Novus Inceptio had been quiet for so long that plenty of owners had written it off. On 5 October McMagic Productions released Update 0.60.008, the first big patch in years for this single-player fantasy survival and crafting sandbox. McMagic is one developer working on the game part-time, which explains the long gaps. This time a good chunk of the game has been rebuilt: engine, main world, combat and economy.

If you never bought it, the cheapest Steam Key this morning is at G2A for €3.06 with coupon GCKG2AT6V1P (€3.35 with fees), while Steam asks €14.25 (no fees).

A 64 km² world with no fixed towns

The game has left its old Unity 5 engine for a much newer version of Unity, and data loads faster. The bigger change is the map. The new main world covers 64 km² of wilderness, and the only fixed structures are the starting point and the Creators' Towers, which double as free teleports. You can build anywhere else. There are forests, grassland, desert, jungle, snow, moss swamps and underwater areas, and the best ores are either far out or inside anomalies, so wandering off pays.

The previous version's map stays in the game as "Old World". It won't get any bigger.

What happens to your old saves

Characters are now separate from worlds, so one character can visit several. A "Migrate old saves" button in the main menu converts up to three old saves. The originals aren't deleted and you can still play them on the novus2019 beta branch. Money and strong weapons carry over, though the developer suggests starting a fresh character, which makes sense once you see how much the economy has moved. Saves go to Steam Cloud, with an autosave every 2 to 4 minutes.

Third person, dodging and wall climbing

Character models are new and the camera is third person only. First-person view has been removed. In return you get a dodge on Q with a brief moment of invulnerability, wall climbing on E (it needs the skill and enough stamina) and crouched stealth.

Damage now depends on your skill with the weapon in your hands, not on your gear. Bows and arrows are in, with their own archery skills. Creatures range from level 1 to 10 and scale with your combat skill, the middle mouse button locks onto a target, and equipment wears down until it breaks. Active blocking with a shield has been pushed back to a later update.

Weather, seasonal events and a crafting-first economy

Each biome has its own weather, sandstorms and snowstorms included, and there is a forecast for 2 and 4 hours ahead.

The economy was recalculated too. Resources come in qualities up to T9 depending on your skill. Quests reward you with resources rather than money or finished gear, chests no longer hold ready-made weapons or tools, and money comes from selling what you craft or find.

Seasonal events switch on by themselves based on your PC's date: Halloween from 18 October to 1 November, Christmas from 16 December to 2 January. The game supports 18 languages, with the interface translated but still waiting for review, and F2 opens an in-game help wiki.

Who should give it a miss for now

Anyone hoping to play with friends. Novus Inceptio is single-player only, co-op "will come some day" with no date attached, and the MMORPG plans have been dropped. If first person was how you played, that's gone as well. It sits on the list of things still missing alongside appearance options (hair, skin), new animals, shield blocking and the horse.

The patch also arrived with rough edges. Two hotfixes are already out (0.60.008a06 and a07) and another is planned before Halloween. The announcement says nothing about a price change or about leaving Early Access.

Is it worth €3.35 right now?

Six offers are live today, and the cheapest is that G2A Steam Key: €3.06 with coupon GCKG2AT6V1P (€3.35 with fees). You redeem it on your own Steam account and the game stays in your library. On Steam it's €14.25 (no fees) at the moment, after sitting at €19.50 (no fees) since July.

Our price history figures are store prices without fees or coupons. The median for a key is €4.99, and the lowest we have on record is €2.00, from years ago. Counting every format, the monthly low has slid from €2.94 in April to €1.03 in October.

Steam reviews are Mixed, with 50% of 1,088 positive (544). Most of them were written about the old version, so they tell you little about how 0.60 plays.

For about three euros, if slow, solitary survival built around crafting is your thing and you can live with a few bugs, we'd try it now. If you'd rather wait until the hotfix promised before Halloween lands, set a price alert in the meantime. Every store, fees included, is on the page to buy Novus Inceptio key.

Prices checked on the morning of 8 October.
