Lords of the End Times came out on 24 September for Total War: Warhammer III, and Creative Assembly calls it the biggest DLC the series has had. Four new Legendary Lords get the headlines. The bigger change is who gets to play it: according to CA, buying the DLC lets you into the Immortal Empires campaign even if you don't own a single Total War: Warhammer game.
Until now the base game was your way in, and the older games unlocked their own races. So if Nagash is what caught your eye, the obvious question is whether you still need Warhammer III at all.
Nagash, Thanquol, Boris Todbringer and the Glottkin
The paid part brings four Legendary Lords:
- Nagash, the great necromancer, at the head of the undead.
- Thanquol, a skaven Grey Seer from Clan Scruten.
- Boris Todbringer, Elector Count of Middenland, for the Empire.
- The Glottkin, champions of Nurgle, fighting with the Warriors of Chaos.
You can buy the whole thing or pick up individual packs, one per race and lord. CA says the complete DLC costs 15% less than buying all the packs separately, so if you want two or more of them, the bundle is the sensible route. We don't list the DLC in our comparison yet, which is why there are no euro prices for it here.
Free for everyone with the update
You don't have to spend anything to get a decent chunk of this. Neferata arrives as a free Legendary Lord. The Vampire Counts have been reworked, and so has Archaon. On top of that there are new endgame scenarios, and the victory conditions for the older lords have been updated.
Already own Warhammer III and main the Vampire Counts? Worth reinstalling.
Playing with the DLC alone
Call this option A. You buy Lords of the End Times, complete or a single pack, and it gets you into Immortal Empires, the series' big sandbox campaign. No base game required, according to CA.
What the announcement doesn't spell out is which races you can actually pick in Immortal Empires if the DLC is all you own. We're not going to guess. If you're planning to go this way, read the store page carefully before paying.
What you definitely don't get is the content of Warhammer III itself: its own campaign and the races that come with the base game.
Total War: Warhammer III costs €7.54 with fees this morning
Option B is base game plus DLC, and the base game happens to be cheap right now. The best Steam Key in our comparison is at G2A: €7.25 with coupon GCKG2AN7C5E (€7.54 with fees), Steam Key. There are 123 offers on the game's page.
That's 19% below its usual price. Our historical figures are without fees: the median for the key is €8.92 and the lowest we've recorded is €6.88, on 3 January. Over 467 days of tracking it has only been cheaper on 19 of them, so holding out for a few cents more isn't really worth it.
Steam reviews put the game at "Mostly Positive", from 119,858 players.
Which one we'd buy
If you've never touched Warhammer III and all you want is to lead Nagash's armies in Immortal Empires, the DLC on its own could be enough. Just keep in mind that CA hasn't said exactly which races come with that access.
For everyone else, add the base game. At €7.54 with fees it's the cheapest piece of the whole thing, and it removes any doubt: you get its campaign, its races and everything in the DLC. If you'd like to see it drop a bit first, set a price alert and we'll email you when it does.
Every shop we compare is on the page to buy Total War: Warhammer III key.
