Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade costs €49.99 on the Microsoft Store. This morning the same game is €9.71 with fees as an Xbox code. Dragon Quest XI S shows the catch: the cheapest thing on its page is €2.11, but that is somebody else's account, and the real code costs ten times as much. Xbox finally has a proper JRPG library, and what you pay for it depends a lot on where you buy and in which format.
It wasn't always like this. For years the big Japanese RPGs skipped Microsoft's console. Now Atlus launches Persona and Metaphor on Xbox on day one, Final Fantasy XVI arrived in June last year and the Final Fantasy VII remake followed this January. We've picked twelve games, checked each one on Gocdkeys this morning, and for every one we tell you why it's here and whether today is the day to buy. Playing somewhere else? We have the same guide for PS5 and Nintendo Switch.
Xbox Keys, regions and accounts: read this before you pay
The format we recommend is always the Xbox Key, a code you redeem on the console or at microsoft.com/redeem. Once redeemed, the game sits on your Microsoft account for good. When an offer says "PC / Xbox Key", the same code also works on Windows.
Region matters more on Xbox than anywhere else. Codes are sold by zone (Europe, United States, UK, Global), and a code from the wrong zone may refuse to activate on your account. Of the twelve offers quoted here, eight are European codes, three are Global and one, Metaphor, is listed as UK. We flag it game by game, but check the region on the store page before you pay.
Then there is the Account. It is cheap because you are not buying the game: you get the login to somebody else's Microsoft account that already owns it. If the seller takes the account back, the game goes with it. We quote the cheapest one so you know what that very low price on the page is. We'd buy the code.
The ratings are Steam user reviews for the PC version, since Xbox has nothing comparable. Microsoft Store prices come from the Spanish store and carry no fees.

Final Fantasy has landed on Xbox: VII Remake and XVI
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
It reached Xbox this January, almost six years after its PlayStation debut. It only covers the Midgar section of the original, stretched into a full game, and the story carries on in Rebirth. Combat is real-time action with a gauge that fills as you fight and lets you slow everything down to pick spells and abilities. Intergrade includes the Yuffie episode. On Steam, 86% of 44,250 reviews are positive.
This is the best buy in the guide. Driffle has the European PC / Xbox Key at €8.99 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€9.71 with fees). Microsoft charges €49.99, five times as much. Difmark sells an Account at €6.38 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€6.67 with fees), but for three euros it makes no sense to give up owning the game. You can buy Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade key from its page at today's price.
Final Fantasy XVI
The Final Fantasy that dropped turns completely. Clive fights in real time, with dodges and combos, in a system designed by Ryota Suzuki, who came from Devil May Cry 5. The Eikon clashes are giant-monster brawls. The story is dark, self-contained and needs no knowledge of the series. If you want a classic party-based RPG, look elsewhere: it sits at 78% of 24,239 reviews on Steam.
Eneba has the European Xbox Key at €16.98 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€18.99 with fees). The Microsoft Store asks €59.99, more than three times that. Difmark's Account is €10.07 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€10.52 with fees), and it is someone else's account.
Atlus and its turn-based heavyweights: Persona 3 Reload, Metaphor, Shin Megami Tensei V
Persona 3 Reload
A remake of the Persona that set the template. You go to school and make friends by day, then climb the floors of Tartarus at night in turn-based fights where hitting an enemy's weakness earns you another action. It's the easiest way into the series because the rough edges of the original are gone. Steam has it at 95% of 44,050 reviews.
Gamivo's European Xbox Key is €16.01 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€17.56 with fees). Microsoft charges €59.99, more than three times as much. Difmark has an Account at €10.07 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€10.52 with fees).
What about Persona 5 Royal? It's on Xbox too and it is still Atlus's best-reviewed game, at 96% of 92,290 Steam reviews. We've already covered it in its own article, so here is just the price: G2A has the European PC / Xbox Key at €14.23 with the coupon GCKG2AW4Z8R (€14.52 with fees). Every other offer is on its Xbox page.
Metaphor: ReFantazio
The latest game from the director of Persona 3, 4 and 5, and this time there is no high school. The king is dead and the throne of a fantasy kingdom is decided by something close to an election. The calendar and the bonds with your companions are still here. The new part is Archetypes, a job system you can spread across the party. Weak enemies can be cut down in real time without starting a battle. 89% of 25,358 reviews on Steam.
Today is not its day. The cheapest PC / Xbox Key is at CJS-CDKeys for €26.84 (no fees), and it is listed as a UK-region code, so make sure the store confirms it activates on your account. Dragon Quest III aside, it is also the most expensive code of the twelve. Microsoft asks €69.99 and Difmark has an Account at €16.79 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€17.55 with fees). We'd set a price alert and wait.
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance
The series Persona grew out of, and a much tougher one. No classes, no friendships. You cross a ruined Tokyo recruiting demons, talking them into joining you mid-fight and fusing them into stronger ones. Vengeance is the expanded edition of a game that first came out only on Switch, and it adds a new story route. 91% of 7,910 Steam reviews are positive.
It's one of the best prices on the list right now. Gamivo's European Xbox Key is €12.79 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€14.23 with fees), less than a quarter of the €59.99 Microsoft charges. Difmark's Account is €10.91 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€11.40 with fees). For less than three euros of difference, get the code.
Dragon Quest on Xbox: start with XI
Dragon Quest XI S
The most traditional JRPG you can play on an Xbox: old-school turns, Akira Toriyama's character designs and a story that asks nothing of you beforehand. The S edition adds the orchestral soundtrack and the option to play the whole thing in 2D, like a Dragon Quest from the nineties. 92% of 10,486 reviews on Steam.
Watch the format here. The cheapest thing on the page is a Difmark Account at €2.02 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€2.11 with fees), which is somebody else's account. The real code costs ten times as much: G2A has the European PC / Xbox Key at €21.68 with the coupon GCKG2AW4Z8R (€21.97 with fees). We don't have the Microsoft Store price for this one to compare against.
Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake
A remake of the game that tells the origin of the Erdrick legend, with pixel characters on 3D backdrops, the HD-2D look Octopath Traveler made popular. You build the party yourself by choosing vocations and can switch them later. The plot is simple and the difficulty spikes now and then. Players like it less than XI: 75% of 4,025 Steam reviews.
It's the most expensive code in the guide. G2A's European PC / Xbox Key is €29.39 with the coupon GCKG2AW4Z8R (€29.68 with fees), and we have no Microsoft Store price to tell you how much that saves. Difmark has an Account at €15.78 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€16.49 with fees), close to half, but it is someone else's account. If you can wait, set an alert at the price you're willing to pay.
Real-time combat: two Tales games and Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
Tales of Arise
The most recent Tales with a brand-new story. Alphen and Shionne come from two worlds, Dahna and Rena, and one has enslaved the other for centuries. Fights are real-time, built on dodging and on combined attacks with your party, and you don't need to have played any other Tales. We don't have its Steam rating. On Metacritic the Xbox Series X version scores 87.
Cheap it isn't. Eneba's Global Xbox Key (the Cross-Gen Bundle, good for Xbox One and Series) is €19.01 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€21.19 with fees), and we have no Microsoft Store price to measure the saving. Difmark sells an Account at €5.03 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€5.26 with fees). That's almost €16 less, for an account that isn't yours. If you're in no hurry, set a price alert.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition
This one has history on the platform. It launched first on Xbox 360 and for years it was the console's go-to JRPG. The Definitive Edition adds what only the Japanese PS3 version had, including Flynn and Patty as playable characters. Yuri Lowell is a grown-up lead who doesn't make speeches, and combat is classic Tales, slower than Arise. 80% of 3,797 reviews on Steam.
Eneba has the European Xbox Key at €6.56 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€7.67 with fees). Microsoft charges €39.98, five times as much. Difmark's Account is €5.46 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€5.71 with fees).
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
CyberConnect2 lets you replay all of Dragon Ball Z, from Raditz's arrival to the Buu saga, with open areas you fly across, side quests and real-time aerial fights. As an RPG it's light. As a way to relive the series with a controller in your hands it works very well: 93% of 43,824 Steam reviews.
Gamivo's Global Xbox Key is €7.55 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€8.80 with fees), less than half the €19.99 the Microsoft Store asks. Difmark's Account: €5.87 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€6.13 with fees).
See all offers for DRAGON BALL Z: KAKAROT →Strategy on a map: Valkyria Chronicles 4 and Triangle Strategy
Valkyria Chronicles 4
SEGA blends turn-based strategy with third-person aiming. You pick a soldier, run them across the map yourself and take the shot yourself. The war is set in a fictional Europe and the whole game looks like a watercolour. 86% of 5,705 reviews on Steam.
Cdkeys sells the European Xbox Key at €5.49 (no fees). Look at the official price, though: the Microsoft Store has it at €5.99, just 50 cents more. If you'd rather buy straight from Microsoft, you lose almost nothing here. Difmark's Account is €3.19 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€3.33 with fees).
See all offers for Valkyria Chronicles 4 →Triangle Strategy
Grid-based tactics in HD-2D from Square Enix and Artdink, which came to Xbox in August last year. Its signature is the Scales of Conviction: at key moments your companions vote on what to do, you try to win them over, and the story branches with the result. There is a lot of talking between battles. If that puts you off, go with Valkyria. 78% of 3,256 Steam reviews.
Instant Gaming has the Global PC / Xbox Key at €21.19 (no fees). Microsoft charges €59.99, nearly three times that. Difmark sells an Account at €12.59 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€13.16 with fees).
Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles belongs in this group too. We've written about it separately, and its offers are on its Xbox page.
What we'd buy this morning and what we'd leave on alert
Four games are under €10 with fees, all four as codes: Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade at €9.71, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot at €8.80, Tales of Vesperia at €7.67 and Valkyria Chronicles 4 at €5.49. Together that's €31.67, less than half of what the Microsoft Store asks for Metaphor alone.
If you want one of the big turn-based games, Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance at €14.23 and Persona 3 Reload at €17.56, both with fees, cost less than a third of the Microsoft Store price. For the second one, head to its page to buy Persona 3 Reload key.
Three we'd leave on alert. Metaphor: ReFantazio, because its cheapest code is a UK-region one. And Tales of Arise and Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, whose codes cost €21.19 and €29.68 with fees and have no Microsoft Store price to compare them with.
Prices checked on the morning of 1 October.
