Mindcop is one of the two free games on the Epic Games Store this week, alongside Shogun Showdown. You can claim it until 24 September, and once it is in your Epic library it stays there for good, whether or not you ever get round to launching it.
That part is simple. It gets less simple if everything you play already lives on Steam, because on Steam Mindcop has just gone back to its full €14.99. The shops we compare are asking far less than that this morning, and less than we have ever recorded for this game.
A murder, five days and a puzzle inside people's heads
Mindcop is a non-linear detective adventure made by Andre Gareis, a German developer working on his own, and published by Dear Villagers. It came out in November, almost two years ago.
Someone has been killed at the Merrylin Crater campsite and you have five days to work out who did it. Every action eats into that time: questioning a suspect, searching an area, picking one dialogue option over another. You will not get round to everything, so you have to decide which leads are worth the hours.
The unusual bit is the Mindsurf. To find out what a suspect is keeping back, you go inside their head, and that plays out as a real-time match-3 puzzle that opens up their "Sea of Thoughts", where the clues are hidden. There are two endings, and the one you get depends on what you took the trouble to investigate.
Players rate it highly. Steam shows Very Positive, 94% of 413 reviews, and the store page also carries a Metascore of 85.
Epic or Steam: what each library gives you
If you already use the Epic launcher, there is not much to weigh up. Claim it before the 24th and move on.
If your games sit on Steam, wanting this one there too is reasonable: your achievements, your friends list, your reviews, and the Steam Deck if that is where you play. Then again, one detective game in a second launcher is hardly a disaster, and plenty of people run both. It comes down to convenience, and this week convenience is cheap.
The cheapest Steam copy costs €1.46 with fees
There are fifteen live offers on the page, and thirteen of them are Steam Keys, a code you redeem on your own Steam account. These are the cheapest, with the price each shop advertises and what you actually pay once its payment fee goes on:
- Kinguin: €1.03 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€1.46 with fees), Steam Key.
- HRKGame: €1.08 with coupon Gocdkeys12 (€1.48 with fees), Steam Key.
- YUPLAY: €1.63 (no fees), Steam Key.
- Kinguin: €1.25 with coupon SEPGOC10 (€1.70 with fees), Steam Key.
- Difmark Digital Keys: €1.65 with coupon Gocdkeys (€1.72 with fees), Steam Key.
- K4G: €1.31 with coupon GCDK14DEAL (€1.82 with fees), Steam Key.
- Eneba: €1.23 with coupon Gocdkeys10 (€1.88 with fees), Steam Key.
Keep an eye on Eneba. On the advertised price it is the third cheapest; at checkout it drops to the bottom of this list. YUPLAY goes the other way: €1.63 with no coupon to type in and no fee on top. For anyone who does not want to fiddle with codes it is the easy pick, and it still undercuts five of the seven.
Without coupons you also have Cdkeys Com at €2.09 (no fees), GamesPlanet at €2.20 (no fees), Greenmangaming at €2.46 (no fees) and Fanatical at €2.54 (no fees), all Steam Keys. That makes eleven offers under €2.60 once fees are counted. Humble Bundle and Steam itself are both asking €14.99 (no fees).
Two G2A offers to walk past
G2A lists Mindcop at €10.25 (€10.54 with fees), Steam Account. That is not your own copy of the game. What you get is the login to a shared account somebody else set up: the game never reaches your library, the account is not yours to control, and you pay roughly seven times what a key costs. We always point people towards a copy of their own, and here there is not even a price argument for the alternative.
The second is €18.97 (€19.26 with fees), Steam Gift, also at G2A. A gift is sent from another Steam account and you accept it, so the game does end up yours. It just costs more than buying it directly from Steam at €14.99.
Never this cheap in our records
Our price history for the key runs to 362 days. Over that stretch the median was €3.89 and the previous low was €2.09, on 8 September. Both are raw shop prices, without fees or coupons, so the fair comparison is with the €1.14 Kinguin asks today before its coupon. Nothing in our history comes close.
Steam has had its own sales. It sat at €3.74 from June until late July, then €2.99 from 28 August to 10 September, and now it is back at €14.99. If you missed those, the resellers are currently below both.
Play on Epic? Claim it for nothing before 24 September. Want it next to the rest of your Steam games? Pick a shop you trust from the list above and buy Mindcop key for less than a euro and a half. And if you would still rather wait, set a price alert, although there is very little room left for it to fall.
