GG.deals flagged it two days ago: PixARK is free to play on Steam until Monday. Not a giveaway and not a copy you keep — you get in, you explore, you tame a few dinosaurs, you throw up a base, and on Monday the door closes. Which leaves one question worth answering: if the weekend goes well, what does it cost to carry on?

We compare thirteen live offers for the PC version across eight stores, and today the answer is an awkward one for a price comparison site. The cheapest copy that ends up in your own library is the one Valve sells: 4.87 at Steam, format Standard. Not one reseller on our page undercuts that with a code.

What the free weekend does and does not give you

Snail Games USA is both the studio and the publisher here, and what it has put on the table is a weekend. Play as much as you like until Monday, pay nothing, keep nothing. That is the whole of the news and there is no point reading more into it.

Steam’s overall verdict is Mostly Positive, built on 8,112 positive reviews out of 10,962. The sample is big enough to take seriously, and Mostly Positive means roughly what it looks like: a lot of people get on with this game and a decent minority did not. A free weekend is the cheapest way to work out which of the two you are.

Two offers beat Steam, and both of them are gifts

Sort our PixARK page by price and two entries come in under the official store, both of them Steam Gift: Gamivo at 3.46 (with coupon GCDKGamivo) and Gameseal at 4.79 euros. With a gift you redeem nothing: a seller hands you the game as a present out of their own Steam account and you accept it. Plenty of people buy that way without trouble, but the purchase rests on somebody else’s account and you finish with nothing in your name.

Gamivo saves you eighty cents. Gameseal saves you eight. Eight cents is the price of nothing at all, and nobody should be handing a purchase over to a stranger’s Steam account for that.

The other six gifts on the page all ask more than Valve does: Kinguin twice at 5.52 euros, Gamivo at 6.23 euros, G2A at 7.31 euros and G2A twice more at 8.60 euros. Eight Steam Gift offers in total: six of them above the official store, two below it.

The first reseller code is 17.99 euros

Skip the gifts and the first offer that puts a real Steam Key in your hands is Kinguin at 17.99 euros, format Standard. That is 13.12 euros over what Valve is charging. Behind it come Gameboost at 18.51 euros Standard, Eneba at 21.71 euros Standard and GamesPlanet at 31.03 euros Standard. Four codes, and the cheapest of the four costs almost four times the official price.

Before you pay: a Steam Gift comes out of another player’s account, so no code is ever issued in your name and there is nobody to escalate to if the gift gets reversed. At today’s prices the official store is already cheaper than six of the eight gifts on the page.

Five months of prices, and who actually cut them

Our record on this game runs to 2,864 measurements. Over the last five months the cheapest offer on the page, whatever its format, went 18.75, 18.75, 8.38, 8.38 and 4.07 euros this month. The monthly average across the whole page hardly moved in the same stretch: 23.04, 23.63, 21.60, 19.52 and 21.18 euros.

A floor that falls by nearly fifteen euros while the average stands still is not a market coming down. It is one store cutting while the rest watch. That store is Steam: its own price has gone 19.50 euros, then 8.38, then 4.87, Standard throughout, and 4.87 euros is the lowest figure we have ever logged for the official store on this game.

For completeness, the lowest number anywhere in our series is 0.83 euros, format aside, and it belongs to a far older phase of this page. Do not plan around it.

When our page will be worth checking again

The day the official discount ends. Look again at the first two of those five months: with Steam back at its normal price, the cheapest thing on the entire page was 18.75 euros, and the resellers were the ones putting it there. That is the situation where comparing stores saves real money, and it returns the moment the sale closes.

Until then, the advice that pays us least is the right one. If the weekend wins you over, hand Valve the 4.87 and be done with it. Keep the page for later, though: every store, price and format is on buy PixARK key, and the full series sits on the PixARK price page.
