On PC, a good metroidvania rarely costs full price for long: somebody is always reselling a Steam key. PS5 works differently. Hardly anyone resells PlayStation codes, so for most of these games the choice comes down to paying Sony, hunting for a disc, or logging into somebody else's account.
Our catalogue has 86 PS5 games carrying Steam's metroidvania tag and at least one live offer. These are the 15 we'd recommend, plus one DLC. Hollow Knight: Silksong, Blasphemous 2 and Nine Sols are missing on purpose: they already appear in our guide to the best souls-like games on PS5, and there's no need to cover them twice.
A word on those accounts, because they're the cheapest offer on almost every game below. A shared account means signing in with the PSN login of someone who already owns the game. It never lands in your own profile, and the seller can take the access away. We quote the figure because it's there, but what we recommend is a copy that stays yours: the PSN Key from PlayStation Store, or the physical disc.
Two more things. Steam doesn't collect console reviews, so every verdict quoted here is for the PC version on Steam. And all prices were read on 13 September at 05:50 UTC; they move, so check the live offers before paying.
Start here: The Lost Crown, ANIMAL WELL and Dead Cells
Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is the one with a major publisher behind it. Ubisoft Montpellier casts you as Sargon, one of the Immortals, on Mount Qaf, a place cursed by time, and his time powers are as useful for getting around as they are in a fight. One small idea more studios should copy: you can pin screenshots to the map, so that ledge you couldn't reach yet has a picture attached. Steam rates it Very Positive (5,649 positive, 1,076 negative) and it holds an 85 Metascore.
It's also the rare case where the box beats the download. PlayStation Store asks €29.99 (PSN Key), no fees, while PCcomponentes has the physical copy at €25.63, no fees. The shared accounts go far lower, €7.54 at GamesPSN with no fees and €7.55 at Difmark with coupon Gocdkeys (€7.89 with fees), but neither is a copy of your own. Check whether the disc is still cheaper before you buy Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown key from Sony's store.
ANIMAL WELL comes from the other end of the industry. Billy Basso made it practically on his own, with Bigmode publishing. You're a small creature exploring a dark well full of animals, and there's almost no combat. Progress comes from toys: a bubble wand, a yo-yo, a frisbee, each of which turns out to be a way of reading the map differently. The secrets go several layers deeper than most players will ever dig, and they were designed for the community to crack together. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam (21,650 to 1,139), and its 90 is the highest Metascore in this article.
PlayStation Store has it at €24.99 (PSN Key), no fees. A Difmark shared account costs €14.69 with coupon Gocdkeys (€15.35 with fees). Kinguin's account is €22.84 with coupon SEPGOC10, which becomes €25.01 with fees: two cents more than Sony for a login you don't own. The physical copy on Amazon DE is €48.20, no fees. If you're about to buy ANIMAL WELL key for PS5, the €24.99 PSN Key on the official store is the one to take.
Then there's Dead Cells, which bends the genre. Motion Twin built a roguelite on a metroidvania skeleton: every death resets the castle, but the runes you find open paths for good. Nothing else here comes close on review volume, with 151,440 positive and 4,684 negative on Steam for an Overwhelmingly Positive verdict, plus an 89 Metascore.
PlayStation Store: €24.99 (PSN Key), no fees. Difmark's shared account: €10.49 with coupon Gocdkeys (€10.96 with fees). Amazon FR sells a bundle PSN Key for €27.98, no fees, which is more than the standalone game on Sony's store.
Already own it? Return to Castlevania is the official crossover with Konami's series, rated Very Positive on Steam from 753 positive and 123 negative. The DLC costs €9.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees, or €5.87 with coupon Gocdkeys (€6.13 with fees) as a Difmark shared account.
Hand-drawn worlds and anime-style heroines
ENDER MAGNOLIA: Bloom in the Mist is Adglobe's follow-up to Ender Lilies, published by Binary Haze Interactive. Lilac is an Attuner who rescues homunculi, and the ones she saves go on to fight at her side. Steam players are close to unanimous: Overwhelmingly Positive, 16,254 positive against 855 negative.
The €24.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees, is also the cheapest way to own it: the physical edition on Amazon FR costs €58.90, no fees. The Difmark shared account is €11.54 with coupon Gocdkeys (€12.06 with fees).
Afterimage has the oddest pricing in the article. Aurogon Shanghai's game, published by Maximum Entertainment, is hand-drawn, with a very large world, skill trees and several endings, and Steam rates it Mostly Positive (5,457 to 1,450). The standard edition is €24.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees. Amazon FR, meanwhile, sells the Deluxe edition PSN Key for €13.52, no fees, just over half of what Sony wants for the standard one.
There's also a Difmark shared account at €4.19 with coupon Gocdkeys (€4.38 with fees). With a Deluxe you actually own sitting at €13.52, we'd skip it.
Momodora: Moonlit Farewell is the fifth Momodora, made by Bombservice and published by PLAYISM. You play Momo Reinol, a priestess who fights with a maple leaf and a bow. Very Positive on Steam (2,773 positive, 274 negative), Metascore 84. It's one of the few games here with a reseller PSN Key: Kinguin has it at €10.89 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€12.11 with fees), under the €16.99 (PSN Key), no fees, on PlayStation Store. A Difmark shared account goes for €7.10 with coupon Gocdkeys (€7.42 with fees).
Castlevania's heirs, from gothic gore to two-player co-op
The bloodiest of the lot is The Last Faith, from Kumi Souls Games and Playstack. It's gothic, with gory executions, firearms and magic, and it takes as much from Bloodborne as from Castlevania. Very Positive on Steam, 3,863 to 791.
We found just two offers. PlayStation Store sells it for €26.99 (PSN Key), no fees; Difmark has a shared account for €5.70 with coupon Gocdkeys (€5.96 with fees). A gap of about €21 is tempting, but the cheap one still isn't a copy. With so few sellers, a price alert on The Last Faith is worth setting.
Chronicles of the Wolf stays closer to the source. Migami Games, with PQube publishing, made a direct descendant of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Steam says Very Positive, although from a small sample of 340 positive and 75 negative reviews, and Metacritic gives it a 75. It's €19.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees; the physical copy on Amazon FR costs €28.48, no fees; and a Difmark shared account is €12.59 with coupon Gocdkeys (€13.16 with fees).
In 9 Years of Shadows, Halberd Studios (published by indie.io) pairs Europa, a halberd-wielding warrior, with Apino, a ghost teddy bear. The armours you pick up change your abilities. Mostly Positive on Steam, 1,808 to 480. €19.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees, or €7.55 with coupon Gocdkeys (€7.89 with fees) for a Difmark shared account.
We'll be upfront about Gal Guardians: Servants of the Dark: at Mixed, with 363 positive and 196 negative, it has the weakest Steam reviews on this page. Inti Creates made a demon castle in the Castlevania mould, with two protagonists you swap between and co-op for two players. If you want a metroidvania to play with someone else, that's the reason to pick it.
It's also the only game here where every offer sits above €17. PlayStation Store asks €29.99 (PSN Key), no fees; Amazon DE has the physical copy at €29.23, no fees; and the Difmark shared account costs €16.37 with coupon Gocdkeys (€17.11 with fees).
Fists, bullets, card spells and combos
F.I.S.T.: Forged in Shadow Torch gives you Rayton, a rabbit with a giant mechanical fist, loose in a dieselpunk city occupied by an army of machines. TiGames developed it and Astrolabe Games publishes. Very Positive on Steam (5,718 / 931), Metascore 81. At €14.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees, it's one of the cheaper official prices here. Difmark's shared account is €8.39 with coupon Gocdkeys (€8.77 with fees). G2A's account costs €13.63 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€13.92 with fees), which saves about a euro on a login you don't own.
Awaken: Astral Blade, from Dark Pigeon Games and ESDigital Games, is an action metroidvania built around combos, rated Very Positive on Steam from 923 positive and 202 negative.
It shares the cheapest official price on the page with the Dead Cells DLC: €9.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees. Difmark's shared account costs €8.39 with coupon Gocdkeys (€8.77 with fees), so owning it outright costs €1.22 more. Kinguin also has a PSN Key at €18.90 with coupon SEPGOC10, which comes to €20.75 with fees, roughly double what Sony charges.
The Knight Witch is the one where you fly. Super Mega Team made it and Team17 publishes it: you shoot your way through bullet-hell fights, and spells come as cards. Mostly Positive on Steam (461 to 179), Metascore 79. In proportion, no other game here puts a login this far below a copy of your own: €19.99 on PlayStation Store (PSN Key), no fees, against €3.35 with coupon Gocdkeys (€3.50 with fees) for a Difmark shared account.
Mandragora: Whispers of the Witch Tree is Primal Game Studio's 2.5D dark fantasy, published by Knights Peak, with RPG classes, skill trees and demanding combat. Steam: Mostly Positive, 2,261 to 753. On PlayStation Store it's the most expensive game here, €39.99 (PSN Key), no fees, which makes the physical copy on Amazon FR at €24.99, no fees, a straight fifteen euros saved. Two shared accounts sit under that: Difmark at €15.53 with coupon Gocdkeys (€16.23 with fees) and Kinguin at €21.11 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€23.14 with fees).
Does TUNIC count as a metroidvania?
Strictly speaking, TUNIC belongs more to the Zelda school. A little fox, an isometric camera, and hints that arrive as pages of an instruction manual written in a made-up language. It earns its place here because it shares the core of the genre: going back to places you've already seen once you understand something new. TUNIC Team made it, Finji publishes it, Steam rates it Very Positive (15,172 to 1,500) and Metacritic gives it an 85.
Sony and the resellers are close on this one. PlayStation Store charges €14.99 (PSN Key), no fees. A Difmark shared account is €12.59 with coupon Gocdkeys (€13.16 with fees), a saving of €1.83. Kinguin's account, at €15.80 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€17.41 with fees), costs more than the official store.

The accounts undercut Sony most on The Knight Witch (€3.50 with fees for the login, €19.99 for the PSN Key with no fees), Afterimage against its official standard edition (€4.38 with fees versus €24.99 for the PSN Key, no fees) and The Last Faith (€5.96 with fees versus €26.99 for the PSN Key, no fees). On Awaken: Astral Blade and TUNIC the difference is €1.22 and €1.83, small enough that paying for your own copy barely needs thinking about.
If you only buy one, The Lost Crown on disc and ANIMAL WELL from PlayStation Store are where we'd put the money first. Then Dead Cells, if dying and starting over sounds like fun, and Awaken: Astral Blade if you'd rather keep it under €10 with a PSN Key.
