) and Driffle at €6.29 with GOCDKEYS10 (€6.92 with fees).

The lowest price of all belongs to a Steam Account from Difmark, €3.43 with coupon Gocdkeys (€3.58 with fees). That's another person's Steam login: the game never lands in your library, and you lose it the day the owner changes the password. We'd leave it.

Here is the catch. In our price history (no fees, no coupons) the key's median is €2.56, and its lowest point was €2.00, on 31 October eight years ago. Out of the 676 days we have on record, it was cheaper than today on 593. From April to September the monthly low across all formats was €2.56 every single month; October's so far is €4.08, and that one is the account.

Today's best key costs more than twice its median, then. Unless you want to start building tonight, set a price alert and we'll email you when it drops.

Mods are still the reason to play on PC

The Steam Workshop holds years of community buildings, maps and mods, and the Switch 2 announcement says nothing about mods at all. One thing to keep in mind when comparing: those cheap keys are the base game. On PC, the expansions that come bundled in the Expanded Edition are bought separately.

28 October brings something for the other platforms too: two Content Creator Packs, Holiday Getaways and Mansions & Manors, and a new radio station called Blueprint Beats. Steam lists them as "coming soon", with no price yet.
