Farming on PS5 covers a lot more ground than tractors on one side and Stardew Valley on the other. There's a Stone Age clan working out how to plant seeds, a town built on the back of a giant creature that never stops walking, a chemist who picks herbs between patients and a valley full of Disney characters who need someone to water the carrots. A couple of these play like a second job, with machinery and running costs. Others are what you put on when you want an evening without any pressure at all.

To build the list we took the games that Steam tags as Farming Sim on PC, looked up their PS5 versions on Gocdkeys and kept the ones with offers in stock this morning. A few farming games that already have a place in our cozy games list for PS5 are left out; you'll find them at the end. That leaves seventeen. The Steam reviews we quote are for the PC version, because the PlayStation Store doesn't publish user reviews.

PlayStation Store or an account: which one should you buy?

This morning there wasn't a single PSN code from a reseller for any of these games. What we did find were accounts, nearly always from Key4Games, Difmark or GamesPSN, and the PlayStation Store's own price, which is the other way to end up with the game.

  • PlayStation Store: you buy on your own PSN account, the game stays in your library and there's no payment fee. It's usually the dearest option outside a sale.
  • Account: the seller gives you the login of someone else's PSN account that already owns the game. You sign in on your PS5 and download it from there, but the game is never yours: it doesn't reach your library, and if the seller takes the account back, you lose it. Our guide to PSN keys and PSN accounts goes through the risks.

For each game we give the PS Store price and the cheapest account. Account offers come with two figures, the price with the coupon and what you pay once the payment fee is added. When the gap is only a few euros, as with Stardew Valley or Sugardew Island, we'd pay the extra and buy from the store.

Farming Simulator 25, for anyone who wants real machinery

Farming Simulator 25 is the only proper agricultural simulator on this list. GIANTS Software's series treats the farm as a business: you plough, sow, fertilise and harvest with licensed machines from real manufacturers, keep livestock, sell at the right moment and only expand when the numbers add up. This one adds rice and an East Asian map to the usual American and European settings, and you can run a farm with other players online. The first hours go on working out which implement goes on which tractor, and that's part of the appeal. 87% of its 41,179 Steam reviews are positive.

The PS Store sells it for €39.99 (no fees). The cheapest account is at GamesPSN, €10.47 with coupon GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), with Key4Games just behind at €10.59 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.32 with fees). That's about a quarter of the store price, so here the account is tempting, as long as you accept that it isn't yours. These are the offers to buy Farming Simulator 25 for PS5:

A farm, a village and someone to marry: Stardew Valley, Story of Seasons, Harvest Moon, Everafter Falls and SunnySide

Stardew Valley is the one the rest get compared with. You inherit your grandfather's run-down farm outside Pelican Town and decide what to do with your days: crops, animals, fishing, a mine full of monsters, and a town of neighbours you can befriend and eventually marry. Its PC version has 98% positive reviews out of 901,370. On PlayStation there's only the PS4 version, which works on PS5. The PS Store has it for €13.99 (no fees), and Difmark's account costs €7.55 with coupon Gocdkeys (€7.89 with fees). For six euros more it's on your own account for good, so we'd buy it from the store.

Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life is Marvelous's remake of A Wonderful Life, the GameCube game that many fans of the series still rate above all the others. You move to Forgotten Valley to work a small farm, and the game follows your life in chapters: you marry, have a child and watch them grow up. It's slower and more wistful than Stardew. 78% of its 1,204 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €39.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €22.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€24.11 with fees).

Harvest Moon: The Winds of Anthos carries the old name, but since Natsume and Marvelous went their separate ways, Harvest Moon is Natsume's series and the line that started it all continues as Story of Seasons. This one is set in a land whose villages were scattered by a volcanic eruption, and it has a larger open map than the series usually goes for. It's the weakest-rated of the three classics here, 73% positive out of 371 on Steam. It's also the most expensive game on the PS Store here, €49.99 (no fees), against €17.12 with GOCDKEYS15 (€18.15 with fees) for Key4Games' account.

Everafter Falls is a small pixel-art farming game from SquareHusky that sticks closely to the Stardew pattern: fields, a village, neighbours to win over. 86% of its 439 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €19.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €10.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.57 with fees).

SunnySide moves the formula to a farming town in the Japanese countryside, in the present day. Its Steam reviews are Mixed, 67% positive out of 916, so it's one for people who've already played the others. We didn't find it on the PS Store this morning, but the disc is at Amazon UK for €17.90 (no fees), while Key4Games' account costs €16.97 with GOCDKEYS15 (€17.99 with fees). Nine cents more for an account you don't own makes no sense; get the disc.

When the farm is only part of the game: My Time at Sandrock, Potion Permit, Disney Dreamlight Valley and Starsand Island

In My Time at Sandrock, the follow-up to My Time at Portia, you're the new builder in a desert town that's always short of water. Most of your time goes on taking commissions, gathering materials and building machines in your workshop, with a bit of combat in the ruins and plenty of townsfolk to get to know. Crops are there, but they're the side dish. It has 88% positive reviews out of 24,228 on Steam. PS Store: €34.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €17.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€18.89 with fees).

Potion Permit sends you to the town of Moonbury as its new chemist. You examine patients, figure out what's wrong with them, go out to gather ingredients and brew the cure, with your dog for company. The farming tag comes from the gathering and the daily routine more than from any fields. 78% of its 4,417 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €19.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €10.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.57 with fees).

Disney Dreamlight Valley drops you into a valley where Disney and Pixar characters have lost their memories. You grow vegetables, fish, cook and clear the place up so that Mickey, Goofy or WALL-E can move back in, and each one has their own quests. It's the best-rated after Stardew, Roots of Pacha and Farm Together 2, with 92% of 22,317 reviews positive. PS Store: €39.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €22.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€24.11 with fees).

Starsand Island is a 3D island life sim: farming, building, fishing and getting to know the islanders. 76% of its 5,962 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €34.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €16.41 with GOCDKEYS15 (€17.40 with fees).

No rush: Farm Together 2, Garden Life, Sugardew Island and Yonder

Farm Together 2 has no story and no townsfolk. You build the farm you want at your own pace, alone or with friends who drop in online to lend a hand, and most of the fun is in expanding and decorating it. 93% of its 4,514 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €26.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €14.44 with GOCDKEYS15 (€15.34 with fees).

Garden Life: A Cozy Simulator is gardening rather than farming: flowers, plants and decoration, at a very gentle pace. 78% of its 919 Steam reviews are positive. Here the gap is huge: €39.99 (no fees) at the PS Store against €7.22 with GOCDKEYS15 (€7.80 with fees) for Key4Games' account.

Sugardew Island: Your Cozy Farm Shop combines the farm with a shop: you grow your produce and then sell it to customers on a small island. 76% of its 301 Steam reviews are positive. It's the cheapest game on the list and the clearest case for the store: €8.49 (no fees) at the PS Store, against €6.14 with GOCDKEYS15 (€6.67 with fees) for Key4Games' account. For €1.82 more, the game is yours.

Yonder: The Cloud Catcher Chronicles is an open-world adventure with no combat. You explore the island of Gemea, clear away a purple murk with the help of little sprites, craft, and set up farms that you can leave in the hands of helpers. 81% of its 2,918 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €23.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €12.27 with GOCDKEYS15 (€13.08 with fees).

The odd ones out: Roots of Pacha, The Wandering Village and Grave Seasons

Roots of Pacha takes farming back to the Stone Age. Your clan is just starting to settle, and progress comes from ideas: someone has to think of sowing seeds or keeping animals before you can do it. It can be played in co-op, and it's one of the best-rated here, 93% positive out of 3,801. PS Store: €24.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €10.83 with GOCDKEYS15 (€11.57 with fees).

The Wandering Village is a city builder where the city sits on the back of Onbu, a giant creature walking across a world poisoned by toxic spores. You plant crops on its back, build and keep your people alive, and how you treat Onbu matters. 91% of its 7,788 Steam reviews are positive. PS Store: €29.99 (no fees). Key4Games' account: €15.16 with GOCDKEYS15 (€16.10 with fees).

Grave Seasons is a recent farming sim with a horror and mystery tone. We don't have Steam review data for it, and this morning we didn't see it on the PS Store either. The only offers are accounts: Key4Games at €25.28 with GOCDKEYS15 (€26.67 with fees). If you want it on your own account, set a price alert and we'll let you know when something else turns up.

The PS Store column shows this morning's price, which carries no fees; the account column updates on its own with the cheapest offer, fees included. A dash means we had no PS Store price.

If you only buy one, make it Stardew Valley, from the PS Store. For tractors and spreadsheets, Farming Simulator 25. For a story that spans a whole life, A Wonderful Life. To play with friends, Farm Together 2 or Roots of Pacha. And if you want something you haven't seen before, The Wandering Village.

Wanderstop, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma, Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar and Tales of the Shire also have farming in them, but they're already in our list of the best cozy games on PS5.

Prices checked on the morning of 26 October.
