Epic Games Store is giving away two indie games next week. From Thursday 8 October at 17:00 CEST (16:00 UK time, 8 AM Pacific) until the same time on Thursday 15 October, TerraScape and Out of Sight cost nothing, and once you claim them they stay in your Epic library for good. Neither copy comes with a Steam key, though. If you would rather have them on Steam, both are on sale there until 8 October: TerraScape for €7.49 (no fees), Steam Key, and Out of Sight for €6.82 (no fees), Steam Key.

How to claim both games on Epic

You need an Epic Games account, which is free. From Thursday afternoon, open each game's page in the Epic Games Store, on the website or in the Epic Games Launcher, and press Get. The checkout shows €0.00. Confirm the order and the game is added to your library. There is no need to download it straight away: once claimed, you can install it whenever you like, even months later.

Each game has its own page, so you have to do it twice. Mind the dates as well. Until the afternoon of the 8th the pages will still show the normal price, and at 17:00 CEST on the 15th the offer is gone.

TerraScape: a city builder played like a puzzle

TerraScape is a medieval city builder from Bitfall Studios, published by Stray Fawn Publishing. You build on floating islands by placing buildings that come to you as a hand of cards, and your score depends on where you put them and which combinations you discover. There are scenarios, monthly challenges and randomly generated maps, played alone or in multiplayer.

The studio got ready for the move to Epic. An update released on 1 October added crossplay between Steam, Epic and GOG, and the leaderboards are now shared by all three stores, so you can play with a friend who owns the Steam version. Steam user reviews are Very Positive, around 89% of some 2,250.

Out of Sight: horror seen through a teddy bear's eyes

Out of Sight comes from The Gang Studio. You play Sophie, a blind girl who sees the world through the eyes of her teddy bear, and you have to get away from her captors and out of a dark mansion while you find out what happened there. It is a single-player adventure that mixes puzzles with horror. On Steam it is rated Very Positive, close to 95% of almost 1,000 reviews.

What you give up by playing on Epic

The Epic copy is a separate licence. It does not show up in your Steam library and does not give you a key to activate there. Steam achievements, Steam Cloud saves and Family Sharing belong to the Steam version, and both games use them. TerraScape also supports Steam Workshop and has a level editor; we have not checked what the Epic version offers for sharing your creations. And on a Steam Deck, Epic games need a third-party launcher.

None of this stops you playing. Both run from the Epic launcher, and with TerraScape's crossplay you are not cut off from friends on Steam.

TerraScape is half price on Steam until 8 October

If you want it in your Steam library, this week is a good time. Steam has it at 50% off, €7.49 (no fees) instead of €14.99 (no fees), Steam Key, until 8 October, the very day the Epic giveaway starts. None of the stores we track beats that this morning.

Our history figures are without fees. A TerraScape key usually goes for €8.99, so today's price is 17% below normal, and in 548 days of data it has only been cheaper on 47. The lowest we have recorded is €5.94, three years ago in April, while the game was still in Early Access. If you would rather hold out for something like that, set a price alert.

The TerraScape Ancient Egypt expansion, which takes the game to Egypt with irrigation systems and monuments, is discounted too: €7.99 (no fees), Steam Key, on Steam until 8 October, the lowest price we have seen for it. It needs the base game, and we have not been able to confirm whether Epic sells it for the free copy.

Out of Sight on Steam: key or account

Steam has Out of Sight at 30% off, €6.82 (no fees) instead of €9.75 (no fees), Steam Key, also until 8 October. That is exactly what a key usually costs in the stores we track, so it is a normal price rather than a bargain.

There is one cheaper option: Difmark sells it for €5.03 with coupon Gocdkeys (€5.26 with fees), Steam Account. An account is not the same thing as a key. A key puts the game in your own Steam library. With an account you get the login for a Steam profile someone else created, and you play on that; if the password is changed, you lose access. For a gap of less than €1.60, we would take the key.

Free on Epic or paid on Steam

If you just want to play them, claim them on Epic from Thursday and you are done. If having them on Steam matters to you, decide before 8 October, when both discounts end. After that, unless another sale comes along, TerraScape goes back to €14.99 (no fees) and Out of Sight to €9.75 (no fees) on Steam. You can compare every store on the pages to buy TerraScape key and buy Out of Sight key.

Prices checked on the morning of 6 October.
