Mad King Redemption joined Xbox Game Pass on 23 September. It's included in Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and PC Game Pass, though not in Essential, and you can play it on Xbox Series X|S, on PC and through the cloud. If you already subscribe to one of those plans, you can start it today without paying anything extra.
If you'd rather own it, the PC version is where the money question gets interesting.
A 2.5D brawler with roguelite progression
It's a 2.5D beat 'em up in pixel art, developed by the German studio SECRET MISSION and published by Pixel Doors. You choose between four heroes and fight your way through runs, with roguelite progression tying them together.
Steam reviews are "Very Positive", with 84% of 160 in favour (134 positive). That's still a small sample, so read the score as an early impression rather than a verdict.
Two players, one screen
You can play alone or with a friend on the same sofa. Co-op is local only and tops out at two players. There's no online co-op and no cross-play, which matters if you were hoping to team up with someone who plays on another platform or from their own home.
From Steam early access to Xbox
The game launched in early access on Steam on 14 May. Xbox consoles and Xbox on PC followed on 22 August, and a month later it was added to the subscription. PS5 and Switch 2 versions have been announced but still have no release date.
On the US Xbox store it sells for $14.99. We don't have a euro price from the Microsoft Store, so we can't tell you what the console version costs here.
Where it's cheapest to own on PC
We only track the PC version. The best key right now is at GOG: €10.22 (no fees), GOG Key. It's a DRM-free copy for your GOG library and it won't activate on Steam. Steam itself charges €15.26 (no fees), so the GOG copy saves you €5.04.
Further down you'll see Difmark at €7.97 with coupon Gocdkeys (€8.33 with fees), Steam Account. That gets you the login to someone else's account with the game on it, not a copy of your own. We'd spend the extra couple of euros and take the key.
Is €10.22 a good price?
It's a normal one. Our historical figures are without fees. The median for the key is €10.22, exactly what it costs today. The lowest we've recorded is €4.69, on 7 May, a week before early access opened. Over 178 days of tracking, it has been cheaper than today on 82 of them.
No bargain, then, but no reason to think you're overpaying either.
Game Pass or your own copy: who each one suits
Already paying for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or PC Game Pass? Try it there first. It costs you nothing extra, and a couple of evenings will tell you whether this kind of brawler clicks with you. Just remember you can only play it while you keep the subscription and while the game stays in the catalogue.
Not subscribed, and this is the only game you're after? A one-off €10.22 for the GOG copy makes more sense than signing up to a monthly plan for a single game, and you keep it. If it has to be in your Steam library, the store price at Steam is €15.26.
