It's Halloween tomorrow, and if your PS4 is still plugged in under the telly, you don't need a new console to get properly scared. A lot of the best psychological horror of the last ten years came out on it, and every game here also runs on a PS5. We've picked fifteen: games where you hide in a locker while something hunts you, a few that mess with your head through the story, some indies that look like they belong on the original PlayStation, and a pair you can play with friends.

How we chose them: we started from the PS4 games in our catalogue that had offers in stock this morning and kept the ones that are genuinely psychological horror. Anything we could only find as an account didn't make the cut. Review scores come from Steam, for the PC version (share of positive reviews and how many there are); where we don't have that data, there's no score. Every price includes whatever the store charges as a payment fee, so it's what you actually pay.

PlayStation Store, a disc, or someone else's account

For nearly every game below there are three ways in. The simplest is the PlayStation Store: the game lands on your account, there's no payment fee, and for most of this list it's the option we'd point you to. The second is a physical copy, which on Amazon is sometimes cheaper than the digital version, and is yours for as long as you keep the disc.

The third is accounts, and there are plenty of them for PS4. You're paying for the login of another person's PlayStation account that already owns the game. You play by signing in with it, but the game never moves to your own account, and if the seller takes the account back, it's gone. That's why they're so cheap. Outlast 2 is €19.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store, while Difmark's account is €6.80 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€7.11 with fees). It isn't the same thing, so we recommend the official store or a disc and only quote account prices for reference. This morning none of these fifteen had PSN codes at the key stores.

Run and hide: Outlast, Outlast 2, Alien: Isolation and Amnesia: Rebirth

Outlast 2 drops you in the Arizona desert with a camcorder and nothing else. Blake Langermann is looking for his wife in a village run by a cult that's waiting for the end of the world, and all you can do is run, hide in barrels and keep an eye on the night-vision battery. It's longer and nastier than the first game, and with 90% of 54,710 Steam reviews positive (PC version), it's one of the best-rated on this list. The PlayStation Store has it for €19.99 (no fees). If you want to track the price or catch a PSN code when one turns up, head to the page to buy Outlast 2 key.

Outlast is where Red Barrels started: Mount Massive Asylum, a journalist called Miles Upshur who went poking around where he shouldn't, and the same rule of no weapons. Get under a bed and hope for the best. We don't have a Steam score for this one. It's €13.29 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store; Difmark's account is €7.13 with Gocdkeys (€7.45 with fees).

Alien: Isolation may well be the best game ever made from the films. Amanda Ripley arrives on Sevastopol station looking for answers about her mother and finds a single xenomorph that can't be killed. The motion tracker beeps, something moves in the vents, and every corridor takes forever. No Steam score from us here. On the PlayStation Store it's €10.49 (no fees), barely more than the Difmark account at €8.39 with Gocdkeys (€8.77 with fees), so there's little reason to go for the account.

Amnesia: Rebirth is from Frictional Games, the studio behind SOMA. Tasi wakes up in the Algerian desert after a plane crash, and the dark gets to her: stay too long without light and her fear builds until things start to go wrong. We don't have a Steam score for it. It's the cheapest game here by a distance, at €5.69 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

Resident Evil 7, MADiSON and Martha Is Dead: first-person and family trouble

Resident Evil 7 was Capcom switching to first person. Ethan Winters goes to a Louisiana farmhouse looking for his wife and ends up at the mercy of the Bakers, the most unhinged family the series has. There are guns, but for the first few hours they barely help. On PS4 you can play the whole thing in PS VR if you still have the headset. 95% of 89,396 Steam reviews are positive (PC version). This morning we didn't have it on the PlayStation Store, so the cheapest copy you'd own outright was the disc on Amazon UK at €23.80 (no fees). The Difmark account is €8.39 with Gocdkeys (€8.77 with fees).

MADiSON comes from Bloodious Games in Argentina and it is genuinely frightening. Luca wakes up locked inside his grandfather's house holding an instant camera, and the photos you take change what's around you. Puzzles and jump scares, very much in the spirit of P.T., with 87% of 3,062 reviews positive. The physical Possessed Edition is €29.75 (no fees) on Amazon UK, a bit under the €34.99 (no fees) the PlayStation Store asks.

Martha Is Dead is set in Tuscany during the Second World War. Giulia finds her twin sister Martha drowned in the lake and takes her place. What follows is a slow, unsettling psychological thriller built around an old film camera, with some scenes that are hard to watch, so it isn't for everyone. We don't have its Steam score. €39.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store, or €27.29 (no fees) for the disc on Amazon Spain.

Old-school survival horror: SIGNALIS, Crow Country, Tormented Souls and Project Zero

SIGNALIS was made by a two-person studio, rose-engine, and it's the standout of the whole list. Elster, an android, is searching for someone in a frozen mining facility while her memory comes apart. Six inventory slots, scarce ammo, save rooms, and a story you won't fully get the first time round, much like early Silent Hill. 96% of its 31,353 reviews are positive. It's €19.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

Crow Country looks like a lost PS1 game. Mara Forest sneaks into a closed-down theme park to find out what happened to its owner, and the things wandering around inside aren't staff. It's short, the puzzles are clever, and it has the best score on the list: 97% of 7,943 reviews. €9.49 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

Tormented Souls goes even further back: fixed camera angles, doors that creak open in a little cutscene, and a hospital packed with keys and mechanisms. Caroline Walker is looking for two missing twins and wakes up in a bathtub missing an eye. No Steam score from us. The disc is €12.82 (no fees) on Amazon UK; digital is €19.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

Fatal Frame / Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water is Koei Tecmo's ghost series. No weapons, just the Camera Obscura, which you use to photograph spirits and drive them off. Mount Hikami, with its woods and its lake where people go to die, does a lot with very little. 82% of 5,462 reviews are positive. €27.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store, or €38.49 (no fees) for the Deluxe Edition.

Got just one evening? Little Nightmares and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus

Little Nightmares is done in an afternoon. Six, a small girl in a yellow raincoat, tries to escape the Maw, a vessel where huge, bloated adults cook and eat non-stop. Nobody says a word, you work everything out from what you see, and it stays with you afterwards. 94% of 52,384 reviews are positive. It wasn't on the PlayStation Store in our comparison this morning; the Complete Edition on disc, with the extra chapters included, is €17.27 (no fees) on Amazon Germany. Accounts start at €4.16 with Gocdkeys (€4.35 with fees) at Difmark.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus is the odd one out. It looks like a cheerful visual novel about a high-school poetry club with four girls in it, and you're better off knowing nothing more than that. It warns you at the start that it deals with disturbing themes, and it means it. The Plus version adds side stories. We don't have its Steam score. €9.36 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

Something to play with friends?

Supermassive's Dark Pictures games are interactive horror films where your choices decide who makes it to morning. There's a couch mode where you pass the pad around, and an online mode for two, each playing their own character.

Little Hope strands four students and their teacher in a fog-bound town whose witch trials start replaying in front of them. It's the most psychological of the anthology. No Steam score from us. €9.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

Man of Medan came first: a diving trip that ends on board a Second World War ghost ship. It's the patchier of the two, with 76% of 9,321 reviews positive, but it works well in a group. €19.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store.

All fifteen side by side, and which to buy first

Prices from this morning. The last column shows the cheapest copy that stays on your account or your shelf; other people's accounts aren't included. One thing to check: for some of these games, the PlayStation Store page we link to is the PS5 version, so make sure on the store that it includes the PS4 game before you pay.

Short on cash, Amnesia: Rebirth at €5.69 (no fees) and Doki Doki Literature Club Plus at €9.36 (no fees) are hard to argue with. And for a night in with mates, Little Hope. On PS5? We've also rounded up the best psychological horror games on PS5.

Prices checked on the morning of 30 October.
