Cooking games pull in two directions. Some want you to get every order out of a busy kitchen before the customer gives up; others use a stove to tell a family story, run a fantasy tavern or send you frying eggs for strangers in the Arctic. This guide has both.
We started from the 204 PC games in our catalogue that carry Steam's Cooking tag and have at least one live offer, and kept 16 where cooking is the point and Steam players are happy with the result. The two biggest names in the genre, Overcooked 2 and PlateUp!, are missing on purpose: you'll find them in our guide to the best split-screen games on PC.
Prices were read on 14 September at around 05:50 UTC and they move, so check the live offers before paying. Each one comes with the coupon, the total once the store adds its payment fee, and the format; at these prices the fee can decide which store is cheaper. On Kiosk, K4G's €0.60 Steam Key becomes €1.05 at checkout, while the one at CDKeys costs €0.89 and stays €0.89.
You'll notice two things repeating. Several games that cost €15 to €30 on Steam have reseller keys for under a couple of euros; keys that cheap usually come out of bundles, although we can't vouch for where each one came from. And on a few games the cheapest offer is a shared account. That means logging into someone else's Steam profile that already owns the game: it never becomes yours and the seller can take the access back. We always point you to a copy that ends up in your own library, even when it costs more.
Kebabs and wraps for a kitchen full of friends
If you came here looking for something to play with friends instead of Overcooked, start with these two.
Kebab Chefs! Restaurant Simulator is built for a group of up to four. Biotech Gameworks developed it and Flagship Interactive publishes it: you run a kebab restaurant, customise it, add recipes as you go and keep the customers served. Steam rates it Very Positive, with 5,817 positive reviews and 1,192 negative.
Resale barely moves the price here. It's €17.49 on Steam, no fees, and Fanatical's Steam Key costs the same, €17.49, no fees. Kinguin's Steam Key is €13.95 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€15.41 with fees), about two euros less. The Steam gifts don't help: G2A's costs €16.39 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€16.68 with fees), and K4G's €15.85 with coupon GCDK14DEAL turns into €17.60 with fees, eleven cents more than Steam.
On Wrap House Simulator the resellers charge more than Steam does. The game is €13.84 on Steam, no fees. Kinguin wants €15.33 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€16.90 with fees) for a Steam Key, and Driffle €22.37 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€23.58 with fees). Everything below Steam's price is a shared account: €3.89 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€4.18 with fees) at G2A and €3.95 with coupon GCDK14DEAL (€4.69 with fees) at K4G. Buy this one on Steam.
What you get is a wrap and shawarma shop, made by Broken Lyre Entertainment and Wendigo Games and published by PlayWay. You slice the meat, grill it, add the sauces and roll it all up in lavash, while impatient customers, food critics and VIP guests wait at the counter. It works solo or in co-op for up to six players. Very Positive on Steam, 2,554 to 382.
Three kitchen simulators you play in first person
Of the 16, Cooking Simulator feels the most like doing a real shift. Big Cheese Studio puts you in a restaurant kitchen where everything runs on physics, and your job is to get the dishes on the menu out properly. Steam also tags it for co-op. It has the most reviews on this list, 14,973 positive and 2,852 negative (Very Positive), although critics gave it a 64 on Metacritic.
Steam asks €16.79, no fees. YUPLAY sells the Steam Key for €5.98, no fees, which beats Gameboost's €7.66 with coupon GCDK13 (€8.01 with fees). Gamivo's Steam gift is €11.69 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€13.09 with fees), and G2A's shared account, €16.86 (€17.15 with fees), costs more than Steam for a login that isn't yours. YUPLAY is where we'd buy Cooking Simulator key today.
The price gap on Chef Life: A Restaurant Simulator is the widest in this guide. Steam charges €29.99, no fees. Kinguin has the Steam Key at €1.62 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€2.10 with fees) and Difmark at €2.02 with coupon Gocdkeys (€2.11 with fees), one cent apart once you pay. The two Steam gifts at G2A, €32.64 (€32.93 with fees) and €37.30 (€37.59 with fees), both cost more than Steam.
Cyanide Studio made it and Nacon publishes it: cooking plus running the restaurant, more colourful and relaxed than Cooking Simulator. Very Positive on Steam (1,844 to 378).
Pick Fast Food Simulator if you'd rather grow a business than perfect a plate. No Ceiling Games gives you a fast food place where you prepare the food, cook it, take the money and expand, on your own or in online co-op with up to six players. Steam: Very Positive, 7,430 positive and 1,210 negative.
No store resells a Steam Key for it right now, so the copy to buy is the one on Steam at €14.79, no fees. The cheaper offers are shared accounts, €3.52 with coupon Gocdkeys (€3.68 with fees) at Difmark and €6.79 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€7.68 with fees) at Kinguin.
Restaurants with a whole world around them
Ale & Tale Tavern hands you a fantasy tavern to restore, in first person, alone or with up to five other players. Serving drinks is only part of it: you also fish, hunt, explore and take on quests. Scienart Games developed it, GrabTheGames publishes, and Steam rates it Very Positive (7,631 to 1,041).
Eneba has the Steam Key at €4.32 with coupon Gocdkeys10 (€5.23 with fees), with Driffle just behind at €4.94 with coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€5.52 with fees). On Steam it's €14.02, no fees. The cheapest Steam gift, €7.06 with coupon Gocdkeys (€7.38 with fees) at Difmark, would also land in your library, but it costs more than the keys.
People tend to describe Chef RPG as Stardew Valley with cooking moved to the centre. World 2 Studio's pixel-art RPG is still in early access. You're a young chef put in charge of Le Sequoia, a restaurant in a coastal town that has seen better days, and you forage, hunt, fish and make friends, some of whom you can romance. Very Positive on Steam, 2,250 to 336.
Nobody resells a Steam Key, so buy it on Steam at €19.50, no fees. The two shared accounts sit at €9.67 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€10.79 with fees) at Kinguin and €10.70 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€10.99 with fees) at G2A. It's a game you'll keep going back to while it's in early access, and we wouldn't trust that to a login someone else controls.
KuloNiku: Bowl Up! comes from Gambir Studio in Indonesia, with Raw Fury publishing. You inherit your grandmother's bakso restaurant (bakso are Indonesian meatballs) in the village of Kuloniku, and your job is to make it famous again. There are also visual-novel scenes, cooking duels and a mystery about your own past. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, with only 91 negative reviews against 2,189 positive.
Here the payment fee swaps the order of the stores. Eneba's Steam Key looks cheaper at €5.66 with coupon Gocdkeys10, but it comes to €6.69 with fees; G2A's is €6.35 with coupon GCKG2AU1M4D and €6.64 with fees. Either one is roughly half of the €11.99 on Steam, no fees. G2A's shared account, at €11.87 (€12.16 with fees), costs more than buying it on Steam.
If you plan to play Galaxy Burger with friends, know this first: online co-op takes two to eight players, every one of them needs their own copy, and there's no split screen. A group of four pays €46.80 between them on Steam. It's a relaxed burger bar in space from Galactic Workshop, where you cook for robo-kittens and aliens, and Steam players love it: Overwhelmingly Positive, 2,353 to 98.
Steam's €11.70, no fees, is the lowest price we have. There are no reseller keys, and both Steam gifts cost more: €12.60 (€12.89 with fees) at G2A and €12.70 with coupon Gocdkeys (€13.27 with fees) at Difmark. With only three offers in total, a price alert for Galaxy Burger will tell you if a cheaper offer turns up.
Venba, Arctic Eggs and Kiosk: cooking that tells a story
If you only play one game from this guide, make it Venba. Visai Games follows a Tamil family who leave India for Canada in the eighties, and tells their story through the dishes they cook. Each recipe is a small puzzle, and one family recipe, half lost, has to be pieced back together. It's short and it will get to you. Steam players agree: Very Positive, 2,218 positive and 167 negative.
It's also among the cheapest games here. Steam charges €14.99, no fees, while Difmark sells the Steam Key for €0.71 with coupon Gocdkeys (€0.74 with fees). Kinguin's is €0.43 with coupon SEPGOC10, but the fee takes it to €0.81. The only offers above Steam's price are G2A's Steam gifts at €16.96 (€17.25 with fees). For less than a euro, there's no point waiting to buy Venba key.
Arctic Eggs is the strangest thing here. The Water Museum made it and CRITICAL REFLEX publishes it. In first person, with a physics-driven frying pan, you fry eggs (and other things) for the people of an Arctic settlement, whose conversations are as odd as the premise. Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam, 5,064 to 267.
Instant Gaming sells the Steam Key for €1.89, no fees, and CDKeys for €1.99, no fees. Steam asks €9.75, no fees. K4G's shared account, €4.24 with coupon GCDK14DEAL (€5.00 with fees), costs more than either key.
Then there's Kiosk, psychological horror in 3D pixel art from Vivi. You spend a week of night shifts behind the counter of a food kiosk, the same customers keep coming back, and the paranoia grows. Very Positive on Steam (2,239 to 305).
Only Automachef has a lower price on Steam than Kiosk's €3.99, no fees. CDKeys has the Steam Key at €0.89, no fees, which beats the €0.60 with coupon GCDK14DEAL at K4G once the fee lifts it to €1.05. Kinguin's shared account (€3.81 with coupon SEPGOC10, €4.46 with fees) costs more than Steam.
Hunt the ingredients first, cook them afterwards
Critics rated Battle Chef Brigade higher than any other game in this guide, with a Metascore of 80, and Steam players call it Overwhelmingly Positive (1,543 to 81). Trinket Studios mixes two games in one: a 2D action game where you hunt monsters for ingredients, and a match-3 style puzzle where you cook what you caught for the judges. All of it is hand-drawn.
After Chef Life, this is the second huge gap. Steam asks €19.99, no fees. Kinguin has the Steam Key at €0.44 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€0.83 with fees), and Difmark at €1.14 with coupon Gocdkeys (€1.19 with fees). The G2A Steam gift, at €24.24 (€24.53 with fees), is €4.54 more than Steam.
Cuisineer takes the same idea into a roguelite. BattleBrew Productions, with Marvelous Europe publishing, sends you into anime-style dungeons armed with a spatula, and the ingredients you bring back go into your restaurant to improve it. Steam players are less keen than they are on Battle Chef Brigade, Mostly Positive from 1,381 positive and 436 negative, though Metacritic gives it 79.
Among the games with a reseller key under Steam's price, only Kebab Chefs! gets a smaller discount. The cheapest Steam Key is at K4G for €6.09 with coupon GCDK14DEAL (€7.01 with fees), against €9.99 on Steam, no fees. Gamivo's Steam gift, €6.37 with coupon GCDKGamivo (€7.58 with fees), ends up 57 cents dearer.
Pizza against the clock and a kitchen that cooks by itself
Papa's Pizzeria Deluxe is part of Flipline Studios' Papa's series, which plenty of people first played in a web browser. It's 2D time management: you take orders, bake, slice and serve pizzas, and you can customise the characters. No game on this page has such one-sided reviews: 3,370 positive and just 69 negative, Overwhelmingly Positive.
No store resells a key, and the only other offers are two G2A Steam gifts at €6.89 (€7.18 with fees). The €5.89 on Steam, no fees, is the cheapest way to get it.
Automachef is for people who'd rather design the kitchen than work in it. Rhombico Games, published by Team17, turns cooking into an automation puzzle: you program machines and conveyor belts so the dishes get made without you, and resources are limited. Mostly Positive on Steam from a small sample (390 to 130), Metascore 71.
At €2.24 on Steam, no fees, it's already cheap. Kinguin gets it down to €0.70 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€1.11 with fees), a little under Gamivo, whose €0.47 with coupon GCDKGamivo ends at €1.24 with fees. G2A's Steam gifts, at €3.58 (€3.87 with fees), cost more than Steam.

On five games, Steam itself is the cheapest copy you'll own: Wrap House Simulator, Fast Food Simulator, Chef RPG, Galaxy Burger and Papa's Pizzeria Deluxe. On three of those a shared account undercuts it, by the widest margin on Fast Food Simulator (€3.68 with fees for the login, €14.79 on Steam with no fees), and we'd still pay Steam.
Where we'd put the money first: Venba, at €0.74 with fees. Then Cooking Simulator from YUPLAY at €5.98, no fees, if you want a proper kitchen sim, or Battle Chef Brigade at €0.83 with fees if you'd rather fight for your dinner. For co-op, Kebab Chefs! with Kinguin's Steam Key, or Galaxy Burger on Steam once everyone in the group has agreed to buy it.
