Halloween falls on Saturday, so this is the week to play something that keeps you awake. We've picked sixteen survival horror games for PC: this year's new Resident Evil, a pair of remakes, indies that look like they came off a PS1 disc, and a few odd ones that don't fit anywhere else.
How we chose them: we started from the PC games Steam tags as "Survival Horror", kept the ones with offers in stock on Gocdkeys this morning, and picked the ones that best represent the genre. Review figures are the share of positive Steam reviews across all languages. For each offer you get the price with the coupon and, in brackets, what you actually pay once the store adds its payment fee.
Before you buy: what each type of offer gets you
Most offers here are Steam keys. You redeem the code on your own Steam account and the game stays in your library for good. There are three exceptions. Dead Space activates on the EA App, not Steam. One of the SIGNALIS offers is a Microsoft Store key that works on both PC and Xbox, and for SOMA the cheapest option is a Steam Gift, which also lands in your library.
You'll also see a lot of accounts. A Steam account gives you the username and password of somebody else's Steam account that already owns the game. You can play it, but it never enters your own library, and if the seller takes the account back, the game goes with it. That's why accounts are so cheap: Key4Games sells one for Resident Evil Requiem at €12.42 with GOCDKEYS15 (€13.23 with fees). It isn't the same thing as owning the game, so throughout this list we compare keys with keys.
Big-budget horror: Resident Evil Requiem, Dead Space, The Callisto Protocol and The Last of Us Part I
Resident Evil Requiem is the genre's big release of the year. It's the ninth main entry in CAPCOM's series, it came out on 27 February, and Steam players have been generous: 95% of 109,616 reviews are positive. It's also the most expensive game on this list. The cheapest Steam key is at Gamivo for €30.36 with the GCDKGamivo coupon (€32.41 with fees).
The Dead Space remake is Motive's rebuild, for EA, of the Visceral Games classic. You play Isaac Clarke, an engineer sent to the mining ship USG Ishimura, which turns out to be overrun by necromorphs. Headshots won't do much here. You cut off limbs instead, and the whole game is designed around that. 90% of its 64,159 Steam reviews are positive.
Check the platform before you pay: the cheapest key is for the EA App, so you activate and launch the game there rather than on Steam. Gamivo has it for €12.91 with the GCDKGamivo coupon (€14.35 with fees). These are the offers if you want to buy Dead Space key for the EA App:
The Callisto Protocol comes from Striking Distance Studios, founded by Glen Schofield, one of the co-creators of Dead Space, and the family resemblance is obvious. You're locked up in Black Iron, a prison on one of Jupiter's moons, and most fights happen at arm's length. It had a rocky launch, partly because of how it ran on PC, and its Steam reviews sit at "Mixed": 66% of 35,219. At €5.54 with the SEAL17CKD coupon at Gameseal (€6.36 with fees), though, it's a cheap gamble if you liked Dead Space.
The Last of Us Part I is Naughty Dog's remade version of Joel and Ellie's journey across a United States wrecked by a Cordyceps fungus pandemic. The story matters more than the scares, although the clickers still get under your skin. 85% of 67,457 Steam reviews are positive, and Gameseal has the cheapest key at €18.23 with SEAL17CKD (€20.49 with fees).
Old-school survival horror: fixed cameras, tight inventories and a PS1 look
SIGNALIS has the best Steam score on this list, with 96% of 31,353 reviews positive. It's made by rose-engine, a two-person studio from Germany, and it wears its influences openly: a top-down camera, PS1-era graphics, a six-slot inventory that makes you think twice about every pickup, and a sci-fi story with echoes of Silent Hill and Evangelion. You play Elster, a Replika (an android) searching for her partner.
You can buy it two ways. A Microsoft Store key, valid on PC and Xbox, costs €12.22 at G2A with the GCKG2AM4E7H coupon (€12.51 with fees). If you'd rather have it on Steam, Gamivo sells a Steam Gift for €12.23 with GCDKGamivo (€13.65 with fees), which is €1.14 more.
Tormented Souls 2 brings back the fixed camera angles of the early Resident Evil games. Dual Effect's sequel stars Caroline Walker and has just turned one: it came out on 23 October last year. 88% of its 1,745 Steam reviews are positive. The cheapest key is at G2A for €13.37 with GCKG2AM4E7H (€13.66 with fees).
Hollowbody is British survival horror in the Silent Hill mould, set in an abandoned city. Headware Games is just one person, Nathan Hamley. 84% of its 1,478 reviews are positive, and the best way to get your own copy today is Steam itself, at €9.89 (no fees).
FATAL FRAME / PROJECT ZERO: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is KOEI TECMO's remaster of a game that originally came out only in Japan, on the Wii. On Rogetsu Island your only weapon against ghosts is the Camera Obscura, so you fight by taking photos. 89% of 1,609 reviews are positive. It's one of the pricier picks: Instant Gaming sells the Deluxe Edition for €28.19 (no fees), which still undercuts the standard edition on Steam at €29.99 (no fees).
The cheapest of the lot: Darkwood, Pathologic 2, Little Nightmares and Prey
Darkwood is the cheapest game here. HRKGame has it for €1.53 with the Gocdkeys12 coupon (€1.93 with fees). It's a top-down game from Acid Wizard Studio, a Polish team. By day you scavenge in a forest that keeps closing in on you; by night you barricade yourself in and hold on. 94% of 22,514 Steam reviews are positive.
Pathologic 2 isn't for everyone, and it's worth knowing that before you buy. Ice-Pick Lodge casts you as a doctor in a steppe town during an epidemic, with twelve days to work with and hunger, thirst and the clock all against you. The reviews are excellent anyway, 92% positive out of 9,627. Kinguin has it for €1.82 with OCTGOC10 (€2.31 with fees).
Little Nightmares is the short one. You guide Six, the girl in the yellow raincoat, through the Maw using platforming and stealth rather than weapons. Tarsier Studios made it and Bandai Namco published it. 94% of 52,384 reviews are positive, and Gamivo sells it for €2.27 with GCDKGamivo (€3.10 with fees).
Prey, from Arkane Studios, is more of an immersive sim than straight survival horror, but it earns its spot. As Morgan Yu you're stuck on the Talos I space station with the Typhon, aliens that disguise themselves as ordinary objects, so the mug on that desk might be a mimic. 90% of 37,972 reviews are positive. K4G sells the Deluxe Edition for Steam at €2.75 with GCDK14DEAL (€3.38 with fees).
Psychological horror: SOMA, Visage, Song of Horror and ROUTINE
SOMA is by Frictional Games, the studio behind Amnesia. It's set in PATHOS-II, an underwater research station, and it scares you with ideas more than with jump scares. 95% of 47,273 reviews are positive. The cheapest option is a Steam Gift at Gamivo for €4.45 with GCDKGamivo (€5.36 with fees).
Visage, by SadSquare Studio, is first-person horror set in a haunted house, and plenty of players see it as the spiritual successor to P.T. 84% of its 8,824 reviews are positive. The key is €12.93 at Gamivo with GCDKGamivo (€14.38 with fees). If that's more than you want to spend, set a price alert and we'll tell you when it drops.
Song of Horror comes from Protocol Games, a Spanish studio. Any character can die for good, and the Presence hunting you reacts to what you do. 80% of 1,944 reviews are positive (Complete Edition). Steam sells it for €4.49 (no fees), less than the Complete Edition at Kinguin, which costs €4.95 with OCTGOC10 (€5.69 with fees).
ROUTINE spent many years in development at Lunar Software before it finally came out on 4 December last year. It's an abandoned moon base with an 80s sci-fi look and no HUD at all. 91% of its 7,667 reviews are positive, and K4G has the key at €8.61 with the GCDK14DEAL coupon (€9.74 with fees).

Which one should you play first?
If you're only buying one and money isn't a concern, go for Resident Evil Requiem. Fans of the classic style should start with SIGNALIS, the best-rated game here. On a tight budget, Darkwood (€1.93 with fees) or Pathologic 2 (€2.31 with fees), though the second one asks for patience. For action with your scares, Dead Space is the safe pick and The Callisto Protocol the cheap one.
