Borderlands 4 is free to play on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation until 14 September (the Xbox trial ends a few hours earlier), and 2K has put it on sale at 50% off for its anniversary at the same time. The free weekend includes the full game with everything added since launch, such as the Circle of Slaughter mode.
Our Steam player readings show daily peaks of 4,000 to 6,400 in the last week of August. At 01:23 UTC on 11 September (02:23 UK time) it peaked at 14,497, more than double.
Free weekend dates on Steam, Xbox and PlayStation
- Steam: from 10 September at 10:00 PT (18:00 UK) until 14 September at 10:00 PT (18:00 UK).
- Xbox: with Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential, from 10 September at 08:00 PT (16:00 UK) until 13 September at 23:59 PT (07:59 UK on 14 September).
- PlayStation: with PS Plus, until 14 September at 10:00 PT (18:00 UK).
2K says that if you buy any edition on the same platform when the free period ends, you keep your progress and your loot. So play on the platform you'd actually buy it on.
Steam reviews are Mixed, with 33,833 positive out of 57,344, or 59%, while Metacritic has it at 82. With opinion that split, use the free hours to see which side you land on before paying.

The Bounty Pack Bundle in the Deluxe covers the reward packs released after launch: new zones with missions and a boss, Vault Cards with cosmetics, legendary gear and vehicles. The Vault Hunter Pack that the Super Deluxe adds on top brings two new playable Vault Hunters, two story packs with their own campaign, two new map regions, plus gear and cosmetics. The Ornate Order Pack is cosmetic only.
How much each upgrade costs
With Steam keys, fees included, moving from Standard to Deluxe costs €10.66 more. From Deluxe to Super Deluxe is another €12.80, and the full jump from Standard to Super Deluxe comes to €23.46.
The last step is the interesting one. On its own, the Vault Hunter Pack costs €34.99 on Steam, no fees. Going from the Deluxe key to the Super Deluxe key gets you that pack for €12.80 extra, and even the whole jump from Standard is €11.53 below what the pack costs by itself.
The Deluxe is harder to judge on paper: it adds more zones, bosses and gear, and the weekend will show you whether you want more of that. Our guide to which Borderlands 3 edition to buy works through a similar choice.
Is Steam's 50% sale the cheapest way to buy it?
Steam has the Standard Edition at €34.99 with no fees, half the €69.99 it normally costs there. The Deluxe and Super Deluxe are also 50% off on Steam, although we don't have those two figures. The Steam sale ends on 24 September at 10:00 PT (18:00 UK). Xbox has the Standard and Super Deluxe reduced until the same time; PlayStation only the Deluxe, until 23 September at 23:59 PT (07:59 UK on 24 September).
Our PC page has 127 live offers from 21 stores, and the Standard Steam key at G2A costs €24.53 with fees (€24.44 before fees) with the coupon GCKG2AU1M4D, €10.46 less than Steam.
The key is a little above its usual level, though: its median is €20.84 and the lowest we've recorded is €18.32, on 9 June, both before fees. Steam itself had it at €34.99 in late June and €49.99 at the end of July.
A few offers are best avoided. The cheapest Steam gift, at K4G, is €39.84 with fees, more than Steam charges. The Epic key at Green Man Gaming is €69.99 with no fees, full price. And the shared Steam account at Difmark for €15.91 with fees logs you into someone else's profile: the game isn't yours, you can lose access, and because your free weekend progress is tied to your own Steam account, it won't come with you.
On Xbox, the cheapest Standard Xbox key is €25.00 with fees at Eneba, the Deluxe €50.49 at Gamivo and the Super Deluxe €58.03 at Instant Gaming, with fees. Shared accounts from €12.58, no fees, carry the same drawbacks. See our Borderlands 4 for Xbox page.
Which edition to buy after the free weekend
If you just want to finish the campaign, the Standard key at €24.53 with fees is enough.
If you already suspect you'll be playing for months, the Super Deluxe at €47.99 with fees at Eneba is where the numbers look best, since the Vault Hunter Pack alone costs more on Steam than the whole upgrade from Standard. The Deluxe at €35.19 with fees fits the player who wants the Bounty Packs but isn't interested in two extra Vault Hunters.
