Bugbear released Content Update 9 for Wreckfest 2 on 15 October. The game is still in early access and only playable on PC, through Steam. The PS5 and Xbox Series versions will arrive with 1.0, which doesn't have a date yet.
There's a fair amount in this one: two new modes, two new venues, three cars and changes to almost everything about how the cars drive and fall apart. Here's what it adds, and what it means if you're torn between buying now, waiting for a sale or holding out for the console release.
Chase mode and a derby with no respawns
The headline addition is Chase, a team mode that splits the lobby into Runners and Chasers. The Runners have to reach the finish line without being caught. Playing solo? Bots fill the empty slots, so you don't need a full lobby to give it a go.
The other new mode is a Demolition Derby without respawns. Once you're wrecked, you're out.
The Drome, Hogtown and three cars
The Drome comes with two layouts: Deathloop 2, which has a double loop, and Double Cross. Hogtown is a smaller affair, with a little derby arena and a mud oval.
- Flipper (new): a European sporty compact from the nineties.
- Blade (back): an American muscle car from the eighties.
- Hammerhead (back): a European estate from the eighties.
Shared paint jobs, physics and modding tools
Custom paint jobs can now be shared online. Bugbear has also reworked handling and tyre physics, damage, the AI, sound and multiplayer.
Modding tools are coming "very soon", the studio says, and it has shown a trailer of the track editor. There's no release date for them.
Not out on console yet: don't buy those accounts
Wreckfest 2 hasn't been released on PS5 or Xbox. Even so, our PS5 and Xbox pages are showing accounts for sale: Key4Games has an Xbox account at €24.97 with GOCDKEYS15 (€26.35 with fees) and a PS5 one at €28.89 with the same coupon (€30.45 with fees). Don't buy them. There's no console version to play, and an account is just the login for someone else's profile, so the game would never really be yours. If you want it on PS5 or Xbox, wait for 1.0.
What it costs on PC today
On Steam it's €34.99 (no fees), and that's the cheapest way to get it as a Steam Key. Reseller keys end up costing more once fees are added.
| What you buy | Store | Today |
|---|---|---|
| Steam (official store) | Steam | €34.99 (no fees) |
| Steam Gift | K4G | €29.77 with GCDK14DEAL (€32.70 with fees) |
| Steam Gift | Gamivo | €31.50 (€33.59 with fees) |
| Steam Key | Eneba | €32.29 with Gocdkeys10 (€35.62 with fees) |
| Steam Key | Key4Games | €44.74 (€46.71 with fees) |
Eneba looks cheaper than Steam until checkout, where fees take it to €35.62. The saving is in the Steam Gift: a copy someone sends you through Steam, which stays in your own library. It isn't an account. K4G's gift comes to €32.70 with fees, about €2.30 less than Steam.
You'll also see a Steam account at Difmark for €8.40 with the Gocdkeys coupon (€8.78 with fees). That gets you the login for someone else's account that already has the game, and it never lands in your library. We wouldn't go for it.
We've been tracking the key for 128 days (historical figures don't include fees). Its median is €34.99, it was cheaper than it is now on 45 of those days, and the lowest we've seen was €26.24 on 8 August.
Buy now, wait for a sale or wait for 1.0?
If you play on PC and want to try Chase this week, the K4G gift at €32.70 with fees is the cheapest way to have it in your library today. Bear in mind you're buying an early access game that will keep changing. Steam players rate it as Mostly Positive, with 73% of 5,764 reviews in favour, which is decent rather than glowing.
If you're in no rush, we'd wait. It has already been down to €26.24, and €2.30 off isn't much of a deal by comparison. You can buy Wreckfest 2 key whenever you're ready, or set a price alert and we'll tell you when it drops again.
On console there's nothing to buy yet. Wait until Bugbear puts a date on 1.0.
Prices checked on the morning of 26 October.
