The question people keep typing is whether the Switch 2 version comes on a cartridge. It does not. Modern Warfare 4 arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on 23 October, and the boxed copy sold in shops is a download code printed on a card inside the case — there is no cartridge edition at any price. One retailer, Video Games Plus, has already said it will not stock the boxed version on the grounds that "physical games should actually be physical games". If you are shopping on price rather than shelf presence, the Modern Warfare 4 price page tracks every platform side by side.

What the Switch 2 version is, and what it is not

It is Modern Warfare 4 as a Switch 2 exclusive within the Nintendo family: the page is explicit that it runs on Nintendo Switch 2 and not on the original Switch. Nintendo lists it for handheld, tabletop and TV play, with HDR support on a television, one player on a single system and one to twelve online. An Activision account is required, and online multiplayer needs a Nintendo Switch Online subscription on top, sold separately. Cloud saves also travel through that subscription.

Two editions are on the eShop before launch, Standard and Vault. The Vault is the one carrying the operator packs, signature weapons, BlackCell battle pass content and the DMZ extras; the Standard is the game. Pre-ordering brings the campaign forward to 16 October, a week ahead of the full release.

Is a boxed copy worth anything here?

Mechanically, no. Whether you buy the box or the eShop listing, the outcome is the same file downloaded onto the same console against the same account. What the box adds is a card you have to keep until you redeem it, and what it removes is the ability to lend or resell the game once that code is gone. It is worth knowing before you pay a shelf price for something that behaves like a digital purchase.

That also changes how you compare offers. A code is a code wherever it comes from, so the shops we track are competing on exactly the same product as the eShop — which is not true of every game, and is the whole reason the comparison is worth opening.

Read the format label before the number

Console listings for a big launch attract a particular kind of offer, and Modern Warfare 4 is no exception.

Label on the rowWhat you receiveDoes it become yours?
eShop CodeA 16-character code you redeem on your own Nintendo AccountYes, permanently
AccountLogin details for somebody else's account that owns the gameNo, and the seller keeps the credentials
Standard / VaultThe edition, not the delivery method — read it together with the row aboveDepends on the delivery

Region matters here more than on PC: a Nintendo eShop code only redeems on an account registered in the matching region, and once redeemed there is no way back. Every row in the comparison prints its region next to the format.

Waiting or pre-ordering

Pre-order bonuses on this game are attached to the edition, not to the shop, so a cheaper seller hands you the same extras as an expensive one. That is the argument for comparing before launch rather than after. The argument for waiting is the ordinary one: console codes for annual shooters hold their price for a few weeks and then start moving, and nothing you buy today is scarce.

Whichever way you go, check the platform on the page you are on — a code issued for one machine never works on another. You can buy Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 key offers for Switch 2 compared across the verified shops we follow, with the format and the region on every line.
