RimWorld is changing engine. Ludeon Studios has announced on its blog that Update 1.7 leaves Unity behind and runs on Waylith, an engine the studio built itself. You can already play it on a Steam beta branch, but there is no date yet for the stable release.

RimWorld is Ludeon's colony sim; the studio develops and publishes it. On Steam, 203,857 of its 210,162 reviews are positive (97%), and it has 87 on Metacritic.

What Waylith changes, according to Ludeon

Mostly speed. In Ludeon's tests the game runs two to four times faster, and in stress tests on late-game colonies they measured about 2.2x. Loading is quicker too: with 1,500 mods active, it went from 14 minutes to 6.

Bear in mind these are the studio's own numbers. Nobody has tested them independently yet, and what you gain will depend on your PC, your colony and your mod list.

The art style and the game balance stay exactly as they are. Ludeon also has a second, unannounced game running on Waylith, with no genre or release date given.

Your saves and mods carry over

Saves from 1.6 load in 1.7 without any converter. It works backwards as well: a colony saved in 1.7 still opens if you switch back to 1.6. Trying the beta shouldn't cost you a run, though a copy of your save folder before you start never hurts.

Mods don't need to be rewritten. Some will show a yellow warning, which comes from the version number change.

Where Ludeon does expect trouble is old hardware. Computers more than ten years old may struggle to launch the game, and the studio is collecting diagnostics on its Discord to sort that out.

How to try 1.7 on the unstable branch

  • In your Steam library, right-click RimWorld and choose Properties.
  • Open Betas and pick the "unstable" branch.
  • If it isn't listed, restart Steam and check again.

The default branch stays on 1.6 until Ludeon finishes validating 1.7. If you run into bugs, the studio asks you to report them through its official channels.

How much RimWorld costs this morning

On Steam it's €31.99 (no fees). The cheapest key this morning is at G2A: €18.39 with code GCKG2AC9Q3M (€18.68 with fees), Steam Key. Once fees are counted, that's 42% less than Steam. You activate it on your own Steam account and the game sits in your library like anything you bought there.

We have 831 days of price data for the key. The median is €25.79 and it has only been cheaper on 34 of those days; the lowest we recorded was €5.99, while RimWorld was still in early access (both figures without fees). So today's price is a good one. If you'd rather hold out for a deeper discount, set a price alert for RimWorld and we'll email you when it drops.

Why we don't recommend the €3.35 offer

Difmark lists it for €3.35 with code Gocdkeys (€3.50 with fees), but that is a Steam Account: a separate Steam account that already owns the game. It doesn't get added to yours, so you'd have to log into that account to play. RimWorld is a game people mod heavily and play for hundreds of hours, and we'd want it in our own library. Our pick is the key.

Every store and format, with fees included, is on the page to buy RimWorld key.
