Every annual sports game gets accused of being last year's with a new cover, and most years the accusation half sticks. This one is easier to argue about than usual, because 2K has published a list of what changed instead of leaving it to marketing adjectives. What follows is that list as the developer describes it, with nothing added. If all you want to know is the cost, the NBA 2K27 price page covers PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch 2.
The on-court changes, one by one

Take the list as a whole and the direction is obvious: fewer outcomes settled by a dice roll behind the scenes. Dunks, ankle breakers and contests all shift toward your inputs and your positioning. Whether that sounds like an improvement depends on how often the old system used to bail you out.
Badges, Takeover and the builder
The badge pool goes from 40 to 53: six of last year's have been cut and nineteen are new, and nothing else on this list rearranges a build as thoroughly. Takeover is now split across five disciplines — shooting, finishing, playmaking, defence and rebounding — each with its own meter running through six tiers, and there are 24 Takeover abilities in total, nineteen of which unlock as your attributes climb. One of those, Hydration Hero, fits any of the five slots and holds off adrenaline and stamina drain while it is running.
The MyPLAYER builder picks up female MyPLAYERs, Badge Tokens and a Synergy system. If you spent last season wrestling with the builder, this is the corner of the game that has moved furthest.
Is it worth the upgrade?
For anyone deep in MyCAREER or MyTEAM, the badge overhaul plus the Takeover restructure rebuild your character from the studs up, and none of that work carries over. For casual games on the sofa, the honest answer is that the shooting and dunking timing will feel strange for a week, then feel normal, and the rest is polish you will never consciously register.
Then there is the practical argument, which has nothing to do with basketball: last year's edition gets cheap in a hurry once the new one lands, and the new one does not. That is a question for the price page, not for this one.
Editions, and the trap in the first row
Three editions are on sale — Standard, Deluxe and Ultra — and what separates them is Virtual Currency, MyTEAM packs and cosmetics. Not one of them unlocks a mode. Before you pay the difference, price up the bundled VC as if you were buying it directly and see whether the maths still works.
The other thing to check is the format label. On a launch page the cheapest row is very often a shared account rather than a code: less money, but the purchase never becomes yours and your MyPLAYER lives on somebody else's profile.
