Halloween is two weeks away and PS5 owners have more choice than ever if they want to spend it running from the dead. We took the PS5 games that Steam tags as Zombies, kept the ones on Gocdkeys with offers in stock this morning, dropped the ones where the dead are just set dressing, and ended up with fifteen: big story games, co-op shooters, open worlds, a Call of Duty mode and one tower defense game you can play with your kids.

A note on scores: PS5 games don't have a public player rating we can quote, so the score next to each game is the Steam rating of its PC version. It's the same game in almost every case, but bear that in mind. Every price is from this morning, with the store's payment fees added, and the format is always spelled out.

Accounts, PSN codes and the PlayStation Store: what each price means

On PS5 the cheapest offer is almost always an account. Only a handful of games on this list had a real PSN code in stock this morning, so it's worth knowing what you're paying for:

  • Account: GamesPSN, Key4Games, Difmark, Kinguin and G2A sell you the login for a PSN account that already owns the game. You sign in on your console, set it as your primary PS5 for that account, download the game and then play it from your own profile. The purchase isn't in your name, and if the seller ever takes the account back, the game goes with it. Each store has its own instructions; our guide to PSN keys and accounts explains the usual steps.
  • PSN code: you redeem it on your own account and the game is yours for good. Region matters: European codes work on European accounts.
  • PlayStation Store: Sony's official price, with no fees. We quote it so you can see how much an account actually saves you.

An account and a code are different products, so we don't put one against the other. When a game has both, you get both prices.

Sony's own: The Last of Us and Days Gone

The Last of Us Part I is the PS5 remake of Naughty Dog's game: Joel smuggles fourteen-year-old Ellie across a United States overrun by the infected, people turned by a fungus rather than a virus. Purists will tell you they aren't zombies. The clickers, who hunt you by sound, will make you forget the distinction quickly. Steam: Very Positive, 85% of 111,832 reviews. GamesPSN sells the account for €11.05 with coupon GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), against €79.99 on the PlayStation Store. If you want it on your own account, Instant Gaming has a European PSN code for €67.02 (no fees). We already covered it in our list of post-apocalyptic games on PS5, along with Dead Island 2 and Dying Light: The Beast.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered picks up a few years later with Ellie on a revenge trip to Seattle, and the remaster adds No Return, a roguelike survival mode with random encounters. Very Positive, 91% of 57,803. The GamesPSN account costs €5.96 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), the cheapest big game on the list; the PlayStation Store charges €49.99.

Then there's the one we'd recommend if you only buy one game from this guide. In Days Gone Remastered you're Deacon St. John, a biker in post-outbreak Oregon, and the Freakers come in hordes of hundreds that pour through canyons and sawmills. Taking one down with traps, explosives and a full tank of fuel is one of the best moments any zombie game has to offer. The remaster came out for PS5 in April last year and adds Horde Assault, an arcade mode where you survive bigger and bigger waves for points, plus Permadeath and Speedrun modes. The original PC version scores Very Positive on Steam, 93% of 117,912 reviews.

The PlayStation Store still sells it for €49.99 (no fees). There are no PSN codes in stock, but the GamesPSN account costs €7.54 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), and Key4Games has it for €12.35 with GOCDKEYS15 (€13.16 with fees). These are the five cheapest offers this morning if you want to buy Days Gone Remastered key:

And this is what customers of those stores say on Trustpilot:

Resident Evil: back to Raccoon City

Resident Evil 3 is Capcom's remake of the PlayStation classic. Jill Valentine tries to get out of Raccoon City as it falls, with Nemesis, a bioweapon in a trench coat, following her across the city. It's short, five or six hours, and moves much faster than Resident Evil 2. Very Positive, 84% of 127,915. The Key4Games account is €6.57 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.12 with fees), and the PlayStation Store has it for €14.41 (no fees).

Resident Evil Requiem came out in February and has the best Steam score on this list: Overwhelmingly Positive, 96% of 187,690. You play as Grace Ashcroft, an FBI analyst investigating deaths linked to Raccoon City survivors, in slow, tense survival horror sections, and as Leon Kennedy in sections that lean much more on action. The story ends up back in Raccoon City, with plenty of zombies along the way. The GamesPSN account costs €12.25 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), compared with €79.99 on the PlayStation Store or €65.99 (no fees) for the disc at Media Markt.

Open worlds full of the dead: Dead Island 2 and Dying Light

Dead Island 2 takes place in a quarantined Los Angeles, and its strength is melee combat: the game shows exactly where each blow lands, and a zombie can lose an arm, a jaw or most of its skin depending on the weapon. It's not a very serious game and it doesn't try to be. Mostly Positive, 77% of 30,303. The Key4Games account is €6.86 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.42 with fees). For a European PSN code, Gameseal asks €33.49 with coupon SEAL17CKD (€37.65 with fees).

Dying Light 2 is about parkour: you run across the rooftops of Villedor by day and avoid the streets at night, when the infected become much more aggressive. It's a long game and the city takes a while to open up. Mostly Positive, 79% of 220,915. Stock is thin: only G2A had an account this morning, €6.75 with coupon GCKG2AC9Q3M (€7.04 with fees).

Dying Light: The Beast brings back Kyle Crane, the hero of the first game, to a rural valley called Castor Woods, and lets him turn into a beast in the middle of a fight. It's shorter and more focused than Dying Light 2, and players liked it better: Very Positive, 86% of 73,438. The GamesPSN account costs €12.05 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees); the PlayStation Store asks €34.99.

Four friends against the horde: Back 4 Blood, World War Z and Toxic Commando

Back 4 Blood was made by Turtle Rock, the studio behind Left 4 Dead, and it shows: four survivors crossing a map from safe room to safe room. The twist is a deck of cards that changes your character and the director's rules. Steam players are split, Mixed with 69% of 73,537, partly because new content stopped coming early, but it's still the closest thing to Left 4 Dead on PS5. It's also the cheapest game here: the Key4Games account costs €2.67 with GOCDKEYS15 (€3.04 with fees), and the PlayStation Store sells it for €6.99 (no fees).

World War Z Aftermath is about the swarms from the film: hundreds of zombies climbing on top of each other to get up a wall. Aftermath is the complete edition, with first-person mode and the Rome and Kamchatka episodes. On Steam the base game, World War Z, is Very Positive, 82% of 33,150. The Key4Games account is €9.53 with GOCDKEYS15 (€10.21 with fees); the PlayStation Store asks €39.99.

John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is the newest, out in March. It comes from Saber Interactive, the same studio as World War Z, and plays like a B-movie: four mercenaries, vehicles, a lot of shooting and hordes of infected spawned by a creature from underground. Mostly Positive, 73% of 7,331. Here the account barely saves anything: €14.44 with GOCDKEYS15 at Key4Games (€15.34 with fees), against €19.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store or €19.90 (no fees) for the disc at Media Markt.

Zombies as a mode or as a joke: Call of Duty, Dead Rising and Plants vs. Zombies

Call of Duty is on this list for one reason: the Zombies mode, the round-based co-op that started in World at War. In Black Ops 6 it returned to classic round-based maps after a few years of experiments, and that's why we picked it; the campaign and multiplayer are the usual Call of Duty. The GamesPSN account costs €5.09 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees). If you'd rather have a code, Cdkeys Com sells a European PSN code for €41.59 (no fees). Black Ops Cold War is the previous round-based Zombies, with Die Maschine and the more open Outbreak mode, and its Key4Games account is €8.02 with GOCDKEYS15 (€8.63 with fees). We don't give a score for either: the Steam rating of Black Ops 6 mixes complaints about multiplayer and the launcher, and says little about Zombies, and Cold War isn't on Steam.

Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster remakes Capcom's game in which photojournalist Frank West has 72 hours in a mall full of zombies and can fight them with almost anything on the shelves. The remaster adds autosave and lets you move while aiming. Very Positive, 80% of 4,141. The Key4Games account is €16.18 with GOCDKEYS15 (€17.16 with fees), a long way below the €49.99 the PlayStation Store asks. If you'd rather wait, set a price alert for Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster and we'll email you when it drops.

Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted is the HD version of PopCap's tower defense game: you plant sunflowers and peashooters on your lawn to stop the zombies from reaching the house. It's the only one here suitable for children. Mixed on Steam, 67% of 7,626, with complaints mostly about the changes from the original. The Key4Games account costs €7.94 with GOCDKEYS15 (€8.55 with fees), and the PlayStation Store has it for €11.99 (no fees), so the gap is small.

If you've played none of them, start with Days Gone Remastered: the account costs €7.54 (no fees) and the hordes are reason enough. For a night of horror, Resident Evil Requiem is the best-rated game here. With three friends, World War Z Aftermath or Back 4 Blood, which costs €3.04 with fees as an account. And if you also play on a computer, we've done the same with the best zombie games on PC.

Prices checked on the morning of 19 October.
