Housemarque released Zenith for Saros on 19 October, a free update for PS5 that arrives as patch 2.000.000. It adds a New Game+ called Eclipse Layers, a timed boss rush with worldwide leaderboards, a new set of Carcosan Modifiers and several accessibility options that make the game easier to get into. If you finished Saros months ago, there is now a reason to go back. If you were put off by the difficulty, the case for buying it has got stronger, although the official price hasn't moved.
Eclipse Layers and Overlord Rush, the two new modes
Eclipse Layers unlocks once you've beaten the game. It's a New Game+ with altered rules and a higher difficulty, so the runs you already know play out differently from the start.
Overlord Rush is a boss rush: you face the Overlords back to back against the clock, and your time goes on a worldwide leaderboard. For a Housemarque game, where much of the appeal is shaving seconds off a run, this is probably the addition with the longest life.
Modifiers in both directions and new accessibility options
The new Carcosan Modifiers work both ways. Some make runs easier, others make them harder, so you can tune the challenge to suit you instead of accepting the default.
The accessibility options matter most to anyone who hasn't bought it yet. There is a Slow Game Speed setting that slows the whole game down, automatic weapon fire and aiming with the DualSense gyroscope. Housemarque has also added new trophies.
Who Zenith is really for
If you own Saros, Zenith is a free download and gives you a reason to dust off your save: the New Game+ and the leaderboards are content for people who already know Carcosa well.
If you've been holding back because Returnal was too much for you, the slower speed and auto-fire change the picture more than the new modes do. Saros is still the same third-person action roguelike, exclusive to PS5, but you no longer need fast reflexes to see it through.
What Saros costs on PS5 this morning
The official purchase is still at its usual price: €59.99 (no fees) on the PlayStation Store. In the 34 days we've been tracking key prices, we haven't seen it any cheaper (our price history excludes fees).
The resellers' PSN Keys are no better. Eneba asks €80.10 with Gocdkeys10 (€87.56 with fees) and K4G €117.23 with GCDK14DEAL (€127.59 with fees), well above what Sony charges.
The cheap offers are accounts. GamesPSN has one for €15.52 with GOCDKEYS16 (no fees), Key4Games for €26.95 with GOCDKEYS15 (€28.42 with fees) and Difmark for €31.32 with Gocdkeys (€32.73 with fees). Every option is on the page to buy Saros PS5 key.
Account or official purchase: what you're actually paying for
An account is not a key. You're given the login details for someone else's PSN account that already owns Saros, and you play through it. It's far cheaper, but the game isn't in your name, and if the account stops working you lose access.
For this game that matters more than usual. Zenith shows Housemarque is still updating Saros, and Overlord Rush is built around online leaderboards. With the PlayStation Store purchase, the game, its updates and your times sit on your own account without depending on anyone else. That's what we'd go for, even at nearly four times the price of the cheapest account. If saving money comes first, the account is there and you know what it involves.
If you'd rather wait for Sony to discount it, set a price alert for Saros and we'll email you when the price drops.
