Tempest Rising is getting an expansion. It is called Veti's Wrath, it arrives this month, and the heart of it is a brand new campaign of 11 missions. There is no day circled on the calendar yet and nobody has said what it will cost, so we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Those 11 missions belong to the Veti, the third faction in the game: the one that turned up after the two it shipped with, the Dynasty and the Global Defense Forces. A campaign that long is a reason to reinstall for anyone who finished the original two.
It is also the moment a lot of people finally buy the base game, so here is the number that matters for that. Steam asks €39.99, no fees, and the cheapest Steam Key is €24.81 with the coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€25.10 with fees), at G2A.
An 11-mission campaign for the Veti
Two things are confirmed and both are worth repeating: the campaign runs to 11 missions, and it lands in September. Anything past that we do not have. No exact date, no price, no promise about which edition might include it later on.
The Veti arriving as the lead faction of an expansion makes sense. They were the late addition to a game that launched with the Dynasty and the Global Defense Forces facing off, so a campaign of their own is the first time they get to carry a story instead of being the third option in a skirmish.
Tempest Rising is a base-building RTS of the old school
If you skipped it, the short version: you harvest resources, you build a base, you push out with an army. It sits squarely in the Command & Conquer tradition, which is not a coincidence for a game developed by Slipgate Ironworks and published by 3D Realms. It came out on 24 April last year.
The reception held up. On Steam it sits at Very Positive with 8,535 positive reviews against 1,275 negative, out of 9,810 in total, and Metacritic gives it 80. One thing to note before you go looking: PC is the only platform. There is no console version to compare against.
What the PC version costs right now
We checked the shops on the morning of 16 September (07:42 UTC) and prices move every day. There are 32 live offers for the PC version. Steam is at €39.99, no fees, and Green Man Gaming matches it at €39.99, no fees.
Resellers go lower, and the gap is wide. The cheapest is the G2A Steam Key, standard edition, at €24.81 with the coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€25.10 with fees). After that:
- Difmark Digital Keys, Steam Key: €31.21 with the coupon Gocdkeys (€32.61 with fees).
- GamesPlanet, Steam Key: €34.77, no fees.
- Eneba, Steam Key: €34.14 with the coupon Gocdkeys10 (€37.63 with fees).
- Driffle, Steam Key: €35.38 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€37.06 with fees).
Read that from the second figure, not the first. Eneba starts below GamesPlanet and finishes almost three euros above it once the payment fee is added, and Driffle does the same thing on a smaller scale. GamesPlanet charges nothing on top, so what you see is what leaves your account.
The Deluxe Edition is a smaller field: G2A has it at €42.71 with the coupon GCKG2AU1M4D (€43.00 with fees) and GamesPlanet at €43.47, no fees. We have not verified what it adds over the standard edition, so check the shop page before you pay the difference.
The €1.67 offer is not a copy of the game
Sort the offers by price and something strange sits at the top: €1.67 at Difmark with the coupon Gocdkeys (€1.75 with fees). That is a shared Steam account, not a key. You log into an account that belongs to someone else, the game never lands in your library, and whoever owns it can change the password whenever they feel like it. G2A has one too, at €16.39 (€16.68 with fees), with the same catch.
For a game you are buying because of a new campaign, that is the wrong trade. The G2A key at €25.10 with fees is yours, it activates on your account and it still costs €14.89 less than Steam wants. Buy now, or hold out for a discount?
Here we have to be straight with you. Our price history for this game mixes formats, keys and shared accounts in the same series, so a median built on it would describe something that is not a key. We are not going to hand you a figure that misleads.
What we can say is solid enough. Steam has been asking €39.99 since release and has not moved off it, and reseller keys are sitting above €24. The expansion is not usually the moment a base game gets cheap, so if you want the campaign at launch, the G2A key is the cheapest honest way in today.
If you are in no hurry, the other option is to set a price alert and let the shops come to you. Veti's Wrath is not going anywhere once it is out.
