Liquid Swords released Update #8 for the PC version of Samson on 21 September, and it's a big one. The action game, which splits its fighting between brawls on foot and scraps behind the wheel, has been out since 8 April and sits at "Mixed" on Steam, with 54% of 2,913 reviews positive. A lukewarm start, then, and this patch goes after exactly the sort of thing that shapes a first impression: how the game teaches you, and how its car combat reads on screen.
A playable prologue that teaches you to fight
New games now open with a playable prologue that doubles as a combat tutorial and shows a slice of Samson's past. On top of that, there are new tutorials for mechanics that were easy to miss, such as the Adrenaline Rush while driving and shoving enemies into hazards around the environment.
Car combat you can actually read
Most of the changes on the road are about making it clearer what's happening:
- Enemy vehicles now have their weak points highlighted in blue.
- Wheels turn red when they're about to give out.
- Enemy drivers go for side rams more often.
- Traffic drivers are better at getting out of your way.
- Mission vehicles get a marker on the map.
XP now comes from wrecking cars, not bumping into them
Ordinary traffic no longer gives you any XP. Vehicle takedowns, on the other hand, now pay out quite a lot more, so progression rewards the fights rather than careless driving.
A way out of a bad spot
The pause menu has a new emergency option, Respawn at the Clinic, for when you're stuck. Workshops also offer a cheaper partial repair, so you don't have to pay for a full fix every time.
Three Takedown Jobs, five jackets and a pile of fixes
There are three new Takedown Jobs, against the Grim Skulls, the Debt Collectors and a street gang. You can also unlock five new jackets: four cost Skill Points and the fifth is yours for finishing the last chapter. The rest of the notes are mission fixes: NPCs getting stuck, objectives that wouldn't complete, vehicles that failed to spawn and blocked paths.
Half price on Steam, and a cheaper gift
Steam is selling it for €12.49 (no fees), Steam Key. By our records its normal Steam price is €24.99, which is still what Green Man Gaming wants today (€24.99, no fees), so this is half price. Earlier Steam sales had it at €19.99 and €16.74.
The cheapest copy of your own is a Steam Gift at Gamivo: €9.02 with the coupon GCDKGamivo (€10.32 with fees). A Steam Gift is sent to you through Steam and is added to your own account, just like a key. After that comes Steam itself at €12.49.
The only lower prices are Steam Accounts, which give you the login to somebody else's account rather than a copy in your library: K4G at €5.46 with the coupon GCDK14DEAL (€6.32 with fees) and Driffle at €5.91 with the coupon GOCDKEYS10 (€6.52 with fees). We'd pay the few extra euros for your own copy, but the choice is yours. Other keys cost more: GamesPlanet €19.56 (no fees) and Fanatical €22.99 (no fees).
Worth a second look?
If the reviews put you off, a patch this size with the game at half price is a reasonable time to give it a go. The Gamivo gift at €10.32 with fees is the cheapest copy you get to keep, and you'll find every shop we track on our buy Samson key page. Steam's €12.49 is the simpler option if you'd rather pay Valve directly. If you'd rather see a few more patches first, set a price alert.
